The Dragon is the only imaginary animal in the zodiac, but its branch is very concrete. In Korean Saju (사주) the Dragon is Jin (진 辰), the fifth Earthly Branch (지지 地支 jiji): Yang Earth in late spring, damp soil after the rains, ready for planting. Dragon years include 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024. Jin is also one of the "storehouse" branches, and what it stores is Water, which explains a lot about how readers treat it.

The branch behind the animal

Jin is Earth with Yang polarity. Its month starts at Cheongmyeong (청명 淸明, Clear and Bright) around April 5 and runs to about May 5, the third month of the Saju year and the last month of spring. Its hour is 07:00 to 09:00, mid-morning.

The four Earth branches each close a season and keep a trace of what came before. Jin's hidden stems (지장간 支藏干 jijanggan) are:

StemElementDaysRole
Eul 乙Yin Wood9Leftover spring Wood
Gye 癸Yin Water3Stored Water
Mu 戊Yang Earth18Main qi

So a Jin branch contains Wood, Water and Earth at once. The small Gye layer is the reason Jin belongs to the Water triple frame, and classical texts call Jin the "water storehouse" (수고 水庫). Whether that stored Water gets released depends on what other branches appear around it, a point covered in the Five Elements guide.

As your year branch, and as your day branch

When Koreans ask about your tti (띠), they want the animal of your year branch. In chart reading that branch belongs to the outer circle of life: ancestry, the family you grew up in, and the image you present in public. A Dragon year carries a traditional association with ambition and a large presence, which is one reason Dragon years have historically been popular for births in East Asia. Still, a year branch describes a whole cohort, not one person.

Closer in, the day branch (일지 日支 ilji) under your Day Master is the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮). It is read for partnership and for how you behave in private. Jin there gives the self a broad, fertile Earth base. Readers often say it is someone who carries a lot quietly, and because Jin hides Water and Wood, the partner relationship can have more layers than it first shows.

Harmony, triple frame and clash

These relationships are classical notes on how branches interact. Use them to understand a chart, not to rule anyone in or out.

Why your Saju year may differ from your zodiac year

Saju counts the year from Ipchun (입춘 立春), the start of spring, which falls around February 4. The popular zodiac usually counts from Lunar New Year. When those dates are far apart, births in between get two different animals.

A child born on February 6, 2024 is one of those cases. Ipchun had passed two days earlier, so the Saju year pillar is Gap-jin (甲辰), a Dragon. Lunar New Year 2024 did not come until February 10, so a popular zodiac chart would still list the child as a Rabbit from 2023's Gye-myo (癸卯) year. For Saju, Gap-jin is correct.

The five Dragon day pillars

As a Yang branch, Jin pairs with the five Yang stems. The Dragon day pillars are Gap-jin (甲辰), Byeong-jin (丙辰), Mu-jin (戊辰), Gyeong-jin (庚辰) and Im-jin (壬辰). Im-jin is the one where the Day Master shares the element Jin keeps in storage.

FAQ

Which years are Dragon years in Saju?

Dragon years include 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024, and the next is 2036. Each begins at Ipchun around February 4.

Why is the Dragon linked with Water if it is an Earth branch?

Jin's main qi is Mu (戊) Yang Earth, but it also holds three days of Gye (癸) Yin Water. That stored Water ties it to the Monkey and Rat in the Water triple frame.

What does the Dragon clash with?

Jin clashes with Sul, the Dog. Its six-harmony partner is Yu, the Rooster.
