Im-ja (壬子, 임자) is the 49th pair in the sixty-pillar cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja). As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju) it puts Im, Yang Water, on top of Ja, the Rat. Picture the open sea at midnight in the coldest month of the year: no coastline in sight, no moon on the surface, only a great weight of water moving under its own momentum. Both characters belong to Water, so nothing inside the pillar slows the current down.

The image

The branch Ja holds two hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan): Im for 10 days and Gye, Yin Water, for 20. Seen from an Im Day Master, the first is a Friend (비견 比肩, bigyeon) and the second, the main one, is Rob Wealth (겁재 劫財, geopjae). Both are peers, so the branch adds more of the self rather than something to feed, fight or obey.

On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Im on Ja stands at Emperor (제왕 帝旺, jewang), the summit of the cycle. Practitioners read this as stamina and self-reliance, with a condition: so strong a Day Master needs Earth for banks, Wood for an outlet or Fire to work with elsewhere in the chart.

Two named stars sit on this pillar. Sharp Edge (양인 羊刃, yangin) appears when a yang Day Master sits on its own peak branch, and it describes a cutting, decisive streak. Red Glamour (홍염 紅艶, hongyeom) is a star of personal attraction. The Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches for Im-ja are In (Tiger) and Myo (Rabbit), the Wood branches this water would naturally flow into.

Character

Im-ja people tend to think in private and act in one move. They can carry a plan for months without announcing it, then commit fully. They read a room or a market as a set of currents and are often right about where it is heading.

The Rob Wealth branch makes them quietly competitive. They measure themselves against siblings and colleagues and rarely ask for help. Sharp Edge sharpens this into a capacity for hard decisions that others avoid, which is useful in a crisis and abrasive in an ordinary week.

Blind spots follow from the strength. Im-ja can assume everyone else has the same energy and tolerance for risk. It may overcommit or let pride stop it from changing course. It helps to keep someone around who is allowed to say no.

Relationships

The day branch is traditionally the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung). For Im-ja it holds Rob Wealth, so the classic reading is a partner who is an equal: capable, independent and not easily managed. The traditional caution is rivalry, either between the partners or over shared money, and Red Glamour adds a magnetism that can draw attention from outside the couple.

Two traditional notes. Jeong-chuk (丁丑) is Im-ja's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap), since 丁 combines with 壬 and 丑 combines with 子. Mu-o (戊午) is its "heaven strikes, earth clashes" pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung), with 戊 controlling 壬 and 午 clashing with 子. These are patterns to notice when comparing two charts, not predictions about a couple.

Work and money

Strong Water with peers in the branch suits work where stamina and nerve count: trading, logistics, shipping, emergency response, negotiation, or running a team through a hard season.

Wealth for an Im Day Master is Fire, and none appears in this pillar, so money comes through effort and timing rather than steady drip. Rob Wealth also means money tends to move out through friends, partners and joint ventures. Written terms and separate accounts suit this pillar well.

How Im-ja differs from the other Im pillars

Its neighbours in the cycle are Sin-hae (辛亥) before it and Gye-chuk (癸丑) after it. The Im Day Master page covers the stem in general and the Rat page covers the branch.

FAQ

Is Im-ja a strong day pillar?

Im-ja is one of the strongest Water pillars because Im stands at the Emperor stage on Ja and both hidden stems are Water. How well it is used depends on the rest of the chart.

What does Rob Wealth in the Im-ja spouse palace mean?

It traditionally describes a partner who acts as an equal or peer. Classical texts add a caution about competition and shared money, a tendency rather than a fixed outcome.

What happens to Im-ja in 2026?

The 2026 Byeong-o year brings Wealth stars and a branch clash between 午 and the day branch 子. Traditional readings link that with change in money, home or relationships.

Hidden stems in the branch

The Rat branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Im Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
