Gap-ja (甲子, 갑자) is the day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju) that puts Gap, Yang Wood, on top of Ja, the Rat branch. It is number 1 of the sixty-pillar cycle. The same sixty-step cycle is why Koreans celebrate 환갑 (hwangap) at sixty: it is the year your birth-year pillar comes round again. Picture a tall tree standing at midnight in winter, its roots sunk into dark, cold water. Nothing is growing yet, but the water is quietly loading the trunk for spring.

The image

Water feeds Wood in the five-element cycle, so here the branch produces the stem. In the language of the Ten Gods (십신 十神, sipsin), that makes the branch a Resource for the Day Master: the element that teaches, shelters and supplies. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) inside Ja confirm it. Im, Yang Water, holds 10 days and acts as Indirect Resource; Gye, Yin Water, holds 20 days and acts as Direct Resource, which is the branch's main Ten God.

On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gap at Ja sits in Bathing (목욕 沐浴, mogyok). Bathing is the infant being washed: alive and promising, but exposed and not yet steady. Put together, Gap-ja is a Day Master with real backing that has not finished growing into it. The practical caution in classical texts is that winter water is cold. Too much of it and the tree soaks rather than grows, which is why many readers look for Fire elsewhere in a Gap-ja chart to warm things up.

Character

Gap-ja people tend to absorb before they act. They read the manual, ask the second question and want the reason behind a rule, which makes them good learners and fair-minded planners.

The Bathing stage adds a restless, unfinished quality. Gap-ja can start several directions at once, test them, and drop the ones that do not feel right.

Blind spots grow from the same roots. With so much Resource, Gap-ja can wait for perfect information and miss the window to move. They may lean on mentors, parents or institutions longer than they need to, and they can mistake preparing for doing. A deadline for ending research helps.

Relationships

The day branch is traditionally the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung), the seat of the closest partner. Here it holds Direct Resource, so the classic reading is a partner who looks after you: steady, protective, possibly a little parental. The traditional caution: the caretaker role can slide into one partner managing the other.

Two traditional notes. Gi-chuk (己丑) is this pillar's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 甲 combines with 己 and 子 combines with 丑, so the two pillars are read as naturally drawn together. Gyeong-o (庚午) is its "heaven strikes, earth clashes" partner (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 庚 cuts 甲 and 午 clashes with 子. These are classical patterns to notice in a comparison, not forecasts about any couple.

Work and money

Resource in the branch favours work that rewards accumulated knowledge: research, education, editing, planning, policy, healthcare administration, or any field with exams and credentials.

Neither hidden stem in Ja is a Wealth star, so money is rarely the main motive. Income usually arrives through qualifications, a position or expertise rather than trading or speculation. The risk is undervaluing their own work.

How Gap-ja differs from the other Gap pillars

All six share the Gap Yang Wood Day Master and its sense of direction. In the cycle, Gap-ja follows Gye-hae (癸亥) and precedes Eul-chuk (乙丑).

FAQ

Is Gap-ja a good day pillar?

Gap-ja is generally considered a supported pillar because Water feeds the Wood Day Master and both hidden stems are Resource. Its main caution is coldness and over-reliance on support, so the rest of the chart matters.

Who is compatible with Gap-ja?

Traditionally Gi-chuk (己丑) forms a heaven-and-earth combination with Gap-ja, and partners with Ox in the day branch combine with Rat. Real compatibility depends on both full charts, not one pillar.

What does 甲子 mean in Saju?

甲子 combines Gap (Yang Wood) with Ja (the Rat, Water). It is the first pillar of the sixty-pillar cycle and is read as a tree drawing on deep winter water.

Hidden stems in the branch

The Rat branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gap Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
