Gye-mi (癸未) Day Pillar: Late-Summer Rain on the Goat
Gye-mi (癸未, 계미) is the 20th pillar in the sixty-pair cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja), placing Gye, Yin Water, on Mi, the Goat. Mi is the earth of the last weeks of summer: baked, dusty and holding the heat of the whole season. Gye is rain. Together they are the first rain on a parched garden in late July, soaked up as soon as it lands. As a day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju), Gye-mi is useful, pressed and often underestimated.
The image
Earth controls Water, and dry earth absorbs it, so the branch works against the Day Master. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of Mi are Jeong, Yin Fire, for 9 days as Indirect Wealth; Eul, Yin Wood, for 3 days as Eating God; and Gi, Yin Earth, for 18 days as the main stem. For Gye, Gi is Seven Killings (칠살 七殺, chilsal), which gives the branch its Ten God. Seven Killings is pressure: rank won the hard way, tests, risk and authority that does not ask politely.
The small Eating God stem is the pillar's own answer to Seven Killings, since in classical theory Eating God restrains it. That makes skill and output Gye-mi's main defence: do excellent work and the pressure becomes manageable.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gye on Mi is at Tomb (묘 墓, myo) in the reverse counting most Korean practitioners use for yin stems. Some schools instead place Water's tomb in Jin for both polarities and would not call this a Tomb. On the method used here, the Day Master draws little strength from its seat, so Metal and Water elsewhere matter more.
Gye-mi carries no special named stars. Its Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are Sin (Monkey) and Yu (Rooster), the two Metal branches that would supply Resource.
Character
Gye-mi people often learn early that nothing will be handed to them. They tend to be hard-working, patient under strain and good at making a little go a long way.
They frequently take on caretaking or service roles, and the Goat branch adds gentleness and an eye for comfort and beauty. Indirect Wealth hidden inside gives them a practical instinct for opportunity that people around them may not notice.
The blind spots belong to a weak Day Master under pressure. Gye-mi may accept heavy demands without bargaining, absorb stress quietly, or doubt its own ability.
Relationships
Seven Killings in the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) traditionally points to a strong, demanding partner or a relationship with challenge built into it. In a woman's chart, this is also a classical husband star. Because the Day Master is weak here, the traditional caution is a partner whose expectations overwhelm Gye-mi's own.
Traditional notes: Mu-o (戊午) is Gye-mi's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap), as 戊 combines 癸 and 午 combines 未. Gi-chuk (己丑) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pattern (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung), as 己 controls 癸 and 丑 clashes 未. These are classical comparison notes, not verdicts.
Work and money
Gye-mi suits work that rewards reliability under pressure: healthcare, hospitality, public service, agriculture and food, logistics, legal support, and roles inside demanding organisations. The Eating God stem means craft and skill are its best leverage.
Indirect Wealth in the branch suggests side income and opportunistic gains more than a single salary.
How Gye-mi differs from the other Gye pillars
- Gye-chuk (癸丑) is its clash branch and winter counterpart: also Seven Killings Earth, but Chuk is wet and holds a Friend stem, and Gye stands at Cap & Sash there. Gye-chuk is the hardier of the two.
- Gye-sa (癸巳) also sits on summer heat, but with Direct Wealth as its main Ten God and Heavenly Noble for support.
- Gye-hae (癸亥) is at Emperor on its own element and needs no rescue at all.
- Gye-myo (癸卯) shares the Eating God theme but makes it the main force.
Gye-mi follows Im-o (壬午) and precedes Gap-sin (甲申). For more on the stem see the Gye Day Master; for the branch, the Goat.
Gye-mi in 2026–2030
2026 is Byeong-o (丙午): Direct Wealth over Indirect Wealth, and 午 forms a branch harmony (六合) with the day branch 未. That is traditionally a cooperative year at home, though it adds more Fire to a pillar that already has plenty. 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) brings Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings and has the same branch as the day branch, so the pillar's theme of pressure doubles. 2028 Mu-sin (戊申) is Direct Officer over Direct Resource, with 戊 forming a stem combination with 癸, and Metal Resource finally arrives. 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) gives Seven Killings over Indirect Resource; 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌) gives Direct Resource over Direct Officer, the most supportive year of the five. FAQ
Is Gye-mi a weak day pillar?
Gye stands at the Tomb stage on Mi and its main hidden Ten God is Seven Killings, so the Day Master draws little support from its seat. The rest of the chart determines whether the person is weak overall.
What does the Gye-mi spouse palace show?
The main hidden stem is Gi, Seven Killings for Gye, which traditionally points to a strong or demanding partner. The small Eating God and Indirect Wealth stems add warmth and practicality.
What happens for Gye-mi in 2027?
2027 is Jeong-mi, the same branch as the Gye-mi day branch, with Indirect Wealth and Seven Killings. Traditional readers see it as a year that amplifies the pillar's existing themes.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Goat branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gye Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
| Hidden stem | Element | Share of the month | Ten God |
|---|---|---|---|
| 丁 Jeong | Yin Fire | 9 days | Indirect Wealth |
| 乙 Eul | Yin Wood | 3 days | Eating God |
| 己 Gi | Yin Earth | 18 days | Seven Killings |
