Eul-hae (乙亥) Day Pillar in Saju: Yin Wood Pig, a Lotus on Winter Water
Eul-hae (乙亥, 을해) puts Eul, Yin Wood, on Hae, the Pig branch. It is number 12 of the sixty-pillar cycle. Hae is the first month of winter and Yang Water. The image is a lotus or water lily on a cold lake at the start of winter: the stem reaches down into deep water, the leaves rest on the surface, and the plant moves with the current instead of fighting it.

Water feeds Wood, so the branch supports the Day Master. Hae's main hidden stem (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) is Im, Yang Water, for 16 days, which is Direct Resource in Ten God (십신 十神, sipsin) terms: learning, protection, credentials and care. Hae also holds Gap, Yang Wood, for 7 days as Rob Wealth, a sturdier root beside the delicate Eul, and Mu, Yang Earth, for 7 days as Direct Wealth.
The twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong) show why schools argue about this pillar. Under the standard reverse count for Yin stems, Eul at Hae is in Death (사 死, sa), the stage where outward energy has gone still. Yet Hae is also where Gap Wood begins its Long Life, and the branch is full of nourishing Water. Many practitioners therefore treat Eul-hae as better supported than the stage name implies. The usual concern is the opposite of weakness: too much cold Water can leave the plant floating without firm ground, which is why Fire and Earth elsewhere are welcome.
Character
Eul-hae tends to be receptive, intuitive and kind. These people absorb atmosphere quickly, read others well and often have a gift for learning languages, ideas or spiritual traditions. Direct Resource gives a respectful, studious streak and a trust in teachers and institutions.
They usually prefer cooperation to competition and can adapt to almost any setting, the way a water plant follows the lake. Many have a quietly artistic or contemplative side.
Blind spots: passivity, drifting with circumstances, and dependence on others' approval or protection. The Death stage can show as low drive when no one is pushing, and the hidden Rob Wealth can mean a stronger friend or sibling taking the lead, or the credit. Setting personal goals that do not depend on anyone else's plan is a recurring lesson for Eul-hae.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Direct Resource. Traditionally this suggests a partner who is nurturing, steady and perhaps older in spirit, someone who supports Eul-hae's growth. The relationship often feels like a refuge. The classical caution is imbalance: one partner as the caretaker, the other as the cared-for, and in some readings a strong role for the mother or in-laws, since Resource also stands for the mother.
Gyeong-in (庚寅) is the heaven-and-earth combination pillar (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 乙 with 庚, 亥 with 寅. Sin-sa (辛巳) is the heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 辛 cuts 乙 and 巳 clashes 亥. Treat these as traditional observations, not outcomes.
Work and money
Eul-hae fits learning, care and interpretation: education, counselling, translation, research, libraries and archives, social work, religion and philosophy, healthcare support, and creative fields like illustration or music that reward sensitivity. It does best in environments that offer mentorship.
The small Direct Wealth in the branch suggests steady, modest income tied to qualifications or a stable post. Rob Wealth beside it is the traditional warning about money drifting to friends or family. Eul-hae benefits from a separate personal account and a clear habit of saving first.
How Eul-hae differs from the other Eul pillars
- Eul-sa (乙巳) is its opposite branch: Fire as Hurting Officer in Bathing. Eul-sa performs; Eul-hae listens.
- Eul-chuk (乙丑) is the other winter Eul pillar, but on frozen Earth with Indirect Wealth as the main branch god: more practical and possessive.
- Eul-myo (乙卯) roots in pure Wood; Eul-hae roots in Water and relies more on support.
- Eul-yu (乙酉) faces Seven Killings; Eul-hae receives Direct Resource, the element that would soften Eul-yu's Metal.
All six share the Eul Yin Wood Day Master. In the cycle Eul-hae follows Gap-sul (甲戌) and precedes Byeong-ja (丙子). The branch animal is covered on the Pig page.
Eul-hae in 2026–2030
2026, Byeong-o (丙午), brings Hurting Officer over Eating God, and 2027, Jeong-mi (丁未), Eating God over Indirect Wealth. These two Fire years warm the winter lake, encouraging Eul-hae to speak up and produce.
2028, Mu-sin (戊申), and 2029, Gi-yu (己酉), fall on Sin (Monkey) and Yu (Rooster), the two Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches of this pillar. 2028 sets Direct Wealth over Direct Officer and 2029 sets Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings. Many readers would expect money and career gains in those years to arrive more slowly than the work put in.
2030, Gyeong-sul (庚戌), places Direct Officer over Direct Wealth, and the Gyeong stem combines with the Eul Day Master, a classic year for formal commitments. None of the five years clashes or combines with the Hae branch itself. Your luck pillars may change these themes; the day pillar calculator shows your full chart.
FAQ
Is Eul-hae a weak day pillar?
Under the standard count Eul is in the Death stage at Hae, but the branch is mostly Water that feeds Wood. Many practitioners therefore read Eul-hae as supported rather than weak.
Who is compatible with Eul-hae?
Gyeong-in (庚寅) is the traditional heaven-and-earth combination pillar for Eul-hae, and Tiger in a partner's day branch combines with Pig. Real compatibility depends on both full charts.
What does 乙亥 mean in Saju?
乙亥 is Yin Wood over the Pig, the Water branch of early winter. It is pillar 12 of the sixty and pictures a water plant resting on a cold lake.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Pig branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Eul Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.

|---|---|---|---|
| 戊 Mu | Yang Earth | 7 days | Direct Wealth |
