Indirect Wealth (偏財) in Saju: Windfalls, Ventures and Risk
Indirect Wealth (편재 偏財 pyeonjae) is the Ten God for the element your Day Master controls, in the same polarity. Wood controls Earth, so for Yang Wood Gap the Indirect Wealth is Yang Earth Mu. Water controls Fire, so for Yin Water Gye it is Yin Fire Jeong. Traditionally it represents money that moves: business income, deals, investments and windfalls, as opposed to the fixed salary of Direct Wealth.
The character 偏 (pyeon) means "partial" or "one-sided". In the Ten Gods system it marks the same-polarity version of a relationship, the less balanced and more forceful one. The Ten Gods overview shows this pattern across all five pairs.
What it represents
- Variable income. Commissions, trading, a business of your own, freelance projects, money earned in large irregular amounts.
- Scale and circulation. Readers associate Indirect Wealth with handling other people's money, wide networks and a feel for opportunity.
- Generosity. Money that comes easily is also spent easily, often on others.
- The father, and in old texts other women. In the six-relations system (육친 六親 yukchin), Indirect Wealth is the father in many Korean schools. Older Chinese texts also read it as a secondary partner in a man's chart. Modern readers rarely use that last reading and apply the father meaning to everyone.
The image classical writers used is a market rather than a granary. Goods flow through and the trader takes a share; nothing is stored for long.
When it helps
Indirect Wealth is useful when the Day Master is strong enough to "hold" it. A strong self plus healthy Indirect Wealth is the textbook profile of someone who does well in business: confident with risk, comfortable negotiating, able to turn a network into revenue. When Output feeds this Wealth, the reading becomes talent or product turning into sales.
It also supports the Officer stars, because Wealth produces the element that controls the Day Master. A chart with Wealth flowing into Officer is read as money that leads to position or influence.
When it becomes too much
If the Day Master is weak, Indirect Wealth is a load it cannot carry. The classical phrase is "wealth too heavy, self too light" (재다신약 財多身弱): the person sees opportunities everywhere but lacks the strength to keep them, so money and energy slip away. Readers link this to overextension, too many projects and risky bets.
Indirect Wealth also controls Resource. Wealth's element controls the element that produces you, so heavy Indirect Wealth can push out the support and learning that Resource represents. When Indirect Wealth is absent, a reader may simply note that money tends to come through salary or other people rather than personal ventures.
In practice
Two examples from the table on this page show where Indirect Wealth sits.
For a Jeong (丁) Day Master, Indirect Wealth is Sin (辛), and it appears in the branch 酉 Rooster. A candle flame working fine jewellery is the classical image: delicate heat shaping a small precious thing. A Jeong person born in the Rooster month, mid-autumn, has Indirect Wealth in the month branch, a setup readers associate with skill at valuing and trading things, provided the Fire is strong enough.
For an Im (壬) Day Master, Indirect Wealth is Byeong (丙), and it appears in the branch 巳 Snake. A great river reflecting the sun is the picture here. Im is a large, mobile stem, and big Yang Fire as its Wealth is read as ambition on a wide scale. If the Im is weak, though, the summer Fire of the Snake can dry it out, a case of "wealth too heavy".
Its pair
Indirect Wealth pairs with Direct Wealth (정재 正財). Both are the element you control. Indirect Wealth shares your polarity; Direct Wealth has the opposite polarity.
| Indirect Wealth | Direct Wealth | |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity | Same as Day Master | Opposite |
| Money style | Irregular, large, from ventures | Regular, earned, saved |
| Traditional family role | Father | Wife, in a man's chart |
Neither is "better". A salaried accountant and a market trader both need money skills; they simply use different ones.
