Yin-Yang Mismatch (음착양차) Day Pillars and Their Meaning
Yin-Yang Mismatch (음착양차 陰錯陽差 eumchak yangcha) is a mark carried by certain day pillars, traditionally linked with relationships where timing, expectations or family arrangements do not line up. It has two halves, the Yin Mismatch (음착살) and the Yang Mismatch (양차살), and Orienteller's engine flags it when your day pillar appears on either list. It is a reading about friction and adjustment, not about whether a relationship succeeds.
What it means
陰錯陽差 is an old Chinese idiom for things going wrong through a slight misalignment, like two people arriving at the right place at different times. Classical manuals applied it to marriage: delays before marrying, difficulty with in-laws, a partner whose family background differs sharply from one's own, or a relationship that works on paper but feels out of step.
Modern readers translate this into practical terms. The mark suggests a person whose relationships benefit from explicit communication, because assumptions do not transfer easily. It can also describe unconventional arrangements that work well: long-distance partnerships, late marriages, blended families or relationships across cultures. Korean practice treats it as double-edged, since the same independence from convention that causes friction can produce a partnership that fits both people better. A single mark never decides a chart.
How it is found
The mark is a property of the day pillar. Orienteller lists six pillars for each half.
- Yang Mismatch (陽差): Byeong-o (丙午), Jeong-mi (丁未), Mu-sin (戊申), Sin-yu (辛酉), Im-sul (壬戌), Gye-hae (癸亥).
- Yin Mismatch (陰錯): Jeong-chuk (丁丑), Eul-sa (乙巳), Im-jin (壬辰), Mu-in (戊寅), Gap-sul (甲戌), Sin-myo (辛卯).
Worked example: someone born on a Byeong-o day has the Yang Mismatch; so does someone born on a Sin-yu day. A person with an Eul-sa day pillar has the Yin Mismatch. A Byeong-in day pillar carries neither.
Lists vary between sources more than for most stars, in which pillars are included and in which half they belong to. A widely printed list of twelve includes Byeong-ja (丙子) and Gye-sa (癸巳), which Orienteller's table does not, and leaves out Gap-sul and Eul-sa, which it does. If another source shows a different result for your day pillar, this is the likely reason. Some readers also count the mark when one of these pillars appears in the month or hour position; Orienteller flags it only for the day pillar.
How it shows up in a reading
Because the day branch is the spouse palace, readers look at what that branch is doing. If it is clashed by another branch in the chart, or by a luck pillar, the classical reading is a period when relationship arrangements shift. If it sits in a harmony, the misalignment is read as easier to reconcile.
Readers also check the partnership stars among the Ten Gods. A chart whose partnership stars are well supported is read as able to absorb the friction. Several Yin-Yang Mismatch pillars overlap with other special marks: Im-sul is also a White Tiger pillar, and Im-jin is also a Goegang pillar, so a careful reader looks at the whole day pillar rather than any single label. The Lone and Widow Stars are the other common relationship cautions. Find your day pillar with the free day pillar calculator and see related entries in the glossary.
FAQ
What is 음착살 or 양차살?
They are the Yin and Yang halves of the Yin-Yang Mismatch, a mark on certain day pillars that tradition linked with mismatched timing in relationships and family.
Does Yin-Yang Mismatch mean my marriage will fail?
No. It describes friction that benefits from clear communication. Relationship outcomes depend on the whole chart and, above all, the people involved.
Why do different sites list different pillars?
The traditional lists vary in membership and in which pillars count as Yin or Yang. Orienteller uses one fixed table shown on this page.
