Mu-sin (戊申) Day Pillar: Yang Earth Monkey, the Mountain with a Mine
Mu-sin (戊申) is the 45th pillar of the sixty-pair cycle. Mu (戊) Yang Earth sits on Sin (申), the Metal branch of the Monkey, in the early autumn. The picture is a mountain with a working mine in its side: ore, tools and a constant stream of things being brought out into the light. The mountain's value is in what it produces.
The image
Earth produces Metal, so the stem flows into the branch. For Mu, Metal is Output, the Ten God family of expression, skill and results. The main hidden stem (지장간, 支藏干, jijanggan) is Gyeong (庚) Yang Metal for 16 days, which is Eating God (식신, 食神, siksin): steady, enjoyable production, the craftsperson's star.
The minor stems fill in the picture. Mu (戊), 7 days, is Friend, a little self-support. Im (壬), 7 days, is Indirect Wealth: water that Metal feeds, so output turns into money and opportunity. The chain Earth to Metal to Water, self to skill to income, sits complete inside one branch. Classical readers call this "Eating God generating Wealth" (식신생재, 食神生財, siksin-saengjae) and rate it highly.
The cost is energy. On the twelve life stages (십이운성, 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Mu on Sin is at Sickness (병, 病, byeong), a stage of declining force after the summer peak. The name sounds worse than it is: it describes a Day Master that gives more than its seat gives back, so it needs rest, Fire and Earth elsewhere. Orienteller uses the Fire track for Earth; schools that do otherwise reach a different stage.
Character
Mu-sin people are often practical, inventive and busy. They like to make things work and to see tangible results. Eating God gives a relaxed, good-humoured side, and the Monkey branch adds quickness and a fondness for movement and travel. Compared with the stillness people expect from a mountain, this one is surprisingly mobile.
Three named stars appear here. Mu on Sin carries the Academic Star (문창귀인, 文昌貴人, munchang-gwiin), a traditional sign of skill with words, study and exams, and Hidden Pay (암록, 暗祿, amnok), associated with unseen help or income arriving through quiet channels. 戊申 is also one of the Yin-Yang Mismatch pillars (양차살, 陽差, yangcha), an old label for friction around marriage timing and in-laws that many modern readers give little weight.
Blind spots:
- Spreading energy over too many projects, a natural risk of Output at the Sickness stage.
- Choosing comfort and enjoyment over the harder next step.
- Underestimating how tired they are until the work stops.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁, 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Eating God. Traditionally, for a woman this is a children star, and for anyone it suggests a relationship built on shared enjoyment, food, humour and doing things together. Mu-sin is often a warm, generous partner who expresses care through effort. The traditional caution is that Output can turn the partner into another project to manage.
The heaven-and-earth combination partner (천지합, 天地合, cheonji-hap) is Gye-sa (癸巳), since 戊 combines 癸 and 申 combines 巳. The heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충, 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung) is Gap-in (甲寅). These are traditional notes on chart chemistry. The Void branches (공망, 空亡, gongmang) of Mu-sin are In (寅) Tiger and Myo (卯) Rabbit, both Wood, which classical readers connect with Officer themes feeling less solid.
Work and money
This is one of the best pillars in the Mu group for turning skill into income. Engineering, manufacturing, food and hospitality, product design, logistics, trade, writing, teaching and technical sales all fit Eating God plus Indirect Wealth. The Academic Star favours anything with exams or written expertise.
Money tends to come from output, not from holding still. The practical advice is pacing: build systems or a team so income does not depend on constant personal effort.
How Mu-sin differs from the other Mu pillars
- Mu-in (戊寅) is its branch-clash mirror. Mu-in is under pressure from Seven Killings at Long Life; Mu-sin is spending energy through Eating God at Sickness.
- Mu-o (戊午) accumulates Resource; Mu-sin pours itself into output.
- Mu-ja (戊子) holds Wealth directly; Mu-sin reaches Wealth through work.
- Mu-sul (戊戌) also has Metal inside, but as Hurting Officer in a storehouse, which makes it sharper and more critical.
Its neighbours are Jeong-mi (丁未) and Gi-yu (己酉). Read the stem at Mu Yang Earth and the branch at the Monkey page.
Mu-sin in 2026–2030
- 2026 Byeong-o (丙午): Indirect Resource over Direct Resource. Fire restores the tired mountain; good for training and recovery.
- 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未): Direct Resource over Rob Wealth. More support, plus competition from peers.
- 2028 Mu-sin (戊申): The year repeats the day pillar itself: Friend over Eating God, same branch. Expect the pillar's habits at full volume, more projects and more travel.
- 2029 Gi-yu (己酉): Rob Wealth over Hurting Officer. Bold ideas and sharp words.
- 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌): Eating God over Friend. Productive, with allies.

FAQ
What does the Mu-sin (戊申) day pillar mean?
It is Yang Earth over the Metal Monkey, the 45th pillar of the cycle. It is read as a productive, skilled and mobile person with Eating God in the spouse palace.
Is the Sickness stage bad for Mu-sin?
No. Sickness is a technical name for a stage of lower force; here it reflects a Day Master that gives a lot through its Output. It suggests pacing, not illness.
Which stars does Mu-sin carry?
Academic Star and Hidden Pay, plus a listing among the Yin-Yang Mismatch pillars. Each is weighed against the whole chart.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Monkey branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Mu Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.

|---|---|---|---|
| 戊 Mu | Yang Earth | 7 days | Friend |
| 壬 Im | Yang Water | 7 days | Indirect Wealth |
| 庚 Gyeong | Yang Metal | 16 days | Eating God |
