Im-jin (壬辰) Day Pillar: Goegang Water Dragon in Korean Saju
Im-jin (壬辰, 임진) is number 29 in the sixty-pillar cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja), with Im, Yang Water, on top of Jin, the Dragon. Jin is the damp spring earth that collects water: a reservoir behind a dam, or a deep lake where folklore says a dragon sleeps. Put the great river over it and you get water held in place, calm on the surface with pressure behind the wall. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), Im-jin is one of the more forceful combinations in the cycle.
The image
Earth controls Water, so on the surface the branch restrains the stem. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of Jin tell a layered story. Eul, Yin Wood, holds 9 days as Hurting Officer for Im. Gye, Yin Water, holds 3 days as Rob Wealth. Mu, Yang Earth, holds 18 days and is the main stem, giving the branch its Ten God: Seven Killings (칠살 七殺, chilsal). Seven Killings is the hard-edged authority: challenge, risk, rank earned under pressure.
So the seat contains a controller (Mu), a rebel (Eul) and a sibling (Gye). Hurting Officer and Seven Killings in the same branch is a classic tension, because Hurting Officer pushes back against the very authority Seven Killings represents.
Im on Jin sits at the Tomb (묘 墓, myo) stage. Jin is the storehouse (고 庫, go) of Water, so many readers treat this tomb as a vault rather than an ending: energy stored, not spent. The Day Master is not at its peak here, yet it has reserves the visible chart may not show.
Character
Im-jin is a pillar of Goegang (괴강 魁罡, goegang), the set of pillars classical texts associate with strong will, intensity and a refusal to sit in the middle. Goegang people are often decisive, blunt and capable of leadership in difficult conditions. Today most readers simply say Im-jin does not do half-measures.
In ordinary life this shows up as stubborn patience. Im-jin can hold a position for a long time, then release it all at once like a sluice gate. Hurting Officer adds a sharp tongue; Seven Killings adds ambition.
The blind spots: Im-jin may hold back feelings too long and then overflow, and it can read disagreement as a challenge to its authority. Learning to let water out in small, regular amounts is the practical lesson.
The pillar also carries Yin-Yang Mismatch (음양차착 陰陽差錯, eumyang chachak), a traditional star read in connection with in-laws and mismatched expectations in marriage. Modern practitioners treat it lightly.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Seven Killings for Im-jin. In the classical reading this is a partner with strength and edge: someone forceful, demanding or ambitious, or a relationship that pushes both people. For a woman's chart, Seven Killings is also a traditional spouse star, so the seat is doubly marked. The healthy version is two people who respect each other's force. The strained version is a power struggle.
Traditional notes: Jeong-yu (丁酉) forms Im-jin's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap), with 丁 combining 壬 and 酉 combining 辰. Mu-sul (戊戌) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 戊 controls 壬 and 戌 clashes with 辰. These describe chemistry patterns between charts and are not predictions.
Work and money
The combination of Goegang and Seven Killings suits roles with rank and consequence: law, the military or police, surgery, crisis management, finance under pressure, founding a company.
None of Jin's hidden stems is a Wealth star for Im, so money usually follows position and authority rather than trading. The storehouse image fits Im-jin's style with money too: it tends to save and accumulate, then make a few large moves.
How Im-jin differs from the other Im pillars
- Im-sul (壬戌) also has Seven Killings Earth underneath, but Sul is dry autumn earth at Cap & Sash. It is more outward and ceremonial; Im-jin is deeper and more withheld.
- Im-ja (壬子) is pure Water at the Emperor stage with no controller at all.
- Im-o (壬午) sits over Fire with Direct Wealth in the seat, so its focus is income and partnership rather than rank.
- Im-in (壬寅) spends itself on output where Im-jin stores.
Im-jin follows Sin-myo (辛卯) and precedes Gye-sa (癸巳). More context is on the Im Day Master page and the Dragon page.
Im-jin in 2026–2030
The 2026 Byeong-o (丙午) year gives Indirect Wealth over Direct Wealth, so money and deals are in focus. 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) brings Direct Wealth over Direct Officer and a stem combination between 丁 and the Day Master 壬. 2028 Mu-sin (戊申) adds Seven Killings over Indirect Resource: more pressure on a pillar already built around it. 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) brings Direct Officer over Direct Resource, and 酉 forms a branch harmony (六合) with the day branch 辰, a traditionally cooperative sign for the spouse palace. 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌) is Indirect Resource over Seven Killings, with 戌 clashing against 辰. A clash of two storehouses is traditionally read as something long stored being opened. Use the day pillar calculator to see your full chart.
