Jeong-yu (丁酉) Day Pillar: Candlelight on the Jeweller's Bench
Jeong-yu (丁酉) is Jeong, Yin Fire, over Yu, the Metal Rooster. It is the 34th pair in the sixty-day cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja), after Byeong-sin (丙申) and before Mu-sul (戊戌). The image is a jeweller's bench at dusk: one candle, a loupe, and a tray of gold and silver pieces that catch the flame and throw it back a hundred times. The fire is small, but everything it touches looks valuable.

Fire controls Metal, so the Day Master (일간 日干, ilgan) works on its branch, and what the self controls is Wealth. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of 酉 are Gyeong (庚) Yang Metal for 10 days and Sin (辛) Yin Metal for 20 days. For Jeong, Gyeong is the Direct Wealth and Sin is the Indirect Wealth. Sin is the main stem, so the branch reads as Indirect Wealth. Like the Wood branch of Jeong-myo (丁卯), the branch holds a single element, but here it is all Wealth and no support.
A candle can soften metal and shape fine jewellery, but it cannot melt an ingot. Classical texts would say the Day Master needs Wood or Fire elsewhere to handle this much Wealth.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Jeong at 酉 is at Long Life (장생 長生, jangsaeng) in the reversed Yin cycle most Korean schools use. Schools that run Yin Fire on the Yang cycle would place it at Death instead, which shows how contested Yin-stem stages are. Practically, readers agree that Jeong has no Fire root in 酉 and draws its strength from the rest of the chart.
Stars on Jeong-yu
Jeong-yu is unusually well starred for learning and help:
- Heavenly Noble (천을귀인 天乙貴人), the best-known helpful star, traditionally meaning timely support from capable people.
- Academic Star (문창귀인 文昌貴人), linked to writing, exams and clear thinking.
- Hall of Learning (학당귀인 學堂貴人), linked to aptitude for study and scholarship.
Three such stars in one day branch are why many readers call Jeong-yu a refined, cultivated pillar.
Character
Jeong-yu people tend to be discerning, articulate and attentive to quality. They notice the flaw in a stone, the weak sentence in a paragraph, the price that is slightly wrong. The Rooster adds precision and a liking for order and presentation.
They are often well liked by elders and mentors, which fits the Heavenly Noble. Their blind spots are perfectionism, a critical eye that turns on themselves, and the risk of taking on more Wealth-side responsibility, such as money, clients or obligations, than a small flame can carry.
Relationships
The day branch is the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung). Indirect Wealth there traditionally describes, in a man's chart, an attractive and stylish partner; in any chart, a relationship with a lively social and financial side. The Heavenly Noble in the same branch is read as a supportive partner or in-laws who help. The caution is that a pillar sitting on Wealth may judge partners, or be judged, by appearances and money.
Traditional notes: Im-jin (壬辰) is the harmony pillar, with 丁 and 壬 combining and 酉 and 辰 combining, called 천지합 (天地合, cheonjihap). Gye-myo (癸卯) is the clash pillar, with 癸 controlling 丁 and 卯 clashing 酉, called 천극지충 (天剋地沖, cheongeuk jichung).
Work and money
Jeong-yu fits careers where taste, accuracy and value meet: finance and analysis, jewellery and luxury goods, editing and publishing, law, academia, appraisal, design with a commercial edge. The learning stars favour qualifications, and the Wealth seat favours putting a price on them. Income usually grows through expertise and clients rather than bulk effort.
How Jeong-yu differs from the other Jeong pillars
- Jeong-myo (丁卯), its clash opposite, sits only on Resource. Jeong-yu sits only on Wealth: one studies, the other appraises.
- Jeong-sa (丁巳) is at Emperor with Rob Wealth beneath it, strong and competitive. Jeong-yu is lighter and relies on helpers.
- Jeong-hae (丁亥) also carries the Heavenly Noble, but sits on the Direct Officer and leans toward duty and rank. Jeong-yu leans toward value and trade.
- Jeong-chuk (丁丑) stores Wealth slowly in cold Earth; Jeong-yu holds it out in the open.
Jeong-yu in 2026–2030
- 2026, Byeong-o (丙午): a Rob Wealth stem over a Friend branch. Fire arrives to support the flame: more confidence, more competition for money.
- 2027, Jeong-mi (丁未): a Friend stem over an Eating God branch. Productive work and allies.
- 2028, Mu-sin (戊申): a Hurting Officer stem over a Direct Wealth branch. Bold expression that earns.
- 2029, Gi-yu (己酉): an Eating God stem over an Indirect Wealth branch, on the same 酉 branch as the day pillar. Wealth themes double, with opportunity and pressure together.
- 2030, Gyeong-sul (庚戌): a Direct Wealth stem over a Hurting Officer branch. Pay for skill and clear communication.
The Void branches (공망 空亡, gongmang) for Jeong-yu are Jin 辰 Dragon and Sa 巳 Snake; see Void. Read the Jeong Day Master and Rooster pages for background, or look up your own pillar with the day pillar calculator.
