Gi-myo (己卯) Day Pillar: Yin Earth Rabbit and the Spring Garden Bed
Gi-myo (己卯) is the 16th pillar of the sixty-pair cycle. Gi (己) Yin Earth, the soil of a garden, sits on Myo (卯), the Wood branch of the Rabbit in mid-spring. The image is a garden bed in April, so full of new shoots and roots that you can hardly see the soil. The earth is doing its job, feeding growth, and that same growth is pressing into it from every side.

Wood controls Earth. For the Gi Day Master, Wood is the Officer family of the Ten Gods: structure, expectations, authority and the pressure others place on you. Myo is pure Wood, and its two hidden stems (지장간, 支藏干, jijanggan) are both Officer stars:
- Gap (甲) Yang Wood, 10 days: Direct Officer (정관, 正官, jeonggwan), fair rules, reputation, the proper way.
- Eul (乙) Yin Wood, 20 days: Seven Killings (편관, 偏官, pyeongwan), sharper pressure, challenge and urgency.
Eul is the main stem, so the branch's Ten God is Seven Killings. There is no Earth or Fire inside the Rabbit to support the Day Master.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성, 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gi on Myo is at Sickness (병, 病, byeong) in Orienteller's engine, which uses the Fire track for Earth and reverse counting for yin stems. The label means lowered vitality on its own seat, consistent with soil supporting more roots than it can easily feed. Schools that do not run yin stages in reverse would describe Gi on Myo differently, but the element picture, Wood pressing on Earth, holds either way.
Character
People with Gi-myo tend to be perceptive, adaptable and sensitive to what others expect of them. Living with Seven Killings in the seat teaches early awareness of rules, moods and hierarchies. Many Gi-myo people become excellent at reading a room and quietly meeting its needs.
That skill has a cost. A garden bed can be overplanted. Gi-myo is the Gi pillar most likely to over-accommodate, saying yes to pressure from bosses, family or partners because pushing back feels unsafe. It is also, when it decides to, capable of surprising firmness; Seven Killings is a warrior star as well as a pressure star.
Strengths often seen here: diplomacy, careful judgement of people, endurance under demanding conditions, gentleness that still gets results. Blind spots: anxiety about approval, difficulty claiming credit, and fatigue from constant adjustment.
A chart with Fire, especially, changes Gi-myo a great deal. Fire turns Wood's pressure into Resource that feeds Earth, so classical readers look first for 丙 or 丁 elsewhere.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁, 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Seven Killings. For a woman this is a classical husband star; for anyone it suggests attraction to strong, driven or demanding partners. Relationships may feel intense and growth-provoking. The traditional advice is balance: Gi-myo does best with a partner whose strength protects rather than overrides.
Classical chemistry notes: Gap-sul (甲戌) is the heaven-and-earth combination (천지합, 天地合, cheonji-hap), with 己 combining 甲 and 卯 combining 戌. Eul-yu (乙酉) is the heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충, 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung). Neither label predicts how a real relationship goes.
The Void branches (공망, 空亡, gongmang) are Sin (申) Monkey and Yu (酉) Rooster, both Metal, which is Gi's Output; some readers link that to under-recognised effort. See Void.
Work and money
Officer-heavy pillars suit organisations with clear structure: public service, education administration, healthcare, compliance, HR, hospitality management, horticulture and landscape work, and any role that serves many stakeholders. Gi-myo is often trusted precisely because it does not grab the spotlight.
Money is not in the branch itself, so income tends to follow position and title. Negotiating pay explicitly matters more for Gi-myo than for most; it is inclined to wait to be noticed.
How Gi-myo differs from the other Gi pillars
- Gi-yu (己酉) is its branch-clash opposite: Metal Output at Long Life with several study stars. Gi-yu expresses and critiques; Gi-myo absorbs and accommodates.
- Gi-sa (己巳) has the Fire that Gi-myo lacks, sitting at Emperor on Direct Resource.
- Gi-hae (己亥) also holds Direct Officer inside, but its main stem is Wealth, so it reads as practical rather than pressured.
- Gi-chuk (己丑) stands on its own Earth as Friend and leans on itself rather than others.
Neighbours in the cycle are Mu-in (戊寅), which also carries Seven Killings in its branch, and Gyeong-jin (庚辰). For the stem see Gi Yin Earth; for the branch the Rabbit page.

FAQ
What does the Gi-myo (己卯) day pillar mean?
It is Yin Earth over the Wood Rabbit, the 16th pillar of the cycle. It is read as perceptive and adaptable, with Seven Killings in the spouse palace.
Is Gi-myo a weak day pillar?
On its own seat it is at the Sickness stage with no Earth support in the branch. Overall strength depends on the month and other pillars, especially any Fire.
What happens for Gi-myo in 2029 and 2030?
2029 Gi-yu brings a branch clash to the day branch, and 2030 Gyeong-sul brings a branch harmony. Traditionally that reads as a change followed by a new alignment.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Rabbit branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gi Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
| Hidden stem | Element | Share of the month | Ten God |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 Gap | Yang Wood | 10 days | Direct Officer |
| 乙 Eul | Yin Wood | 20 days | Seven Killings |
