Mu-sul (戊戌) Day Pillar: Goegang Yang Earth Dog in Korean Saju
Mu-sul (戊戌) is the 35th pillar of the sixty-pair cycle: Mu (戊) Yang Earth sitting on Sul (戌), the Earth branch of the Dog, in late autumn. Imagine a stone fortress on a mountain ridge at dusk, with a fire banked low inside its walls and weapons stored in the armoury. Everything about it says guard, keep and hold.
The image
Like Mu-jin (戊辰), this is Earth sitting on Earth. The main hidden stem (지장간, 支藏干, jijanggan) is Mu (戊) for 18 days, so the branch's Ten God is Friend (비견, 比肩, bigyeon). The difference lies in what the storehouse keeps. Sul holds:
- Sin (辛) Yin Metal, 9 days: Hurting Officer (상관, 傷官, sanggwan), sharp expression, critique, the urge to break rules that do not work.
- Jeong (丁) Yin Fire, 3 days: Direct Resource, a small hearth of learning and inner conviction.
- Mu (戊) Yang Earth, 18 days: Friend, the self.
Sul is called a "fire storehouse" (화고, 火庫, hwago). On the twelve life stages (십이운성, 十二運星, sibi-unseong), the engine puts Mu at Tomb (묘, 墓, myo) here, following the Fire track for Earth. Tomb is a storage stage: energy is gathered and put away rather than displayed. It pairs well with the image of a fortress. Schools that use a different track for Earth will name another stage, and some readers count a stem on its own-element branch as strong regardless.
Character
The first thing many Korean readers mention about this pillar is Goegang (괴강살, 魁罡, goegang-sal). Mu-sul is one of only four Goegang pillars. Traditionally Goegang describes a commanding, uncompromising temperament: high standards, strong leadership and a dislike of being managed. Old texts said it brings either great success or great difficulty depending on the chart; modern readers mostly treat it as a sign of intensity that wants responsibility.
Combine that with Friend and a hidden Hurting Officer and you get someone who:
- trusts their own judgement and rarely asks permission;
- protects people inside their walls fiercely and keeps outsiders at a distance;
- speaks bluntly when they finally speak, sometimes more bluntly than needed;
- remembers both favours and slights for a long time.
The Tomb stage adds reserve. Mu-sul often looks calmer than it feels, and keeps plans, resources and emotions locked away until it decides to act. The blind spot is rigidity: a fortress is excellent in a siege and awkward at a festival.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁, 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Friend. Traditionally that suggests a partner who is equal in strength, a co-leader or companion, and a relationship that needs clear territory. With Goegang in the same seat, classical readers advised a partner with their own firm identity rather than someone who will simply defer.
Mu-sul's heaven-and-earth combination pillar (천지합, 天地合, cheonji-hap) is Gye-myo (癸卯): 戊 with 癸, 戌 with 卯. Its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충, 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung) is Gap-jin (甲辰), where two storehouses collide. These are classical compatibility notes, not predictions. The Void branches (공망, 空亡, gongmang) are Jin (辰) Dragon and Sa (巳) Snake.
Work and money
Goegang and Friend favour roles with command and accountability: security, the military, law enforcement, legal practice, operations, surgery, heavy industry, and running one's own company. The Hurting Officer stored inside Sul adds a critic's eye, useful in audit, quality control, investigative work and reform projects.
Money tends to be saved and guarded. The Friend star warns about partnerships where control is unclear; Mu-sul works best when it owns its decisions.
How Mu-sul differs from the other Mu pillars
- Mu-jin (戊辰) is the wet spring storehouse with hidden Officer and Wealth, at Cap & Sash. Mu-sul is the dry autumn armoury with hidden Hurting Officer and Resource, at Tomb.
- Mu-o (戊午) displays its fire openly at Emperor; Mu-sul banks it.
- Mu-sin (戊申) uses Metal as easy-going Eating God; in Mu-sul the Metal is the sharper Hurting Officer.
- Mu-ja (戊子) is soft and resource-minded, the least Goegang-like of the six.
In the cycle it follows Jeong-yu (丁酉) and precedes Gi-hae (己亥). Stem background: Mu Yang Earth. Branch background: Dog page.
Mu-sul in 2026–2030
Two Resource years open the period: 2026 Byeong-o (丙午) brings Indirect Resource over Direct Resource, and 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) Direct Resource over Rob Wealth. The banked fire gets fuel, which is good for study and mentors, though 2027's Rob Wealth means rivals.
2028 Mu-sin (戊申) gives Friend over Eating God, an outlet year. 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) is Rob Wealth over Hurting Officer; Mu-sul's bluntness gets louder, so choose battles.
2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌) repeats the Dog branch: Eating God over Friend with the same branch as the day pillar. Readers expect the pillar's own patterns, guardedness and loyalty, to be amplified for the year.
