Spring drizzle falling on new grass in March: Gye-myo (癸卯, 계묘) is often described with that image. It is the 40th pillar of the sixty-pair cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja), placing Gye, Yin Water, on Myo, the Rabbit, which is pure Yin Wood. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), it is one of the gentlest and most productive in the cycle.

The image

Water feeds Wood, so the Day Master nourishes its own seat. Myo holds two hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan). Gap, Yang Wood, holds 10 days and is Hurting Officer for Gye. Eul, Yin Wood, holds 20 days and is the main stem, the Eating God (식신 食神, siksin). Eating God is the Ten God of easy output: skill, enjoyment, care, the work one would do even unpaid. Hurting Officer adds sharper, more critical expression.

The life stage is the surprise. Gye on Myo is at Long Life (장생 長生, jangsaeng), the birth of the force, in the reverse-counted stages that most Korean practitioners use for yin stems. Normally feeding Wood would drain Water, but at Long Life the Day Master is renewing itself even as it gives. This reading depends on the school; those who give yin stems the same stages as yang stems would put Gye elsewhere, which is one reason readers weigh the whole chart.

Stars on this pillar

Gye-myo carries an unusually bright cluster:

Stars add flavour to a chart rather than decide it. Still, three on the day pillar give Gye-myo a reputation for luck with teachers and education.

Character

Gye-myo tends to be kind, observant and quietly talented. It notices what people need and supplies it without fuss.

There is a delicate side. Both characters are yin, so Gye-myo can be sensitive to atmosphere, slow to confront and easily worn out by harsh environments. Hurting Officer hidden inside gives it a critical eye that it may voice indirectly, through a well-placed remark rather than an argument.

Its blind spot is under-asserting. Gye-myo can give its best work away, defer to louder people and let others take credit. It benefits from deadlines, contracts and allies who speak up for it.

Relationships

Eating God in the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) is traditionally a warm, easy sign: a comfortable home, affection shown through care, and a partner who is looked after. Gye-myo tends to nurture. In a woman's chart, some schools also read this as close attention to children. The caution is the Hurting Officer stem: when unhappy, Gye-myo may become critical of a partner rather than state its own needs.

Traditional notes: Mu-sul (戊戌) forms Gye-myo's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap), as 戊 combines 癸 and 戌 combines 卯. Gi-yu (己酉) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung), as 己 controls 癸 and 酉 clashes 卯. Both are classical notes for comparing charts.

Work and money

Teaching, writing, editing, design, nursing and care professions, counselling, food, botany and horticulture, early-childhood work, and patient research all suit Gye-myo. The learning stars support academic paths.

Myo holds no Wealth star for Gye, so money comes from the work itself and from people who value it. Eating God tends to attract Wealth over time, provided Gye-myo sets a price and keeps to it.

How Gye-myo differs from the other Gye pillars

Gye-yu (癸酉) sits on its opposite branch and receives Indirect Resource at Sickness, so it is introspective where Gye-myo is expressive. Gye-sa (癸巳) also has Heavenly Noble but sits on Direct Wealth at Conception, giving it a more practical, money-minded turn. Gye-chuk (癸丑) is pressed by Seven Killings and carries White Tiger and Sharp Edge, which makes it much tougher. Gye-hae (癸亥) holds a small Hurting Officer too, but its main force is Rob Wealth at Emperor.

Gye-myo follows Im-in (壬寅) and precedes Gap-jin (甲辰). For the stem and branch separately, see the Gye Day Master and the Rabbit. Its Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are Jin (Dragon) and Sa (Snake).

FAQ

Why is Gye-myo considered a lucky day pillar?

Gye-myo carries Heavenly Noble, Academic Star and Hall of Learning together, and Gye stands at Long Life on Myo. Traditional readers see that as a well-supported, talented pillar, though the full chart still decides.

What is the main Ten God in the Gye-myo branch?

It is Eating God, from the Eul (乙) hidden stem. A smaller Gap (甲) stem adds Hurting Officer.

Which year is hardest for Gye-myo in 2026 to 2030?

The 2029 Gi-yu year brings Seven Killings and a clash with the Myo branch. It is a traditional time for pressure and change, not a predicted misfortune.

Hidden stems in the branch

The Rabbit branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gye Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
