Gap-jin (甲辰) Day Pillar: Yang Wood Dragon, White Tiger and Wealth
Gap-jin (甲辰, 갑진) is the day pillar of Gap, Yang Wood, over Jin, the Dragon branch. It is number 41 of the sixty. Jin is the damp earth of late spring, the field after rain where reservoirs are full and the soil is soft. Imagine a large tree on a river terrace: plenty of ground to claim, water close to the roots, and a landscape that can either feed it for decades or shift under it in a flood.
The image
Wood breaks up and draws from Earth, so the branch is the Day Master's Wealth. In Ten God (십신 十神, sipsin) terms the main stem of Jin, Mu (Yang Earth, 18 days), is Indirect Wealth. Jin also stores two other hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan): Eul, Yin Wood, for 9 days as Rob Wealth, and Gye, Yin Water, for 3 days as Direct Resource.
That mix matters. Eul gives Gap a root of its own kind and Gye gives it a sip of water, so even though Gap at Jin sits in the Decline (쇠 衰, soe) stage of the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), the tree is not starved. Decline is the experienced adult past their physical peak: still capable, more cautious, better at judging terrain than at sprinting. Gap-jin is usually read as a Day Master of moderate strength standing on a large estate.
Character
Two named stars shape how this pillar is traditionally described.
Gap-jin is one of the classic pillars carrying the White Tiger (백호 白虎, baekho). Older manuals linked it to sudden, forceful events; modern readers usually translate it as intensity: a big presence, strong drive, a tendency to push hard once committed. Gap-jin people can be bold to the point of bluntness.
It also carries the Golden Carriage (금여 金輿, geumyeo), a gentler star associated with comfort, good manners and a supportive home life. The pairing reads as forceful in public, easygoing in private.
Their practical side is strong. Indirect Wealth reads opportunity, scale and timing, so Gap-jin often spots where land, money or attention can be gathered. Blind spots follow from that: overextending into too many ventures, treating people as part of the plan, and letting the Rob Wealth inside the branch turn partners into competitors.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Indirect Wealth. The traditional picture is a partner who is lively, sociable and resourceful, and a relationship that involves shared projects or shared money. In a man's chart, Wealth is the classical wife star, so it sitting in the palace is read as a strong marriage theme. The hidden Rob Wealth adds the classic caution about third parties or about friends entangled in the couple's finances.
Gi-yu (己酉) is Gap-jin's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 甲 with 己, 辰 with 酉. Gyeong-sul (庚戌) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung), where 庚 cuts 甲 and 戌 clashes 辰. As it happens, both of these pillars fall within the next five years, discussed below.
Work and money
Gap-jin fits work with large scope: property, construction, agriculture and land use, logistics, finance, founding and running organisations.
Money tends to come in larger, irregular amounts, which is typical of Indirect Wealth. The pillar's lesson is reserves. Gap-jin benefits from keeping cash aside and limiting how much is shared with partners on a handshake.
How Gap-jin differs from the other Gap pillars
- Gap-sul (甲戌) also sits on Earth with Indirect Wealth as the main branch god, but Sul is dry autumn soil with Direct Officer hidden inside. Gap-sul is more guarded; Gap-jin is wetter, bigger and more expansive.
- Gap-in (甲寅) stands on pure Wood in Officialdom. It has more self and less estate.
- Gap-o (甲午) spends itself through Hurting Officer in the Death stage; Gap-jin accumulates.
- Gap-ja (甲子) is fed by Resource and leans scholarly where Gap-jin leans commercial.
All six belong to the Gap Yang Wood Day Master. Gap-jin follows Gye-myo (癸卯) and precedes Eul-sa (乙巳) in the cycle, and the branch animal is described on the Dragon page.
Gap-jin in 2026–2030
| Year | Reading |
|---|---|
| 2026 Byeong-o (丙午) | Eating God over Hurting Officer: output and visibility |
| 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) | Hurting Officer over Direct Wealth: ideas turned into income |
| 2028 Mu-sin (戊申) | Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings: big opportunities with pressure |
| 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) | Direct Wealth over Direct Officer, with branch harmony and stem combination |
| 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌) | Seven Killings over Indirect Wealth, with a branch clash |
2029 is Gap-jin's own heaven-and-earth combination pillar arriving as the year: traditionally a year of agreements, partnerships and settling down. 2030 is the clash pillar arriving, with the Dog clashing the Dragon, which classical readers associate with moves, restructuring or a change in the home base. The Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches for this pillar are In (Tiger) and Myo (Rabbit), and neither appears in these years. Check your full chart with the day pillar calculator.
FAQ
Is Gap-jin a White Tiger pillar?
Yes. Gap-jin is one of the seven traditional White Tiger (baekho) day pillars. Modern readers interpret the star as intensity and drive rather than as a prediction of misfortune.
Is Gap-jin good for wealth?
The branch's main hidden stem is Indirect Wealth, so money and opportunity are strong themes. It favours large, irregular gains and needs discipline about reserves and shared finances.
What does 甲辰 mean in Saju?
甲辰 is Yang Wood over the Dragon, a damp spring Earth branch. It is pillar 41 of the sixty and is read as a large tree on rich, wet ground.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Dragon branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gap Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
| Hidden stem | Element | Share of the month | Ten God |
|---|---|---|---|
| 乙 Eul | Yin Wood | 9 days | Rob Wealth |
| 癸 Gye | Yin Water | 3 days | Direct Resource |
| 戊 Mu | Yang Earth | 18 days | Indirect Wealth |
