Gi-yu (己酉) is the 46th pillar of the sixty-pair cycle: Gi (己) Yin Earth on Yu (酉), the Metal branch of the Rooster in mid-autumn. The image is a field at harvest. The soil has done its work and the result is laid out in neat rows, cut with sharp tools and sorted by quality. Gi-yu is the Earth pillar most defined by what it produces and how carefully it produces it.

Earth produces Metal, so the Day Master flows into its seat. For Gi, Metal is Output, the Ten God family of expression, skill and craft. Yu holds two hidden stems (지장간, 支藏干, jijanggan), both Output:

Hidden stemDaysTen God for Gi
Gyeong (庚) Yang Metal10Hurting Officer
Sin (辛) Yin Metal20Eating God

The main stem Sin makes the branch Eating God (식신, 食神, siksin), the star of steady, satisfying production. The smaller Gyeong adds Hurting Officer (상관, 傷官, sanggwan): critique, wit and a refusal to accept sloppy work.

Output usually drains a Day Master, yet on the twelve life stages (십이운성, 十二運星, sibi-unseong) Orienteller's engine places Gi at Long Life (장생, 長生, jangsaeng) on Yu. That comes from the Fire track for Earth with yin stems counted in reverse, a method some schools reject. Taken on its own terms, it suggests that producing things renews this pillar rather than exhausting it. In plain element terms Gi-yu still has no Earth or Fire in its seat, so most readers check the other pillars for support.

Character

Gi-yu stands out in the Gi group for three named stars that all point toward learning and refinement:

Together with Eating God, these describe someone precise, articulate and quietly proud of good work. Gi-yu people often have a fine eye for detail, an editor's ear and a habit of polishing things others would call finished. Eating God keeps the tone pleasant; the hidden Hurting Officer sharpens it when standards slip.

Blind spots: perfectionism, a critical streak aimed at others and at themselves, and difficulty delegating because no one else does it quite right. Because the branch has no Wealth or Officer of its own, Gi-yu can also produce excellent work and then fail to sell it.

Relationships

The spouse palace (배우자궁, 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Eating God. Traditionally, for a woman this is a children star, and for anyone it suggests a relationship built on comfort, shared pleasures and attentiveness. Gi-yu often shows love through care in small things: the meal, the remembered date, the fixed hinge. The classical caution is that Hurting Officer in the same branch can turn attentiveness into correction.

Gi-yu's heaven-and-earth combination pillar (천지합, 天地合, cheonji-hap) is Gap-jin (甲辰): 己 combines with 甲, 酉 with 辰. The heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충, 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung) is Eul-myo (乙卯). Both are traditional chemistry notes. The Void branches (공망, 空亡, gongmang) are In (寅) Tiger and Myo (卯) Rabbit, the Wood of Gi's Officer stars.

Work and money

Gi-yu fits work where quality is measurable and expertise is respected: writing and editing, research, teaching, design, precision manufacturing, quality assurance, food and pastry, jewellery, dentistry, audit, software and data work. The study stars favour credentials, exams and academic or public-sector careers.

Money comes through skill. The practical lesson is pricing: Eating God can be too content with doing the work well, so Gi-yu benefits from a partner, agent or system that handles the commercial side.

How Gi-yu differs from the other Gi pillars

It follows Mu-sin (戊申), which shares the Academic Star and Eating God theme, and precedes Gyeong-sul (庚戌). For the stem see Gi Yin Earth; for the branch the Rooster page.

Gi-yu in 2026–2030

2026 Byeong-o (丙午) brings Direct Resource over Indirect Resource, and 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) Indirect Resource over Friend. Fire and Earth are exactly what an Output-heavy pillar lacks, so these read as supportive years for training, mentors and rebuilding energy.

2028 Mu-sin (戊申) is Rob Wealth over Hurting Officer: competitive, outspoken, good for pitching. 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) repeats the day pillar itself, Friend over Eating God with the same branch, so the pillar's habits of craft and perfectionism come to the front. 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌) is Hurting Officer over Rob Wealth, a year for bold ideas and some friction.

FAQ

What does the Gi-yu (己酉) day pillar mean?

Gi-yu is Yin Earth over the Metal Rooster, the 46th pillar of the cycle. It is read as precise, skilled and articulate, with Eating God in the spouse palace.

Which stars does Gi-yu carry?

The engine lists Academic Star, Hall of Learning and Officer Patron for Gi on Yu. All three are traditionally linked with study, teaching and recognition.

Is 2029 important for Gi-yu?

Yes. 2029 is itself a Gi-yu year, so the annual pillar repeats the day pillar. Traditionally that amplifies the pillar's existing patterns for the year.

Hidden stems in the branch

The Rooster branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gi Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.

Gi-yu and the years 2026–2030

Each year has its own pillar. Its stem and branch take Ten God roles for this Day Master, and its branch may combine or clash with your day branch.
