Indirect Resource (偏印) in Saju: Intuition and Unusual Learning
Indirect Resource (편인 偏印 pyeonin) is the Ten God for the element that produces your Day Master, in the same polarity. Fire produces Earth, so for Yang Earth Mu the Indirect Resource is Yang Fire Byeong. Earth produces Metal, so for Yin Metal Sin it is Yin Earth Gi. It is support that comes in an unusual form: intuition, specialist or self-taught knowledge, and a mind that works best alone.
Korean readers also call it hyosin (효신 梟神), the "owl spirit", a name that comes from the way it can cut off the Eating God. That reputation makes it sound worse than it is. The Ten Gods overview shows its place in the Resource group alongside Direct Resource.
What it represents
- Unconventional learning. Niche expertise, technical depth, research, the craft knowledge that is not taught in a standard course.
- Intuition and insight. Readers link it to fields such as philosophy, psychology, religion, traditional medicine, design and, yes, fortune-telling.
- Independence of mind. Preferring to think things through alone, distrust of received wisdom, an eye for the odd detail.
- A secondary mother figure, in the family scheme. In the six-relations system (육친 六親 yukchin) Direct Resource is the mother and Indirect Resource a stepmother, grandmother or other caregiver. Many readers today simply read it as support that comes with conditions or from an unexpected source.
Where Direct Resource is a parent's unconditional care, Indirect Resource is a mentor with strong opinions: valuable, but not always comfortable.
When it helps
Indirect Resource supports a weak Day Master. If a chart is under heavy pressure from Seven Killings, Indirect Resource can absorb that pressure and pass it on to the self as strength, the pattern called "Killings and Resource producing each other" (살인상생 殺印相生). Readers describe people who grow sharper and more capable under hardship, often by learning a skill nobody else has.
It is also a buffer against too much Output. When a chart has a heavy Hurting Officer, a measure of Indirect Resource reins in the sharp tongue and turns it into analysis.
When it becomes too much
The classic warning is "the owl stealing the food" (도식 倒食). Indirect Resource's element controls the Eating God's element in the same polarity, so when both appear and the Indirect Resource is strong, the Eating God's easy enjoyment and steady output get cut off. Readers translate this into plans that stall, interrupted income, appetite or enthusiasm that drops away, and a tendency to overthink.
Too much Resource of either kind over a Day Master that is already strong is read as passivity: plenty of learning and support, not much action. A chart with no Resource at all can mean the person learned through doing rather than through teachers, and may find it harder to rest.
In practice
Two Day Masters from the table on this page show where it appears.
For a Mu (戊) Day Master, Indirect Resource is Byeong (丙), and it appears in the branch 巳 Snake. The image is the sun warming a mountain from above. A Mu person born in the Snake month, early summer, has Indirect Resource in the month branch and is usually read as strong and well supported. The reader's next question is whether Wood or Metal is present to give that strength a use, or whether the chart is simply very full of Fire and Earth.
For a Sin (辛) Day Master, Indirect Resource is Gi (己), and it appears in the branches 丑 Ox and 未 Goat. Classical writers had a specific worry here: Gi is soft, damp Earth, and too much of it is said to "bury" a delicate gem. So for Sin, a moderate amount of Indirect Resource is support, while a chart full of Ox and Goat branches is the textbook case of Resource smothering the self.
Its pair
Indirect Resource pairs with Direct Resource (정인 正印). Both are the element that produces you. Indirect Resource shares your polarity; Direct Resource has the opposite polarity.
| Indirect Resource | Direct Resource | |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity | Same as Day Master | Opposite |
| Kind of support | Specialist, conditional, intuitive | Broad, nurturing, conventional |
| Learning style | Self-taught, niche | Formal education, credentials |
A useful shorthand: Direct Resource gives you a degree, Indirect Resource gives you a strange and valuable skill.
FAQ
What is Indirect Resource in Saju?
Indirect Resource (편인 偏印) is the element that produces your Day Master, with the same polarity. It represents intuition, specialist knowledge, independent thinking and conditional support.
Why is Indirect Resource called the owl?
Its Korean nickname hyosin (효신 梟神) refers to the pattern where it controls and cuts off the Eating God. Classical texts compared this to an owl taking food from its young.
Is Indirect Resource good or bad?
It depends on the chart. It is valuable for a weak Day Master or under heavy Seven Killings, and it becomes a problem mainly when it overwhelms the Eating God or an already strong self.
