Gye-hae (癸亥) Day Pillar: The Last of the Sixty, Yin Water Pig
Gye-hae (癸亥, 계해) is the 60th and final pillar of the sixty-pair cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja). After it, the count returns to Gap-ja and starts again. Gye, Yin Water, sits on Hae, the Pig, which is Yang Water. The image is rain falling on the open sea at night in early winter: water joining water, with no edge between sky and sea. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), Gye-hae is deep, wide and hard to read from the surface.

Stem and branch share the same element, so the branch reinforces the Day Master. Hae holds three hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan). Mu, Yang Earth, holds 7 days and is Direct Officer for Gye. Gap, Yang Wood, holds 7 days and is Hurting Officer. Im, Yang Water, holds 16 days and is the main stem, making the branch Rob Wealth (겁재 劫財, geopjae). Rob Wealth is the peer of opposite polarity: an ally in strength and a competitor for resources.
The two smaller stems make Hae more complex than Ja. Direct Officer is rule and responsibility; Hurting Officer is the critic who breaks rules. Classical texts read the pairing as a tension between conforming and rebelling.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gye on Hae is at Emperor (제왕 帝旺, jewang) in the reverse counting used for yin stems, the peak of strength. Schools that count yin stems like yang stems would put Gye's peak in Ja instead; on this engine's method, Gye-hae is the strongest Gye pillar. It needs outlets: Wood, Fire or Earth.
Gye-hae carries the Yin-Yang Mismatch star (음양차착 陰陽差錯, eumyang chachak), traditionally read in connection with family expectations in marriage and especially relations with in-laws. Its Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are Ja (Rat) and Chuk (Ox).
Character
Gye-hae tends to be intuitive, imaginative and absorbent. It picks up moods, ideas and information from everywhere and blends them. Many have a rich inner life and an interest in philosophy, the arts or anything with hidden layers.
Being at the end of the cycle gives the pillar a reputation, in Korean folk reading, for being old-souled: tolerant, hard to shock and inclined to see the long view.
The blind spots belong to water with no banks. Gye-hae can drift, take on everyone's feelings, or let plans dissolve into possibilities. Rob Wealth may make money and boundaries leaky, especially with friends. The Hurting Officer stem can surface as sudden sharp comments that do not match the usual calm.
Relationships
Rob Wealth in the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) traditionally indicates a partner who is a peer: independent, strong-willed and on equal footing. The relationship works when both keep their own ground. The classical cautions are competition between partners, money that blurs between two people, and a third party; modern readers take these as areas to handle with clear agreements rather than as forecasts. The Yin-Yang Mismatch star adds a reminder to talk about extended family early.
Traditional notes: Mu-in (戊寅) forms Gye-hae's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 戊 combines 癸 and 寅 combines 亥. Gi-sa (己巳) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 己 controls 癸 and 巳 clashes 亥. Both are traditional chart-comparison notes.
Work and money
Gye-hae suits fields that use depth and range: psychology and counselling, research, writing and film, music, philosophy, travel and trade, shipping, and roles that bring many people or ideas together.
The branch holds no Wealth star for Gye, and Rob Wealth tends to share or spend. Money is easier to keep with separate accounts, written partnerships and a habit of saving before lending.
How Gye-hae differs from the other Gye pillars
- Gye-sa (癸巳) is its clash branch and complete opposite: a weak Gye at Conception over Direct Wealth, practical and money-minded.
- Gye-chuk (癸丑) is also wintry, but its seat is Seven Killings Earth with White Tiger, which gives it a harder, more disciplined edge.
- Gye-myo (癸卯) shares the Hurting Officer stem but makes Eating God output its main theme.
- Gye-yu (癸酉) is supported by Resource rather than by peers.
Gye-hae follows Im-sul (壬戌) and hands the cycle back to Gap-ja (甲子). For the stem and branch alone, see the Gye Day Master and Pig pages.
Gye-hae in 2026–2030
None of these five years clashes or combines with the Hae branch, so the period is read mainly through the Ten Gods on each year. 2026 Byeong-o (丙午) brings Direct Wealth over Indirect Wealth, a good use for a strong Day Master. 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) is Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings, mixing gain with pressure. 2028 Mu-sin (戊申) gives Direct Officer over Direct Resource, and 戊 forms a stem combination with 癸, traditionally a sign of formal commitments. 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) is Seven Killings over Indirect Resource. 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌) is Direct Resource over Direct Officer. FAQ
Why is Gye-hae the last day pillar?
Gye is the tenth Heavenly Stem and Hae the twelfth Earthly Branch, and they first meet at position 60. After Gye-hae the cycle restarts with Gap-ja.
Is Gye-hae a strong day pillar?
On the reverse-counted stages this engine uses, Gye is at Emperor on Hae and the branch's main stem is Water. That makes Gye-hae the strongest of the Gye pillars, which works best when the chart also has outlets.
What does Rob Wealth in the Gye-hae spouse palace mean?
It traditionally points to an equal, independent partner and a relationship of two strong people. Classical cautions about rivalry and shared money are tendencies to manage, not predictions.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Pig branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gye Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
| Hidden stem | Element | Share of the month | Ten God |
|---|---|---|---|
| 戊 Mu | Yang Earth | 7 days | Direct Officer |
| 甲 Gap | Yang Wood | 7 days | Hurting Officer |
| 壬 Im | Yang Water | 16 days | Rob Wealth |
