Hall of Learning (학당귀인): Saju's Scholar Star Explained
The Hall of Learning (학당귀인 學堂貴人 hakdang gwiin) is a noble star associated with patient study, teaching and the respect that grows from knowledge. It is found from your Day Master, and it sits on the branch where that stem is "born" in the cycle of life stages. Readers treat it as a sign of a mind that keeps learning over a long time.
What it means
學堂 means a schoolhouse. In older Korean and Chinese usage the star describes someone who belongs in the classroom, either as a diligent student or as a teacher others listen to. Traditional notes praise dignity, good manners and a reputation for knowing what one is talking about.
Its flavor differs from the Academic Star. That star leans toward quick wit and written expression, while the Hall of Learning leans toward depth, patience and mastery. A modern reader might connect it with professions that reward accumulated knowledge, such as research, medicine, law, teaching or skilled craft. It points to inclination, not to a set career.
How it is found
Each Day Master has one Hall of Learning branch, and the star is present wherever that branch appears among your four branches. The rule has a neat logic: the branch is the Day Master's Long Life stage, the first stage of the twelve life stages, where a stem's energy is newly born. That is why tradition reads it as the place where learning begins and keeps growing.
Worked example: a Gap Yang Wood Day Master is born in Hae 亥 (Pig), so the Hall of Learning branch is Hae. A Gap Day Master born in a Pig year therefore has the star in the year pillar, and one born in a Pig month has it in the month pillar. The day pillar Gap-sul (甲戌) does not carry it on the day branch, but a Gap-sul person with a Pig hour does. Other pairs: Byeong 丙 and Mu 戊 take In 寅 (Tiger), Gyeong 庚 takes Sa 巳 (Snake), Im 壬 takes Sin 申 (Monkey), and Gye 癸 takes Myo 卯 (Rabbit).
For the Yin stems the life stages run in reverse, which gives Eul 乙 the Horse, Jeong 丁 and Gi 己 the Rooster, and Sin 辛 the Rat. Schools that do not reverse the Yin stages produce a different table; Orienteller uses the reversed version shown on this page.
How it shows up in a reading
The pillar holding the branch adds texture. In the month pillar, which governs your working environment, readers tie it to careers built on expertise. In the day branch it is often read as a thoughtful, well-read partner, or as learning being central to your own identity. In the hour pillar it suggests a late-blooming interest in study, or a life that ends up involving teaching.
Interactions change the tone. If the Hall of Learning branch is clashed, for example Hae 亥 by Sa 巳, studies are often described as interrupted or redirected. If it combines harmoniously with a neighboring branch, the knowledge is said to find practical use. Readers also check the Ten Gods: the Hall of Learning means more when Resource stars, which govern learning and support, are healthy in the chart.
Luck pillars can bring the branch for a decade or a year, which readers describe as a good window for training or qualifications; the luck pillars guide explains how those are timed. Find your branches with the free day pillar calculator, and see related terms in the Saju glossary.
FAQ
What does 학당귀인 mean?
It is a noble star that tradition links to diligent study, teaching and respect earned through knowledge. It describes an inclination toward learning.
Is the Hall of Learning the same as the Long Life stage?
In Orienteller's table, yes: the Hall of Learning branch is the Day Master's Long Life stage. The star is the noble-star name for that placement.
Do I need the Hall of Learning to be good at school?
No. Many strong students have no noble learning stars. Resource and Eating God strength, along with effort, matter more than this one placement.
