Goegang (괴강살 魁罡 goegangsal) is a special mark carried by four day pillars: Im-jin, Gyeong-sul, Gyeong-jin and Mu-sul. Tradition describes it as commanding intelligence and decisiveness, with a tendency toward extremes. Korean readers often summarize it in one phrase: a person with Goegang either rises very high or has to work through hard swings, and rarely lives a lukewarm life.

What it means

魁 and 罡 are names for stars of the Big Dipper, the constellation that in Chinese cosmology steers the heavens. The image is of something at the controls. Classical texts describe Goegang people as bright, bold, quick to judge and reluctant to take orders. Its traditional reputation is that of a sharp tool: excellent when the chart can carry it, overwhelming when it cannot.

Korean practice treats it as double-edged. The modern reading emphasizes leadership, clear thinking under pressure, high standards and a strong sense of justice, alongside impatience and a habit of seeing things in black and white. Older manuals also said it made marriage difficult for women, a view tied to expectations that a woman should not dominate a household. Contemporary readers generally set that aside and read the star the same way for everyone. As with any star, it never decides a chart by itself.

How it is found

Goegang is a property of the day pillar. Orienteller's engine flags it when your day pillar is one of four:

Worked example: someone born on an Im-jin day carries Goegang, as does someone born on a Gyeong-sul or Mu-sul day. All four pairs set a Yang stem over the Dragon or the Dog, the two branches that face each other across the circle.

Schools differ on the list. Some add Im-sul (壬戌) and Mu-jin (戊辰) to make six; Orienteller lists those two under White Tiger instead. Many Korean practitioners also note Goegang when one of these pillars sits in the year, month or hour position. Orienteller reports it for the day pillar, where it speaks about the person directly.

How it shows up in a reading

The single most-watched factor is the Dragon and Dog clash. Classical texts say Goegang dislikes being clashed, so a chart with Dragon and Dog both present, or a luck pillar bringing the opposing branch, is read as a period of turbulence or major redirection. Readers also note whether there are several Goegang pillars, which old texts read as amplifying the effect in both directions.

The Day Master strength and the Ten Gods matter next. Goegang suits a chart that can use force: a strong Day Master with outlets in output stars or structure in Officer stars. If the chart is already crowded with Wealth or Officer pressure, older texts warned the "commanding" quality could turn into strain. Helper stars such as Heaven Virtue and Moon Virtue are said to soften it, and the related Sharp Edge is often read alongside. FAQ

Is 괴강살 good or bad?

Both, which is why it is called double-edged. It is linked with intelligence and leadership, and with intensity that needs a chart able to carry it.

Which day pillars are Goegang?

In Orienteller: Im-jin, Gyeong-sul, Gyeong-jin and Mu-sul. Some schools also include Im-sul and Mu-jin.

Is Goegang bad for a woman's marriage?

That was an older view rooted in social expectations of its time. Modern practice reads Goegang as strength and independence for anyone, and judges relationships from the whole chart.
