Gye-chuk (癸丑) Day Pillar: Yin Water Ox, Frost on Winter Earth
Gye-chuk (癸丑, 계축) is the 50th pillar in the sixty-pair cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja), with Gye, Yin Water, resting on Chuk, the Ox. Chuk is the earth of the coldest weeks, around January: wet, frozen and dark. Gye is rain, mist and dew. Together they make frost on a ploughed field before dawn, or sleet settling into frozen soil. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), Gye-chuk is quiet, enduring and harder than it looks.
The image
Earth controls Water, so the branch is a controller. Yet Chuk is wet earth that holds water rather than blocking it, and its hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) include Water. Gye holds 9 days as a Friend. Sin, Yin Metal, holds 3 days as Indirect Resource. Gi, Yin Earth, holds 18 days and is the main stem; for a Gye Day Master that is Seven Killings (칠살 七殺, chilsal), the Ten God of pressure, risk and hard authority.
So the seat combines a peer, a source of support and a strong controller. The small Metal stem matters, because Resource turns the pressure of Seven Killings into usable strength.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gye on Chuk is at Cap & Sash (관대 冠帶, gwandae), the young adult stepping into public life. Schools differ on how to count stages for yin stems. The method this engine uses runs yin stems in reverse, which places Gye at Cap & Sash here.
Character
Gye-chuk is persistent in a way that is easy to miss. It works steadily, keeps its own counsel and rarely shows how much effort it is making.
Three stars sit here, and they sharpen the picture:
- Sharp Edge (양인 羊刃, yangin) is traditionally a yang-stem star. Some schools give yin stems no Sharp Edge at all, while others, including the method used here, place Gye's on Chuk. Read it as a capacity for decisive, even ruthless action when pushed.
- White Tiger (백호 白虎, baekho) adds intensity. Older texts linked it to sudden accidents; most current readers treat it as forceful energy that needs a demanding outlet.
- Hidden Pay (암록 暗祿, amnok) suggests unseen help and resources that turn up in lean times.
The blind spot is stoicism carried too far. Gye-chuk may endure a bad situation for years when it could have left, and it can keep resentments as quietly as it keeps everything else. When the frost finally cracks, people around it are often surprised.
Relationships
With Seven Killings in the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung), the traditional reading is a partner with force: ambitious, demanding, possibly difficult, or a relationship that tests both people. In a woman's chart Seven Killings is also a classical husband star. The Friend and Resource stems in the same branch add companionship and support.
Traditional notes: Mu-ja (戊子) is the heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap) for Gye-chuk, since 戊 combines with 癸 and 子 combines with 丑. Gi-mi (己未) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 己 controls 癸 and 未 clashes with 丑. These are compatibility markers in the classical literature, not forecasts.
Work and money
Gye-chuk often excels in jobs that need endurance and discretion: auditing, investigation, research, medicine, agriculture and food systems, infrastructure, security, or long-horizon finance.
No Wealth star appears among Chuk's hidden stems for Gye, so money usually builds slowly through persistence and position. The Ox is a storehouse (고 庫, go) branch, and Gye-chuk tends to save and keep.
How Gye-chuk differs from the other Gye pillars
- Gye-mi (癸未) sits on its clash branch and is its summer twin: also Seven Killings Earth, but hot and dry at the Tomb stage, so Gye-mi works under heat where Gye-chuk works under frost.
- Gye-hae (癸亥) is Water on Water at Emperor, with no controller as its main force.
- Gye-myo (癸卯) is gentle and productive, with Eating God in the branch at Long Life and a cluster of learning stars.
- Gye-yu (癸酉) is fed by Resource instead of pressed by Seven Killings.
Gye-chuk follows Im-ja (壬子) and comes before Gap-in (甲寅). The Gye Day Master page and the Ox page cover stem and branch separately. Its Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are In (Tiger) and Myo (Rabbit).
Gye-chuk in 2026–2030
2026, the Byeong-o (丙午) year, puts Direct Wealth over Indirect Wealth: a year of earning and spending. 2027, Jeong-mi (丁未), is the year to watch, with Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings and 未 clashing the day branch 丑. A clash of two storehouse branches is traditionally read as something long kept being opened, at home or at work. 2028, Mu-sin (戊申), brings Direct Officer over Direct Resource and a stem combination between 戊 and the Day Master 癸, a traditional sign of commitments and formal roles. 2029, Gi-yu (己酉), is Seven Killings over Indirect Resource. 2030, Gyeong-sul (庚戌), gives Direct Resource over Direct Officer. FAQ
Does Gye-chuk have Sharp Edge?
The engine marks Gye-chuk with Sharp Edge, following the school that assigns yin stems their own Sharp Edge branch. Other schools reserve Sharp Edge for yang stems only.
What Ten God sits in the Gye-chuk spouse palace?
The main hidden stem of Chuk is Gi, which is Seven Killings for a Gye Day Master. It traditionally describes a strong-willed partner or a demanding relationship.
Which year clashes with Gye-chuk between 2026 and 2030?
The 2027 Jeong-mi year clashes with the Chuk day branch. Traditional readings link that to change and reorganisation rather than to any fixed event.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Ox branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gye Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
| Hidden stem | Element | Share of the month | Ten God |
|---|---|---|---|
| 癸 Gye | Yin Water | 9 days | Friend |
| 辛 Sin | Yin Metal | 3 days | Indirect Resource |
| 己 Gi | Yin Earth | 18 days | Seven Killings |
