Jeong-hae (丁亥) Day Pillar: A Lantern Crossing Night Water
Jeong-hae (丁亥) sets Jeong, Yin Fire, over Hae, the Water Pig. It is the 24th pair in the sixty-day cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja), between Byeong-sul (丙戌) and Mu-ja (戊子). Picture a ferry crossing a wide river on a November night with a single lantern at the bow. The dark water could put the flame out, yet the lantern is how the boat finds the far bank.
The image
Water controls Fire, so the branch acts on the stem: this is an Officer seat. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of 亥 are Mu (戊) Yang Earth for 7 days, Gap (甲) Yang Wood for 7 days and Im (壬) Yang Water for 16 days. For a Jeong Day Master (일간 日干, ilgan), Mu is the Hurting Officer, Gap is the Direct Resource and Im is the Direct Officer. Im is the main stem, so the branch counts as Direct Officer.
Two classical features make this pillar distinctive. First, 丁 and 壬 form a stem combination, and Im is hidden right under the Day Master. Readers call this a hidden combination (암합 暗合, amhap): the self is quietly bonded to the Officer in its own seat, often read as a strong tie to a partner, employer or principle. Second, the Gap inside 亥 is the seasoned Wood that feeds a candle, so the Officer produces Resource and the Resource feeds the self. That chain, called 관인상생 (官印相生, gwanin sangsaeng), is one of the most valued patterns in classical texts: authority that supports rather than crushes.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Jeong at 亥 is in Conception (태 胎, tae), an embryonic stage without root. The Gap in the branch helps, but most readers still want Wood or Fire elsewhere in the chart.
Character
Jeong-hae people are often principled, courteous and calm on the surface, with a strong inner sense of duty. They think before speaking, respect institutions, and tend to be trusted with responsibility early. The Pig adds a tolerant, easygoing side.
The Heavenly Noble (천을귀인 天乙貴人) sits on this pillar, traditionally a sign of help arriving from capable people at the right moment.
Blind spots: loyalty that lasts longer than it should, reluctance to break rules even when they are wrong, and self-doubt hidden behind good manners. The small Hurting Officer can surface as sudden frankness after long silence.
Relationships
The day branch is the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung). The Direct Officer there is the classical husband star in a woman's chart and the star of order and responsibility in a man's. Together with the hidden 丁壬 combination, Jeong-hae is often described as a pillar of devoted, committed partnership, with a spouse who brings stability or status. The risk is a relationship that becomes more about obligation than closeness.
Traditional notes: Im-in (壬寅) is the harmony pillar, with 丁 and 壬 combining and 亥 and 寅 combining, called 천지합 (天地合, cheonjihap). Gye-sa (癸巳) is the clash pillar, with 癸 controlling 丁 and 巳 clashing 亥, called 천극지충 (天剋地沖, cheongeuk jichung).
Work and money
Officer-and-Resource pillars suit structured, trusted careers: public service, law, education, medicine, diplomacy, compliance, research institutions, roles that carry a title and a duty of care. Money follows position and reputation; it rarely comes from risky trading.
How Jeong-hae differs from the other Jeong pillars
- Jeong-sa (丁巳), its clash opposite, is at Emperor on Fire and answers to itself. Jeong-hae is at Conception on Water and answers to a role.
- Jeong-yu (丁酉) shares the Heavenly Noble but sits on Wealth; it trades where Jeong-hae serves.
- Jeong-myo (丁卯) is pure Resource, all study. Jeong-hae puts the same Resource to work under an Officer.
- Jeong-chuk (丁丑) also has Water in its branch, but there it is the Seven Killings hidden in a field of work; in Jeong-hae it is the Direct Officer in charge.
Jeong-hae in 2026–2030
None of the five years forms a clash, harmony or repeat with the 亥 branch, so this is a comparatively even stretch for the day pillar.
- 2026, Byeong-o (丙午): Rob Wealth stem, Friend branch. The year adds Fire that this pillar usually lacks. 午 is one of Jeong-hae's Void branches, so readers expect its competition to bite less.
- 2027, Jeong-mi (丁未): Friend stem, Eating God branch. 未 is the other Void branch.
- 2028, Mu-sin (戊申): Hurting Officer stem, Direct Wealth branch. Hurting Officer can strain an Officer-seated pillar, so frankness with superiors needs tact.
- 2029, Gi-yu (己酉): Eating God stem, Indirect Wealth branch.
- 2030, Gyeong-sul (庚戌): Direct Wealth stem, Hurting Officer branch. Income rises with skill; tact with authority still matters.
The Void branches (공망 空亡, gongmang) are O 午 Horse and Mi 未 Goat; see Void. For each half, see the Jeong Day Master and Pig pages, and use the day pillar calculator for your own chart.
FAQ
What is the hidden combination in Jeong-hae?
The Day Master 丁 combines with 壬, the main hidden stem of 亥. Readers take it as a close bond with the Direct Officer in the spouse palace, often a committed partnership or a strong tie to an employer.
Is Jeong-hae a weak day pillar?
Jeong is in Conception at 亥 and Water controls Fire, so it lacks root on its own. The Gap Wood hidden in 亥 gives some support, and the rest of the chart decides overall strength.
How do 2026 and 2027 affect Jeong-hae?
They bring 午 and 未, which are this pillar's Void branches, alongside Rob Wealth, Friend and Eating God influences. Traditional readers expect those years' effects to feel softer than usual.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Pig branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Jeong Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
| Hidden stem | Element | Share of the month | Ten God |
|---|---|---|---|
| 戊 Mu | Yang Earth | 7 days | Hurting Officer |
| 甲 Gap | Yang Wood | 7 days | Direct Resource |
| 壬 Im | Yang Water | 16 days | Direct Officer |
