Gye-sa (癸巳) Day Pillar: Yin Water Snake, Mist on Sunlit Rock
Gye-sa (癸巳, 계사) is the 30th pillar of the sixty-pair cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja). It sets Gye, Yin Water, over Sa, the Snake, the Fire branch of early summer and late morning. Picture a light shower falling on warm granite in May: the stone steams, the air turns to mist, and the rain disappears almost as soon as it lands. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), Gye-sa holds a small amount of water on top of a great deal of heat, and that tension shapes the whole reading.
The image
Water controls Fire, so the branch is the Day Master's Wealth. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of Sa are a full set of useful Ten Gods for Gye. Mu, Yang Earth, holds 7 days and is Direct Officer. Gyeong, Yang Metal, holds 7 days as Direct Resource. Byeong, Yang Fire, holds 16 days as the main stem, which makes the branch Direct Wealth (정재 正財, jeongjae).
Classical writers prize this combination: Wealth produces Officer, Officer produces Resource, and Resource supports the Day Master. There is also a hidden link: 戊 inside Sa combines with the Day Master 癸, a quiet bond between the self and its seat.
The catch is strength. Gye on Sa is at Conception (태 胎, tae), the seed stage, with little force of its own. Light rain on hot stone evaporates. Gye-sa charts are usually read looking for Metal and Water elsewhere, so the Day Master can carry the wealth and status the branch offers.
The Heavenly Noble (천을귀인 天乙貴人, cheoneul gwiin) sits on this pillar, the traditional star of benefactors. The Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are O (Horse) and Mi (Goat).
Character
Gye-sa people often appear cool and composed while being quite warm underneath. They are perceptive about people and quick to see an opportunity; the Snake branch adds subtlety and strategy. Many are good at managing time, money and information.
Because the seat is so well organised, Gye-sa can be conventional in its goals: a stable job, a respectable home, recognition. That is a strength in institutions. It also means this pillar can find itself living by others' standards.
The blind spot is overreach. With a weak Day Master facing strong Wealth, Gye-sa may promise more than it can deliver or run on nervous energy for long stretches. Recognising when the stone is too hot and stepping back is the practical skill.
Relationships
Direct Wealth in the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) is a traditional sign of a reliable, practical partner and of loyalty to shared life. In a man's chart, Direct Wealth is also the classical wife star. The hidden 戊癸 combination strengthens the bond with the partner. In a woman's chart, that same 戊 is Direct Officer, the classical husband star, so the seat is read as relationship-centred for both.
The traditional caution: Gye-sa may give its partner, or the household budget, more weight than its own wellbeing.
Traditional notes: Mu-sin (戊申) is Gye-sa's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap), as 戊 combines 癸 and 申 combines 巳. Gi-hae (己亥) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung), as 己 controls 癸 and 亥 clashes 巳. These are patterns for chart comparison only.
Work and money
Finance, accounting, administration, property, law, public service and business management all suit the Wealth-Officer-Resource chain in this branch. Gye-sa often rises steadily inside an organisation where diligence is recognised.
Wealth is close at hand, and the main constraint is energy. The usual advice for a Conception-stage Day Master over Wealth is steady accumulation, insurance against downside and avoiding ventures that demand constant personal stamina.
How Gye-sa differs from the other Gye pillars
- Gye-hae (癸亥) sits on its clash branch and reverses its balance: Water on Water at Emperor, with Rob Wealth in place of Direct Wealth.
- Gye-myo (癸卯) shares the Heavenly Noble star but earns through Eating God craft at Long Life rather than Wealth at Conception.
- Gye-mi (癸未) also sits on summer heat, yet its main force is Seven Killings, so its life is shaped by pressure more than income.
- Gye-yu (癸酉) is fed by Resource and has no Wealth star in its branch.
Gye-sa follows Im-jin (壬辰) and precedes Gap-o (甲午). Background on the stem and branch is on the Gye Day Master and Snake pages.
Gye-sa in 2026–2030
2026 Byeong-o (丙午) brings Direct Wealth over Indirect Wealth: more Fire for a pillar already rich in it, so a busy, money-heavy year that can tire a weak Day Master. 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) gives Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings. 2028 Mu-sin (戊申) stands out: Direct Officer over Direct Resource, and it is Gye-sa's own 천지합 pillar, forming both a stem combination with 癸 and a branch harmony (六合) with 巳. Traditional readers associate that with partnership, appointments and formal commitments. 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) is Seven Killings over Indirect Resource, and 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌) is Direct Resource over Direct Officer, a supportive pairing. FAQ
What is the Gye-sa day pillar known for?
Gye-sa is Yin Water over Fire with Direct Wealth, Direct Officer and Direct Resource hidden in its branch. It is traditionally read as orderly, practical and relationship-centred, with a Day Master that needs support.
Does Gye-sa have Heavenly Noble?
Yes. The Sa branch is a Heavenly Noble branch for the Gye Day Master, so the star sits on the day pillar itself.
Why is 2028 significant for Gye-sa?
2028 is the Mu-sin year, which forms a stem combination and a branch harmony with Gye-sa. Classical texts read that as a year of strong bonds and formal commitments.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Snake branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gye Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.

|---|---|---|---|
| 戊 Mu | Yang Earth | 7 days | Direct Officer |
| 庚 Gyeong | Yang Metal | 7 days | Direct Resource |
