On a clear October morning, dew beads on an iron gate before the sun is up. Gye-yu (癸酉, 계유) has that image: Gye, Yin Water, condensing on Yu, the Rooster, which is pure Yin Metal. It is the 10th pillar of the sixty-pair cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja) and the last of the first decade, which begins with Gap-ja. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), Gye-yu is clean, precise and somewhat solitary, the water that forms quietly out of cold air.

Metal produces Water, so the branch feeds the stem. Yu contains two hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan), both Metal. Gyeong, Yang Metal, holds 10 days and is Direct Resource for Gye. Sin, Yin Metal, holds 20 days and is the main stem, making the branch Indirect Resource (편인 偏印, pyeonin). With no Wealth, Officer or output stem in the branch, the seat is pure support.

Indirect Resource is the Ten God of unconventional knowledge: intuition, specialist skill, research, spiritual or technical interests, and learning by one's own route. Classical writers also linked it with solitude and with an uneasy relationship to ordinary routines.

The life stage looks contradictory. Gye on Yu is at Sickness (병 病, byeong) in the reverse counting used for yin stems, a phase where the force thins out. Yet the branch is entirely Resource. Most readers reconcile this by saying the Day Master is supported from outside rather than strong in itself: well supplied, not robust. Schools that count yin stems like yang stems would place Gye differently, so this is one of the places where readings vary.

Gye-yu carries no special named stars. Its Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are Sul (Dog) and Hae (Pig).

Character

Gye-yu tends to be sharp, discerning and a little reserved. It notices flaws and inconsistencies quickly, prefers quality to quantity and often has exacting taste. The Rooster branch adds neatness and a liking for precise standards.

Its mind runs on Indirect Resource: it learns by digging, likes to understand systems from the inside and may hold unusual beliefs or interests.

The blind spots are typical of heavy Resource. Gye-yu can think instead of act, and it can be hard to satisfy, including with itself. Indirect Resource is classically said to restrain the Eating God, which in daily terms means it may criticise its own output until it stops producing. It also tends toward isolation when stressed.

Relationships

Indirect Resource in the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) traditionally suggests a partner who supports or teaches, possibly with an unusual background or way of life. Gye-yu often looks for a partner who understands its need for privacy and intellectual space. The classical caution is distance: Resource in this seat can make the relationship more about care and duty than about play, and Gye-yu may withdraw when it should talk.

Traditional notes: Mu-jin (戊辰) is the heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap) for Gye-yu, as 戊 combines with 癸 and 辰 combines with 酉. Gi-myo (己卯) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung), as 己 controls 癸 and 卯 clashes with 酉. These describe classical chemistry between pillars and nothing more definite.

Work and money

Research and analysis, laboratory science, medicine and pharmacy, quality control, editing, law, software, finance auditing, and craft trades that demand precision all suit Gye-yu. It often does best as the specialist whose judgement others rely on.

With no Wealth star in the branch, income usually comes from expertise and credentials. Gye-yu may undervalue the market side of its work; partnering with someone commercially minded often helps.

How Gye-yu differs from the other Gye pillars

Gye-myo (癸卯) sits on its clash branch and points the other way: Eating God output at Long Life, warm and expressive, where Gye-yu is inward and exacting. Gye-chuk (癸丑) holds a little Indirect Resource too, but its main force is Seven Killings, and it carries White Tiger and Sharp Edge. Gye-sa (癸巳) has Direct Resource hidden but lives mainly through Direct Wealth. Gye-hae (癸亥) is strong through peers rather than through Resource.

Gye-yu follows Im-sin (壬申), another Water-over-Metal pillar, and precedes Gap-sul (甲戌). The Gye Day Master and Rooster pages describe the stem and branch on their own.

FAQ

What is the Gye-yu day pillar like?

Gye-yu is Yin Water fed by Yin Metal, with Indirect Resource as the branch's main Ten God. It is traditionally read as precise, perceptive and independent-minded.

Why is Gye-yu at the Sickness stage if Metal supports it?

The life stage measures the Day Master's own phase on the branch, while the Ten God shows what the branch supplies. Gye-yu is at Sickness yet well supplied, so readers call it supported rather than strong.

What does 2029 mean for Gye-yu?

2029 is the Gi-yu year, which repeats the Yu day branch and brings Seven Killings on the stem. Traditional readings expect familiar themes to intensify.

Hidden stems in the branch

The Rooster branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gye Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
