Im (壬) Yang Water Day Master: Ocean Personality, Career and Love
Im (壬) is the Yang Water Day Master, the ninth Heavenly Stem in Korean Saju. Its image is the ocean or a great river: vast, deep, always moving and capable of carrying enormous loads. When 壬 tops the day pillar, the chart points to a broad-minded, restless, resourceful person who thinks in currents rather than fixed positions.
Core nature
A great river rarely flows in a straight line. It finds the low ground, swells in the rainy season, carves canyons over centuries and carries trade from one city to the next. Im people often show the same mix of flexibility and power. They pick up new ideas quickly, adapt their route without losing their destination and tend to see how separate pieces connect.
Water is the element of intelligence, communication and what classical texts associate with wisdom. Yang gives it volume and momentum. Im is often curious about everything, sociable in a loose, wide-ranging way and comfortable with ambiguity that would bother more structured stems.
The image also carries a warning. A river without banks becomes a flood. Im's energy needs direction and containment, or it spreads into too many plans and commitments at once.
The Day Master is one part of eight characters, and the rest of the chart can dam, feed or redirect this water. The Day Master guide explains how.
Strengths
- Breadth. Im takes in a wide range of information and connects it, which makes for good strategists and generalists.
- Adaptability. Obstacles are routed around, not argued with.
- Endurance. Rivers keep moving. Im can keep a long project or difficult period going without dramatic shows of effort.
- Generosity of scale. Im people often think big on behalf of others, opening doors and introducing people.
Blind spots
- Lack of banks. Without structure, Im can scatter its energy or drift between goals.
- Restlessness. Routine and confinement can feel suffocating, leading to sudden changes of job, place or plan.
- Hidden depths. Oceans are opaque. Im may keep its real feelings far below the surface, even from close people.
- Overflow. When stressed, Im can overwhelm others with intensity, plans or emotion.
Relationships
Im is often easygoing, broad-minded and fun to be around as a partner, with a strong need for freedom. They tend to give partners space and expect the same, and they can be surprisingly protective once deeply attached.
Im's stem combination partner is Jeong (丁), Yin Fire: a lamp reflected on dark water. Classical texts give 丁壬 a name usually softened as the "affectionate" or romantic combination, and it is said to transform toward Wood. For Im, Jeong is Direct Wealth, so the traditional image is of a warm, focused partner who draws this wide-ranging water toward one place. Treat it as one pull among many; the full charts decide compatibility. The Jeong Yin Fire page shows the other side.
Im's sibling is Gye Yin Water, the rain and mist to Im's ocean. To Im, Gye reads as Rob Wealth.
Work and money
The Ten Gods for Im:
- Wealth is Fire. Byeong (丙) is Indirect Wealth and Jeong (丁) is Direct Wealth. Water regulates fire, and Im often earns through large flows: trade, logistics, networks, investments that move.
- Officer is Earth. Mu (戊) is Seven Killings and Gi (己) is Direct Officer. Earth is the riverbank and the dam. Rules and authority can feel confining, yet they are exactly what turns Im's force into usable power, provided the chart is strong enough.
- Resource is Metal. Gyeong (庚) is Indirect Resource and Sin (辛) is Direct Resource. Springs rise from rock; learning, mentors and good tools replenish Im.
- Output is Wood. Gap (甲) is Eating God and Eul (乙) is Hurting Officer. Water grows forests, and Im's output is ideas, teaching and ventures that take root.
Im often suits roles with range and movement: international business, shipping and logistics, strategy, media, travel, research, entrepreneurship. Desk jobs with narrow scope and no room to explore tend to sap them.
What supports and drains this Day Master
Under the Five Elements, Metal produces Water and fellow Water adds volume, so both strengthen Im. Wood draws water up as output, Fire takes effort to manage, and Earth dams and controls it.
Chart strength changes everything. An Im born in winter with Water and Metal on every side is a river in flood: Earth to give it banks and Wood to channel it into growth are the help it needs. An Im born in summer, with Fire and Earth heavy in the chart, is a river in drought, and Metal and Water become precious.
