Im-sul (壬戌) Day Pillar Meaning: Yang Water Dog, White Tiger
Im-sul (壬戌, 임술) is the 59th pillar, second to last in the sixty-pair cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja). It places Im, Yang Water, over Sul, the Dog, the dry earth of late autumn. Think of a river at dusk in October running up against a stone embankment: the water is still powerful, but the wall decides where it can go. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), Im-sul is about force meeting structure.
The image
Earth controls Water, and Sul is hard, dry earth that soaks up very little. The branch is the Day Master's controller. Its hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) are Sin, Yin Metal, for 9 days as Direct Resource; Jeong, Yin Fire, for 3 days as Direct Wealth; and Mu, Yang Earth, for 18 days as the main stem, which makes the branch Seven Killings (칠살 七殺, chilsal).
That is a useful arrangement. Seven Killings brings pressure; Direct Resource sits inside the same branch and converts pressure into support, a pattern classical texts call Killings transformed by Resource (살인상생 殺印相生, sarin sangsaeng). The Day Master is pushed, then backed.
Im on Sul is at Cap & Sash (관대 冠帶, gwandae), the stage of a young adult putting on formal clothes for the first time: confident, presentable, ready to take a public role. The Day Master is moderately strong here, enough to stand up to the Seven Killings rather than be flattened by it.
Character
Im-sul is the most disciplined of the Im pillars. It responds well to pressure, often seeks out hard tasks, and tends to carry itself with a certain formality. People with this pillar can seem older than their age when young.
Three stars from the engine colour the picture:
- White Tiger (백호 白虎, baekho) is a traditional star of intensity and sudden events. Older texts treated it as a warning about accidents and bloodshed; most modern readers interpret it as forceful energy that is best channelled into demanding work.
- The Officer Patron star is read as favour from institutions and superiors, which fits Im-sul's Seven Killings seat.
- Yin-Yang Mismatch (음양차착 陰陽差錯, eumyang chachak) is traditionally linked to friction with in-laws and mismatched family expectations.
Blind spots: Im-sul can hold itself to rules so tightly that it becomes rigid, and its temper, when the embankment finally gives, can surprise people. It may also accept too much responsibility out of duty rather than choice.
Relationships
Seven Killings in the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) traditionally means a partner with authority or edge: driven, protective, sometimes controlling. In a woman's chart it is also the classic sign of a strong-willed husband. Im-sul often respects a partner who challenges it. The traditional caution is that respect can harden into contest, especially with Yin-Yang Mismatch suggesting in-law friction.
The small Direct Wealth stem inside Sul softens this: there is warmth and practical care in the seat, just not at the surface.
Traditional notes: Jeong-myo (丁卯) is Im-sul's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 丁 combines 壬 and 卯 combines 戌. Mu-jin (戊辰) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 戊 controls 壬 and 辰 clashes 戌. Neither is a forecast about a specific couple.
Work and money
Im-sul thrives in hierarchies with clear stakes: public service, the military, law enforcement, compliance, large-company management, medicine, construction and engineering projects with deadlines. The Officer Patron star and Cap & Sash stage both support visible rank.
Money comes through position more than speculation. Direct Wealth is present but minor, so income tends to follow promotion and responsibility.
How Im-sul differs from the other Im pillars
- Im-jin (壬辰) is its clash branch and closest relative. Both sit on Seven Killings Earth, but Jin is a wet storehouse at Tomb with Goegang, so Im-jin is more inward and volcanic; Im-sul is more upright and public.
- Im-sin (壬申) is fed by Indirect Resource with no controlling force as its main stem.
- Im-o (壬午) sits on Direct Wealth as its main Ten God, which makes it more domestic and commercial.
- Im-ja (壬子) has no Earth at all to hold it in.
Neighbours in the cycle: Sin-yu (辛酉) before and Gye-hae (癸亥) after. See the Im Day Master and Dog pages for the stem and branch in general.
Im-sul in 2026–2030
Im-sul starts the period facing outward. The 2026 Byeong-o (丙午) year puts Indirect Wealth over Direct Wealth, a money-focused stretch, and 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) follows with Direct Wealth over Direct Officer plus a stem combination between 丁 and 壬, so agreements and commitments come up. In 2028, Mu-sin (戊申) brings Seven Killings over Indirect Resource: more pressure, with Metal support arriving at the same time. 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) is Direct Officer over Direct Resource, which favours recognition through proper channels. The cycle closes with 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌), Indirect Resource over Seven Killings, carrying the same branch as the day branch. The pillar's own theme of pressure and structure doubles that year.
