Direct Resource (正印) in Saju: Support, Learning and the Mother Star
Direct Resource (정인 正印 jeongin) is the Ten God for the element that produces your Day Master, in the opposite polarity. Wood produces Fire, so for Yin Fire Jeong the Direct Resource is Yang Wood Gap. Earth produces Metal, so for Yang Metal Gyeong it is Yin Earth Gi. It represents the support that feeds you without asking much in return: a parent's care, formal education, qualifications, and the reassurance of being backed.
The character 印 (in) means a seal, the official stamp a scholar or magistrate carried. That is why Resource stars are tied to documents, certificates and recognised learning. The Ten Gods overview shows how it pairs with Indirect Resource.
What it represents
- Learning and qualifications. Degrees, licences, examinations, academic work, anything that ends with an official stamp.
- Protection and care. Being looked after, and the patience to look after others.
- Reputation for integrity. Readers associate it with a calm, considerate manner and with trust earned slowly.
- The mother, in the family scheme. In the six-relations system (육친 六親 yukchin), Direct Resource is the mother in everyone's chart. That is one of the few family readings that classical texts applied to men and women alike, though modern readers often widen it to any steady source of care.
The image is roots drawing water. The tree does not have to chase it; it is fed by what surrounds it.
When it helps
Direct Resource is most valuable when the Day Master is weak. It strengthens the self directly, which makes it the natural remedy for a chart under heavy pressure. Classical texts prize two patterns:
- Officer and Resource producing each other (관인상생 官印相生). The Officer's element produces the Resource, and the Resource produces the self. Readers describe steady advancement in institutions: position leads to education, education to position.
- Hurting Officer wearing a seal (상관패인 傷官佩印). Resource controls Output, so Direct Resource disciplines a sharp Hurting Officer and turns raw talent into recognised expertise.
When it becomes too much
Support can overwhelm. When a strong Day Master receives still more Resource, readers describe dependence, passivity, and a habit of studying or planning instead of acting. A heavy Resource can also cut off Output, so the person knows a great deal but shows little of it. Classical texts phrase an extreme form as "too much mother spoils the child" (모왕자쇠 母旺子衰).
Wealth is Resource's natural check: its element controls Resource's element. A chart with strong Wealth and exposed Direct Resource is read as practical demands pulling the person away from study or from family support. A chart with no Resource at all is often read as someone who learned to stand alone early.
In practice
Two worked examples from the table on this page:
For a Jeong (丁) Day Master, Direct Resource is Gap (甲), and it appears in the branch 寅 Tiger. This is one of the most quoted images in Saju: a candle flame fed by good, dry firewood. A Jeong person with a Tiger in the month or day branch has a reliable fuel supply, and readers often describe steady support from family or teachers. Classical texts add that the Gap is best when Metal is available to split it into usable kindling, a nice example of how one Ten God depends on others.
For a Gyeong (庚) Day Master, Direct Resource is Gi (己), and it appears in the branches 丑 Ox and 未 Goat. Ore resting in soft earth is the picture: Earth produces and protects Metal. A Gyeong person born in the Ox month, late winter, has Direct Resource in the month branch, though readers note that the cold, damp Earth of the Ox supports Metal differently from the warm, dry Earth of the Goat.
Its pair
Direct Resource pairs with Indirect Resource (편인 偏印). Both are the element that produces you. Direct Resource has the opposite polarity; Indirect Resource shares yours.
The usual contrast is mainstream versus specialist. Direct Resource is the school, the qualification and the parent who wants you to succeed on familiar terms. Indirect Resource is the mentor with an unusual method and the skill you taught yourself. Direct Resource sits comfortably with the Eating God; Indirect Resource tends to cut it off. Many readers consider a chart with one clear Direct Resource among the most stable configurations.
