Heavenly Noble (천을귀인) in Saju: Meaning and How to Find It
The Heavenly Noble (천을귀인 天乙貴人 cheoneul gwiin) is the most widely cited helper star in Korean Saju. It is a branch that, for your particular Day Master, traditionally marks the arrival of support from other people: a mentor, a patron or simply someone who turns up at the right moment. Many readers treat it as the first "noble" (귀인 gwiin) to look for in any chart.
What it means
Classical texts describe the Heavenly Noble as the highest of the noble stars, the one that "turns misfortune into fortune." The old image is of an official who intervenes on your behalf. In a modern reading the idea is less magical and more social: a person with this star tends to attract help, or tends to be the kind of person others want to help, because of how they carry themselves and whom they meet.
It is a tendency, not a guarantee. A chart with two Heavenly Nobles can still go through hard years, and a chart with none can be full of good relationships.
How it is found
The Heavenly Noble is read from your Day Master, the stem of your day pillar. Each Day Master has two noble branches, and the star is present if either of those branches appears anywhere among the four branches of your chart: year, month, day or hour.
The pairs follow an old mnemonic. Gap 甲, Mu 戊 and Gyeong 庚 share Chuk 丑 (Ox) and Mi 未 (Goat). Eul 乙 and Gi 己 share Ja 子 (Rat) and Sin 申 (Monkey). Byeong 丙 and Jeong 丁 share Hae 亥 (Pig) and Yu 酉 (Rooster). Im 壬 and Gye 癸 share Myo 卯 (Rabbit) and Sa 巳 (Snake). Sin 辛 stands alone with O 午 (Horse) and In 寅 (Tiger).
Worked example: a Byeong Yang Fire Day Master looks for Hae 亥 or Yu 酉. If the month branch is Yu 酉, the chart has a Heavenly Noble in the month pillar. Schools disagree on a few stems; some older manuals give Gyeong the Horse and Tiger pair instead of Ox and Goat. Orienteller follows the table shown on this page.
How it shows up in a reading
Position shapes the story. A noble in the year pillar is usually read as help from family background or early circles; in the month pillar, from teachers, seniors and the workplace; in the day branch, from a spouse or close partner; in the hour pillar, from juniors, children or later life.
Interactions matter too. If the noble branch is clashed by another branch (for example Yu 酉 clashed by Myo 卯), readers describe the help as arriving late or being harder to hold on to. If it sits in a harmony, the support is read as steadier. A noble that falls on a Void branch for your day pillar (see Void) is often described as weaker.
The star is only one layer; the Ten Gods and the Five Elements carry most of the weight. Related helper stars include the Heaven Virtue, Moon Virtue and Academic Star. FAQ
Is having 천을귀인 in my Saju a good sign?
Yes, it is traditionally one of the most favorable stars, linked to receiving help when it is needed. It describes a tendency toward support, not protection from every difficulty.
What if I have no Heavenly Noble in my chart?
Many charts have none, and it does not mean you will lack help. Luck pillars and annual pillars can bring a noble branch for a period, and the rest of the chart matters far more than any single star.
Can I have more than one Heavenly Noble?
Yes. If both noble branches appear, or one branch appears twice, the star is counted in each pillar where it sits. Readers usually read several as stronger social support, though not as a multiplier of good fortune.
