Im-sin (壬申) Day Pillar: Yang Water Monkey and the Mountain Spring
Im-sin (壬申, 임신) is the ninth pillar in the sixty-pair cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja). It sets Im, Yang Water, on Sin, the Monkey, which is Yang Metal. The best image is the source of a great river: cold water breaking out of a rock face high in the mountains in early autumn, clear and quick, with the whole length of the river still ahead of it. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), Im-sin describes a Day Master that is fed by its own ground.
The image
Metal produces Water. The branch does not need to be controlled, fed or competed with; it supplies the stem. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of Sin show the detail. Mu, Yang Earth, holds 7 days and is Seven Killings for Im. Im itself holds 7 days as a Friend. Gyeong, Yang Metal, holds 16 days and is the main stem, so the branch's Ten God is Indirect Resource (편인 偏印, pyeonin).
Indirect Resource is unconventional learning: intuition, specialist knowledge, the side door into a subject rather than the textbook.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Im on Sin is at Long Life (장생 長生, jangsaeng), the birth of the force. Combined with Resource in the branch, this is a Day Master with dependable roots. It is a young, growing strength that keeps being replenished.
The engine marks Im-sin with the Hall of Learning (학당 學堂, hakdang), a star that falls where the Day Master meets its Long Life branch and is traditionally linked to scholarship and a good mind for study. The Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches for this pillar are Sul (Dog) and Hae (Pig).
Character
The striking trait of Im-sin is how fast it learns. The Monkey branch adds agility and curiosity, and Resource feeds the mind. Im-sin people often pick up languages, systems, instruments or technical fields with less effort than others, and then move on to the next one.
Indirect Resource makes that learning idiosyncratic. Im-sin often trusts its own method over the standard one, and it may know a great deal about unusual subjects. It tends to be observant and slightly detached, the person who watches a meeting before speaking.
Weak points grow from the same strength. Comfortable being supplied with information, Im-sin can keep studying instead of producing. Indirect Resource is also the Ten God classical texts associate with restraining the Eating God, so the practical risk is overthinking a piece of work until it never ships.
Relationships
With Indirect Resource in the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung), the traditional reading is a partner who supports, teaches or protects, often in an unconventional way. Im-sin may be drawn to someone older, more experienced or from a different background. The classic caution is that Resource in this seat can make the relationship feel like mentorship or caretaking, and Im-sin may need more personal space than a partner expects.
Traditional notes: Jeong-sa (丁巳) is the heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap) for Im-sin, with 丁 combining 壬 and 巳 combining 申. Mu-in (戊寅) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung), with 戊 controlling 壬 and 寅 clashing 申. They are used for chart comparison, not as relationship verdicts.
Work and money
Im-sin suits fields where a good mind is the product: engineering, research, data and software, medicine, translation, analysis, technical writing, specialist consulting. The Hall of Learning supports formal study, and Indirect Resource often leads to niche expertise that is hard to replace.
There is no Wealth star among Sin's hidden stems for Im, so money tends to come through qualifications and skills rather than trade. The risk is treating knowledge as its own reward and forgetting to charge for it.
How Im-sin differs from the other Im pillars
Im-sin is the "supported" Im. Compare:
- Im-in (壬寅), its clash branch, spends water on Wood at the Sickness stage. Im-sin receives; Im-in gives.
- Im-ja (壬子) is strong through peers at Emperor rather than through learning.
- Im-sul (壬戌) has Direct Resource hidden in its branch, but the main force there is Seven Killings, so its life is shaped more by pressure than by study.
- Im-jin (壬辰) also hides Water (Rob Wealth) and Seven Killings inside, yet it sits at Tomb with Goegang intensity.
In the cycle, Im-sin follows Sin-mi (辛未) and comes before Gye-yu (癸酉), the other Water-over-Metal pillar. Read more on the Im Day Master and the Monkey.
Im-sin in 2026–2030
The first two years tilt toward Wealth: 2026 Byeong-o (丙午) brings Indirect Wealth over Direct Wealth, and 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) brings Direct Wealth over Direct Officer with a stem combination between 丁 and 壬. 2028 Mu-sin (戊申) is Seven Killings over Indirect Resource and repeats the same branch as the day branch, 申, so the pillar's own Resource theme doubles under pressure. 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) gives Direct Officer over Direct Resource, a good fit for exams and credentials. 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌) pairs Indirect Resource with Seven Killings. The day pillar calculator shows these against your whole chart.

Traditionally yes. The branch is Indirect Resource and the pillar carries the Hall of Learning star, both linked to learning and specialist knowledge.
Who is Im-sin traditionally compatible with?
