Friend (比肩) in Saju: The Peer Star of Self, Siblings and Rivals
Friend (비견 比肩 bigyeon, literally "shoulder to shoulder") is the Ten God for any character that has the same element and the same polarity as your Day Master. It is your own stem seen again somewhere else in the chart: a Gap Day Master meeting another Gap, a Sin meeting another Sin. In traditional readings it stands for self-reliance, peers and siblings, and in practice it shows how much support or competition surrounds your sense of self.
The Friend is the simplest of the ten to calculate. Two conditions: same element, same polarity. The Ten Gods overview shows how the other nine follow from changing one or both of those conditions.
What it represents
Classical Korean texts list the Friend among the "self" stars, together with Rob Wealth. Its traditional domains are:
- Siblings and peers. Brothers, sisters, classmates, colleagues of equal rank. In the old family-role system (육친 六親 yukchin) the Friend is a sibling of the same sex, though many modern readers simply read it as peers of any gender.
- Independence. A Friend in the chart adds weight to the Day Master, so people with one or two are usually described as self-directed, with a clear sense of their own way of doing things.
- Partnership on equal terms. Co-founders, teammates, business partners who split things evenly.
The image is of standing beside someone of equal height. That brings company and backing, and it also means someone else is taking up the same space.
When it helps
A Friend is most useful when the Day Master is weak. If your chart has a lot of Wealth, Officer or Output pulling energy away from you, a Friend is like another pair of hands. Readers say people with this setup do well in teams and partnerships, recover after setbacks through their network, and find it easier to stand their ground.
The Friend also protects. In the controlling cycle, the Friend's element controls the element of Indirect Wealth, so in a chart where money or ventures are too heavy for the Day Master to hold, a Friend helps carry the load.
When it becomes too much
When the Day Master is already strong, extra Friends tip the balance. The classical warning is "many Friends dividing the wealth" (군비쟁재 群比爭財): too many equals competing for the same limited resources. Readers translate that into stubbornness, difficulty taking advice, money that has to be shared out, and friction with siblings or partners.
Absence matters too. A weak Day Master with no Friend and no Resource is said to lack backing. That person may work hard alone and find it harder to ask for help. Neither excess nor absence is fixed fate; Luck Pillars bring Friends in and out over the decades, which is covered in Luck Pillars.
In practice
Two examples from the full table show how the Friend appears in real charts.
For a Mu (戊) Day Master, the Friend is Mu (戊), and it appears as the main qi of the branches 辰 Dragon and 戌 Dog. A Mu person born in a Dragon or Dog year, or with a Dragon or Dog in the month pillar, has a Friend sitting in a branch. Because Earth is the element of stability, a Mu chart with several Friends often reads as solid and hard to move, for better and worse.
For a Gye (癸) Day Master, the Friend is Gye (癸), and it appears in the branch 子 Rat. A Gye person born in winter, in the Rat month, has a Friend in the month branch, the most influential seat in the chart. That roots a small, misty Water stem firmly, which classical readers treat as a real gain for a stem that is easily scattered.
The other eight Day Masters follow the same rule, and the full table on this page lists every one.
Its pair
The Friend's partner is Rob Wealth (겁재 劫財). Both are the same element as the Day Master. The difference is polarity: the Friend matches yours, Rob Wealth is the opposite.
| Friend | Rob Wealth | |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity | Same as Day Master | Opposite |
| Image | A peer at your shoulder | A rival reaching for your share |
| Typical reading | Independence, cooperation | Drive, competition, risk-taking |
Most readers see the Friend as the steadier of the two. A Friend competes in the open; Rob Wealth is the one more likely to grab. Both can be valuable, depending on whether the Day Master needs support.
FAQ
What does Friend mean in a Saju chart?
Friend (비견 比肩) is any stem with the same element and polarity as your Day Master. It represents peers, siblings and self-reliance, and it strengthens the Day Master.
Is having many Friends in Saju bad?
Not by itself. Friends help a weak Day Master, but in a chart where the self is already strong, many Friends are read as stubbornness and competition over money.
What is the difference between Friend and Rob Wealth?
Both share your Day Master's element. The Friend has the same polarity and is read as a cooperative peer, while Rob Wealth has the opposite polarity and is read as a more competitive one.
