The Rabbit (卯, Myo) in Saju: Element, Rabbit Years and Clash
Myo (묘 卯) is the Earthly Branch (지지 地支 jiji) behind the Rabbit in Korean Saju (사주). It is Yin Wood at full spring: grass, vines and leaves rather than a tall trunk. Where the Tiger branch before it is the first push of growth, Myo is growth spreading in every direction. Rabbit years include 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023. In a reading, Myo can appear as your year animal, as the branch under your Day Master, or in your month or hour pillar.
The branch behind the animal
Myo is Wood with Yin polarity. Its month begins at Gyeongchip (경칩 驚蟄, Awakening of Insects) around March 6 and lasts until about April 4, the second month of the Saju year. Its hour runs from 05:00 to 07:00, the sunrise block.
Its hidden stems (지장간 支藏干 jijanggan) are short and simple:
- Gap (甲) Yang Wood, 10 days
- Eul (乙) Yin Wood, 20 days, the main qi
Nothing but Wood. Along with the Rat, Horse and Rooster, the Rabbit is one of the four branches that sit at the exact middle of a season, and all four are unusually pure. That purity is why Myo is the peak of the Wood triple frame and why, when a reader wants to know how strong the Wood in a chart is, a Myo branch counts heavily. The Five Elements guide explains how that strength is weighed against the other elements.
Yin Wood as an image
Classical writers compare Eul and Myo to climbing plants and flowers. The picture is flexible growth that finds a way around obstacles rather than through them. In personality terms, readers connect a strong Myo with tact, aesthetic sense and persistence that looks gentle from outside.
As your year branch, and as your day branch
Your tti (띠), the zodiac animal Koreans talk about, is the branch in your year pillar. In a reading, that branch describes your family background and the social face others first see. A Rabbit year is traditionally associated with a mild, sociable image. Because everyone born in that Saju year shares it, readers keep it in proportion.
Your day branch (일지 日支 ilji) is different. It is the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮), right under your Day Master, and it is read for intimacy, marriage and home life. A Myo day branch suggests someone who wants a warm, lively home and close companionship. What that Wood does depends on the stem above it. For Eul it is a firm root, for Jeong Fire it is fuel, and for Gi Earth or Sin Metal it plays a more complicated role.
Harmony, triple frame and clash
These are traditional notes about how Myo interacts with other branches in a chart. They are not a rule for who should date whom.
- Six harmony (육합 六合 yukhap): Myo with Sul (戌) Dog.
- Triple frame (삼합 三合 samhap): Hae (亥) Pig, Myo (卯) Rabbit and Mi (未) Goat form a Wood frame, and Myo sits at its centre.
- Clash (충 沖 chung): Myo with Yu (酉) Rooster, Yin Wood facing Yin Metal across the circle.
The Rabbit and Rooster clash pits two pure, mid-season branches against each other, so readers tend to treat it as a sharp one. In practice it is often read as changes in relationships or surroundings, not as a curse on a couple.
Why your Saju year may differ from your zodiac year
The Saju year changes at Ipchun (입춘 立春), the start of spring around February 4. Lunar New Year, which most people use for the zodiac, can come earlier or later.
A baby born on January 28, 2023 is a good example. Lunar New Year was January 22 that year, so the family would hear that their child is a Rabbit. Ipchun had not yet arrived, so the Saju year pillar is still Im-in (壬寅), the Tiger year of 2022. The Gye-myo (癸卯) Rabbit year starts only in early February 2023.
The five Rabbit day pillars
Myo is Yin and pairs only with Yin stems: Eul-myo (乙卯), Jeong-myo (丁卯), Gi-myo (己卯), Sin-myo (辛卯) and Gye-myo (癸卯). Eul-myo is the doubled form, Yin Wood on Yin Wood.
FAQ
What element is the Rabbit in Korean Saju?
The Rabbit branch Myo is Yin Wood. Its only hidden stems are Gap (甲) and Eul (乙), so it is one of the purest Wood branches.
Which years are Rabbit years?
Rabbit years include 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023, and the next is 2035. Each one starts at Ipchun, not Lunar New Year.
Do Rabbit and Rooster really clash?
Myo and Yu form one of the six traditional clashes. It points to friction and change between those parts of a chart, while actual compatibility depends on the two full charts.
