Rob Wealth (劫財) in Saju: Competition, Risk and Your Money
Rob Wealth (겁재 劫財 geopjae) is the Ten God for any character that has the same element as your Day Master but the opposite polarity. For a Yang Wood Gap Day Master, Rob Wealth is Yin Wood Eul; for a Yin Water Gye Day Master, it is Yang Water Im. It is a sibling-like force that strengthens you, and its name comes from the fact that its element controls your Direct Wealth. Traditionally it stands for competition, bold action and pressure on money.
The name sounds alarming, which is why it is often misunderstood. The Ten Gods overview explains the full logic; here the focus is what this one does in practice.
What it represents
Rob Wealth belongs to the "self" group with the Friend. Its traditional domains:
- Rivals and competitive peers. Colleagues on the same ladder, siblings who compete for attention, friends who are also benchmarks.
- Drive and nerve. A strong appetite for winning, readiness to take risks, impatience with slow processes.
- Pressure on resources. The classical reason for the name. Rob Wealth's element controls the stem that is Direct Wealth for you, so the old texts treat it as the star that takes your share. In the family-role system (육친 六親 yukchin) it is a sibling, often the sibling of the opposite sex, and in a man's chart it was read as a threat to the wife star. Modern readers mostly drop the gendered layer and read it as competition for whatever you value.
A good image is a teammate who is also your rival. You run faster because they are there, and you also keep an eye on your wallet.
When it helps
In a weak chart, Rob Wealth is valuable support. If the Day Master is surrounded by Officers pressing on it, or by Wealth it cannot hold, Rob Wealth adds strength in a more forceful way than the Friend does. Readers associate this with people who thrive in sales, sport, startups and other settings where pushing harder gets results.
Classical texts also note that, for a Yang Day Master, Rob Wealth combines with Seven Killings (Eul binds Gyeong for a Gap Day Master, for instance), tying up pressure aimed at the self. A chart with heavy pressure and a well-placed Rob Wealth often reads as someone who fights back rather than folding.
When it becomes too much
The main warning is the one in the name. When the Day Master is already strong, extra Rob Wealth turns into "rivals fighting over wealth" (군겁쟁재 群劫爭財): money leaks out through shared ventures, loans to friends, speculative bets or a habit of spending to keep up. Readers also mention rash decisions and trouble working under rules.
Absence is less discussed but still meaningful. A weak Day Master with no Rob Wealth or Friend may find it hard to compete or to say no. As always, Luck Pillars change the picture, bringing Rob Wealth in for a decade and then taking it away.
In practice
Here are two cases from the full table.
For a Gap (甲) Day Master, Rob Wealth is Eul (乙), and it appears in the branch 卯 Rabbit. A Gap person born in the Rabbit month, mid-spring, has Rob Wealth in the month branch. Wood is then at full strength, so a reader would check whether Earth, Gap's Wealth, is strong enough to survive the competition. If it is thin, the classic reading is money that comes in and goes out quickly.
For a Gi (己) Day Master, Rob Wealth is Mu (戊), and it appears in the branches 辰 Dragon and 戌 Dog. A soft Yin Earth stem meeting hard Yang Earth is like a garden bed next to a mountain. In a weak Gi chart, that mountain shelters and supports. In a chart already full of Earth, it crowds out Gi's Water, which is its Wealth.
Its pair
Rob Wealth pairs with the Friend (비견 比肩). Both are your own element. The Friend shares your polarity; Rob Wealth has the opposite one.
The difference is usually described as manner. The Friend is a peer who stands beside you and competes in the open. Rob Wealth is more opportunistic and forceful, quicker to act and quicker to take. Some readers summarise it as "the Friend shares, Rob Wealth grabs", which is memorable but too neat: in a chart that needs strength, Rob Wealth is often the more useful of the two.
FAQ
Is Rob Wealth bad in Saju?
No. Rob Wealth strengthens the Day Master, which helps a weak chart. It becomes a problem mainly when the Day Master is already strong, where it is read as competition and leaking money.
Why is it called Rob Wealth?
Its element controls the element that is your Wealth, and it shares the polarity of your Direct Wealth, which classical theory treats as the harshest form of control. Classical texts therefore saw it as the star that takes your share.
How is Rob Wealth calculated?
Find a stem with the same element as your Day Master and the opposite polarity. For a Gap (甲) Yang Wood Day Master that is Eul (乙) Yin Wood, and for a Gi (己) Yin Earth Day Master it is Mu (戊) Yang Earth.
