Gi-mi (己未) Day Pillar: Sun-Baked Yin Earth on the Goat Branch
Gi-mi (己未) is the 56th pillar of the sixty-pair cycle, Gi (己) Yin Earth sitting on Mi (未), the Earth branch of the Goat in the hottest part of late summer. Imagine a field in August after weeks without rain: the soil is dry and cracked, deep roots still hold on underneath, and the air shimmers. It is fertile ground that badly wants water.
The image
Gi on Mi is Earth on Earth. The main hidden stem (지장간, 支藏干, jijanggan) is Gi (己) itself, 18 days, so the branch's Ten God is Friend (비견, 比肩, bigyeon). Mi is known as a "wood storehouse" (목고, 木庫, mokgo) and the other two stems show why:
- Jeong (丁) Yin Fire, 9 days: Indirect Resource (편인, 偏印, pyeonin), unconventional learning, intuition and a private inner world.
- Eul (乙) Yin Wood, 3 days: Seven Killings, a thin root of pressure or ambition buried in the soil.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성, 十二運星, sibi-unseong), the engine places Gi at Cap & Sash (관대, 冠帶, gwandae) on Mi, following the Fire track for Earth with yin stems counted in reverse. Cap & Sash is the rising stage of a young adult stepping forward with confidence. Add Earth on Earth plus Fire inside and this Day Master stands strongly on its own seat.
Two stars are attached. Gi on Mi carries Sharp Edge (양인살, 羊刃, yangin-sal) in the engine's table, a mark of concentrated force and determination. Some schools apply Sharp Edge only to yang stems, so readers differ on how much weight it gets here. Gi on Mi also carries Hidden Pay (암록, 暗祿, amnok), traditionally a sign of quiet support or income that arrives without fanfare.
Character
Gi-mi people tend to be self-reliant, persistent and more strong-willed than their mild manner suggests. Where many Gi pillars bend to fit their surroundings, this one tends to hold its ground. Indirect Resource adds an inward, sometimes unusual mind: interest in philosophy, alternative methods, spiritual practice or specialist knowledge that others overlook.
The dry-field image points to the main tension. Gi-mi has plenty of substance and not much flow. It can become fixed in its views, slow to accept help and inclined to work alone. Its roots are long, so Gi-mi is also loyal and hard to discourage once committed.
Typical strengths: endurance, independence, depth of focus, quiet generosity to people it trusts. Typical blind spots: stubbornness, secrecy about problems, and a tendency to carry everything alone until it cracks, like the field.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁, 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Friend. Traditionally that points to a partner who is an equal and a companion, often similar in outlook. With Sharp Edge in the same seat, classical texts advised partners to respect each other's independence; two strong wills in one house work best when roles are clear.
The heaven-and-earth combination (천지합, 天地合, cheonji-hap) partner is Gap-o (甲午), since 己 combines with 甲 and 未 combines with 午. The heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충, 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung) is Eul-chuk (乙丑), where frozen winter Earth meets summer Earth. These labels describe traditional chemistry, nothing more.
The Void branches (공망, 空亡, gongmang) are Ja (子) Rat and Chuk (丑) Ox. Ja is Water, the very element this dry field needs, which some readers note with interest. See Void.
Work and money
Friend plus Indirect Resource suits independent specialists: consultants, researchers, therapists, practitioners of traditional or alternative disciplines, craftspeople, farmers and small business owners who control their own process. Sharp Edge adds stamina for demanding or competitive fields.
Wealth is not in the branch, and Friend means sharing the pot with peers. Gi-mi often earns steadily through specialised skill, with Hidden Pay pointing to help from behind the scenes. The practical risk is partnerships with unclear ownership.
How Gi-mi differs from the other Gi pillars
- Gi-chuk (己丑) is its exact seasonal opposite and clash partner on the branch: frozen field at Tomb versus dry field at Cap & Sash. Gi-chuk waits; Gi-mi pushes.
- Gi-sa (己巳) is strong too, but through Direct Resource rather than Friend, which makes it more conventional and studious.
- Gi-hae (己亥) has the Water Gi-mi lacks, sitting on Direct Wealth.
- Gi-yu (己酉) spends its energy through Eating God, while Gi-mi keeps energy in.
In the cycle it follows Mu-o (戊午), the other Sharp Edge Earth pillar, and precedes Gyeong-sin (庚申). See Gi Yin Earth for the stem and the Goat page for the branch.
Gi-mi in 2026–2030
- 2026 Byeong-o (丙午): Direct Resource over Indirect Resource, and the Horse forms a branch harmony with the Goat in the spouse palace. Supportive and good for bonds, though heavy on Fire.
- 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未): Indirect Resource over Friend, and the year's branch is the same Goat as the day branch. Expect the pillar's own traits, independence and stubbornness, to be amplified.
- 2028 Mu-sin (戊申): Rob Wealth over Hurting Officer. Finally an outlet through Metal; speak up, but watch competition.
- 2029 Gi-yu (己酉): Friend over Eating God. Productive and sociable.
- 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌): Hurting Officer over Rob Wealth. Bold and outspoken.

Does Gi-mi have Sharp Edge?
Orienteller's engine lists Sharp Edge for Gi on Mi, along with Hidden Pay. Some schools only apply Sharp Edge to yang stems, so its weight here is debated.
What element does Gi-mi most need?
Classical readers usually look for Water, and often Metal, elsewhere in the chart to cool and drain a dry Earth-on-Earth pillar. The full chart decides.
