Gi-chuk (己丑) Day Pillar: Yin Earth Ox, the Frozen Field in Winter
Gi-chuk (己丑) is the 26th pillar of the sixty-pair cycle, Gi (己) Yin Earth sitting on Chuk (丑), the Earth branch of the Ox. It belongs to the coldest weeks of winter. Picture a farm field in January: frozen on top, with seed grain stored in the barn and water locked as ice in the soil. Nothing looks active, yet the next harvest is already being kept here.
The image
Gi is cultivated soil, garden earth that takes in and nourishes. Chuk is wet, cold Earth. Stem and branch share the same element, and the main hidden stem (지장간, 支藏干, jijanggan), Gi (己) for 18 days, is Friend (비견, 比肩, bigyeon). The branch's Ten God is Friend.
The other two stems describe what the field is storing:
- Gye (癸) Yin Water, 9 days: Indirect Wealth, opportunistic or irregular money, the frozen water in the ground.
- Sin (辛) Yin Metal, 3 days: Eating God, a small, fine skill or craft, the tools put away for winter.
Chuk is called a "metal storehouse" (금고, 金庫, geumgo). On the twelve life stages (십이운성, 十二運星, sibi-unseong), the engine places Gi at Tomb (묘, 墓, myo) here, using the Fire track for Earth and reverse counting for yin stems. Tomb means stored, gathered, not on display. Some schools reject separate yin-stem stages altogether and would simply count Gi as rooted in its own Earth. Both views agree on the core picture: substance is present but held in reserve.
Character
Gi-chuk people tend to be patient, persistent and quietly stubborn. The Ox is the most enduring branch, and Gi on Chuk often shows a capacity to work for years without applause. They rarely rush, rarely boast and often turn out to have prepared more than anyone noticed.
What distinguishes this pillar within the Gi group is self-containment. Friend in the seat plus the Tomb stage produces someone who prefers to rely on their own resources and keeps a private inner store of thoughts. Under the cold surface there is warmth for a close circle.
Blind spots:
- Thawing late. Gi-chuk may hold back too long, waiting for spring that has already arrived.
- Quiet resentment. Things stored in winter soil can sour; unspoken grievances linger.
- Rigid routines that feel safe but limit growth.
A chart with Fire elsewhere, especially in the month or hour, warms this field considerably, and most readers look for it first.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁, 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Friend. Traditionally that suggests a partner who is like a peer or companion, someone of similar temperament or background. The relationship is usually loyal and practical. The classical caution is that two quiet, self-reliant people can drift into parallel lives unless they plan time together.
The heaven-and-earth combination (천지합, 天地合, cheonji-hap) partner is Gap-ja (甲子): 己 combines with 甲, and 丑 combines with 子. The heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충, 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung) is Eul-mi (乙未), where summer Earth clashes winter Earth. These are traditional compatibility notes, not judgements on real couples.
Gi-chuk's Void branches (공망, 空亡, gongmang) are O (午) Horse and Mi (未) Goat, both summer branches; see Void.
Work and money
The field-in-winter picture favours slow, cumulative work: agriculture and food supply, archives and records, finance and savings, real estate, pharmacy, research, maintenance and long-tenure institutional roles. The hidden Eating God points to a refined skill, often detailed or technical.
Indirect Wealth in storage means money tends to arrive in lumps or from unexpected sources, then gets saved. Gi-chuk is usually careful with spending. The risk is keeping capital frozen when it could be put to work.
How Gi-chuk differs from the other Gi pillars
- Gi-mi (己未) is its clash opposite on the branch level: also Earth on Earth with Friend, but sun-baked summer soil with Sharp Edge. Gi-mi is hot and assertive; Gi-chuk is cold and patient.
- Gi-sa (己巳) sits at Emperor on Fire Resource, warm and self-assured where Gi-chuk is reserved.
- Gi-yu (己酉) brings the Metal out as visible Eating God and several study stars; in Gi-chuk the Metal is only a small hidden stem.
- Gi-hae (己亥) holds Water as Direct Wealth in its seat, while Gi-chuk holds it as stored Indirect Wealth.
In the cycle it follows Mu-ja (戊子) and comes before Gyeong-in (庚寅). See Gi Yin Earth for the stem and the Ox page for the branch.
Gi-chuk in 2026–2030
Fire arrives first, which is welcome for a winter field. 2026 Byeong-o (丙午) brings Direct Resource over Indirect Resource: support, learning and warmth. 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未) brings Indirect Resource over Friend, and the Goat clashes the Ox in the spouse palace, a traditional marker of movement, renovation or a shake-up in home and partnership. 2028 Mu-sin (戊申) is Rob Wealth over Hurting Officer: competition and plain speaking. 2029 Gi-yu (己酉) is Friend over Eating God, a comfortable, productive year. 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌) is Hurting Officer over Rob Wealth, ambitious but argumentative.

FAQ
What is the Gi-chuk (己丑) day pillar like?
It is Yin Earth over the Earth Ox, read as patient, enduring and self-contained. Friend sits in the spouse palace and the stage is Tomb, a state of stored energy.
Does Gi-chuk carry any special stars?
Orienteller's engine lists no named stars for Gi-chuk on its own. Stars can still appear from the interaction with other pillars in a full chart.
Which year clashes Gi-chuk between 2026 and 2030?
2027, Jeong-mi (丁未), because the Goat branch clashes the Ox. That is traditionally read as change around home or partnership.
Hidden stems in the branch
The Ox branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gi Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
| Hidden stem | Element | Share of the month | Ten God |
|---|---|---|---|
| 癸 Gye | Yin Water | 9 days | Indirect Wealth |
| 辛 Sin | Yin Metal | 3 days | Eating God |
| 己 Gi | Yin Earth | 18 days | Friend |
