Im-in (壬寅) Day Pillar: The River That Feeds the Forest
A spring river running hard through a forest gorge at dawn: that is the usual picture of Im-in (壬寅, 임인). The pillar places Im, Yang Water, over In, the Tiger, and it is the 39th of the sixty pairs in the cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja). Nearly all the water is being drunk by the trees on the banks. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), it describes a person whose energy goes straight into making and growing things.
The image
Water nourishes Wood, so here the Day Master feeds its own seat. The branch In carries three hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan). Mu, Yang Earth, holds 7 days and is Seven Killings for Im. Byeong, Yang Fire, holds 7 days and is Indirect Wealth. Gap, Yang Wood, holds 16 days and is the main stem, the Eating God (식신 食神, siksin). Eating God is the Ten God of natural output: talent, appetite, teaching, cooking, craft, the pleasure of doing a thing well.
So the branch is mainly output, with a little money and a little pressure folded inside. Classical writers like this mix, since Eating God attracts Wealth and restrains Seven Killings.
The life stage tells the other half. Im on In is at Sickness (병 病, byeong), the phase after Decline when the force is thinning. The river is giving more than it keeps. Readers look for Metal or more Water elsewhere in the chart to keep the flow up.
Two stars sit on Im-in. The Academic Star (문창 文昌, munchang) points to a feel for language, study and clear explanation. Hidden Pay (암록 暗祿, amnok) is read as quiet, unadvertised support that tends to appear when needed. The Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are Jin (Dragon) and Sa (Snake).
Character
- Generous with output. Im-in shares ideas, skills and food freely, and often teaches without being asked.
- Optimistic and quick. The Tiger branch adds courage and a liking for beginnings. Im-in will start the project, open the shop or sign up for the course.
- Clear communicator. With the Academic Star, explanation comes easily, in writing or speech.
- Blind spot: running dry. At the Sickness stage, this pillar can give until it is empty, then withdraw abruptly. Rest has to be scheduled.
- Blind spot: follow-through. Administration and the boring last tenth of a job can slide.
Relationships
The day branch is the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung), and for Im-in it holds Eating God. Traditionally this describes a warm, easy home life and a partner who is cared for and fed, sometimes literally. For a woman's chart, some schools also read Eating God in this seat as a strong focus on children. The caution is imbalance: when one person always gives and the other always receives, resentment builds quietly.
Two traditional notes. Jeong-hae (丁亥) is Im-in's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 丁 combines with 壬 and 亥 combines with 寅. Mu-sin (戊申) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 戊 controls 壬 while 申 clashes with 寅. Both are notes for chart comparison.
Work and money
Im-in suits fields where output is visible and shared: teaching, writing, content, product design, food, training, early-stage ventures. It often works best where it can make something and see people use it.
Money tends to follow the work. Indirect Wealth inside the branch means irregular or project-based income is common, and Hidden Pay hints at help from unexpected quarters. The practical risk is underpricing, because Im-in enjoys the work enough to do it cheaply.
How Im-in differs from the other Im pillars
Im-ja (壬子) is Water on Water at the Emperor stage: self-contained where Im-in pours itself out. Im-sin (壬申) is the clash branch of Im-in and its mirror: Indirect Resource feeds the Day Master at Long Life, so Im-sin absorbs where Im-in produces. Im-jin (壬辰) keeps its water in a storehouse at the Tomb stage and carries Goegang, which makes it far more guarded. Im-o (壬午) turns toward Wealth and partnership rather than craft.
In the cycle, Im-in follows Sin-chuk (辛丑) and comes before Gye-myo (癸卯), another Water-over-Wood pillar. For background on the stem see the Im Day Master; for the branch, the Tiger.
Im-in in 2026–2030
2026 (Byeong-o, 丙午) brings Indirect Wealth over Direct Wealth: a money-heavy year that rewards selling what Im-in makes. 2027 (Jeong-mi, 丁未) is Direct Wealth over Direct Officer, and 丁 forms a stem combination with 壬, often read as commitments and agreements. 2028 (Mu-sin, 戊申) is the notable one: Seven Killings over Indirect Resource, and 申 clashes with the day branch 寅. Since Mu-sin is also this pillar's 천극지충 partner, traditional readers watch it for pressure on work, home and routine. 2029 (Gi-yu, 己酉) gives Direct Officer over Direct Resource, steadier and more supportive. 2030 (Gyeong-sul, 庚戌) pairs Indirect Resource with Seven Killings. FAQ
What is the Im-in day pillar like?
Im-in is Yang Water feeding Yang Wood, with Eating God as its main hidden Ten God. It tends toward generous, creative, communicative people who need to manage their energy.
Why is Im-in at the Sickness stage?
In the twelve life stages, Im (Yang Water) reaches Sickness on the In branch. It means the Day Master draws little strength from its own seat, so the rest of the chart matters more.
Is 2028 a difficult year for Im-in?
2028 is a Mu-sin year, which clashes with the In day branch and brings Seven Killings. Traditional readings expect pressure and change, but how it plays out depends on the full chart and luck pillar.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Tiger branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Im Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
| Hidden stem | Element | Share of the month | Ten God |
|---|---|---|---|
| 戊 Mu | Yang Earth | 7 days | Seven Killings |
| 丙 Byeong | Yang Fire | 7 days | Indirect Wealth |
| 甲 Gap | Yang Wood | 16 days | Eating God |
