Eul-yu (乙酉) Day Pillar: Yin Wood Rooster, a Flower on a Blade
Eul-yu (乙酉, 을유) sets Eul, Yin Wood, over Yu, the Rooster branch. It is number 22 of the sixty-pillar cycle. Yu is mid-autumn and pure Yin Metal: polished, cold, exact. The traditional image is a flower growing on the edge of a blade, or, more practically, a vine trained along a steel trellis in October, beautiful because it has been cut and shaped. There is little in this pillar that is accidental.

Metal cuts Wood, so the branch controls the Day Master. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of Yu are Gyeong, Yang Metal, for 10 days as Direct Officer, and Sin, Yin Metal, for 20 days as Seven Killings, the main stem. Both hidden stems are Metal and both are authority stars in Ten God (십신 十神, sipsin) terms. One is orderly and legitimate, the other blunt and uncompromising.
Unlike Gap-sin (甲申), whose branch hides Water to soften the pressure, Eul-yu has nothing in its branch but Metal. On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Eul at Yu sits in Severance (절 絶, jeol) under the standard reverse count for Yin stems, the point of being cut off before a new start. Schools that count Yin stems forward would read it differently, but nearly all agree the Day Master is under pressure here. Water elsewhere in the chart, which turns Metal into nourishment, is traditionally the most valued support.
Character
Eul-yu is often refined, exact and self-disciplined. These people tend to hold high standards for themselves, notice small flaws, and present a calm, well-kept surface. Under pressure they can be remarkably composed, because pressure is their normal climate.
The combination of soft Wood and hard Metal shows in contrasts: gentle manners with a sharp mind, a delicate appearance with real toughness. Many are drawn to precise crafts, music, detailed design or anything that rewards fine control.
Blind spots: perfectionism, nervous tension and harsh self-criticism. Seven Killings can make them feel watched or judged even when they are not. They may also accept unreasonable demands from a boss or partner too long, then cut the tie abruptly, Severance style.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Seven Killings, with Direct Officer alongside. Traditionally this suggests an attractive, strong and possibly demanding partner, and a relationship that shapes Eul-yu as much as it supports it. In a woman's chart both stars are husband stars, which older texts read as an intense or complicated marriage theme. Modern readers tend to focus on balance: Eul-yu does best with a partner who is strong but fair, and with explicit agreements about who decides what.
Gyeong-jin (庚辰) is the heaven-and-earth combination pillar (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 乙 with 庚, 酉 with 辰. Sin-myo (辛卯) is the heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 辛 cuts 乙 and 卯 clashes 酉. These are classical notes for comparing charts, not predictions.
Work and money
Eul-yu thrives in precise, rule-bound or high-standard fields: finance and audit, law, editing, laboratory and technical roles, jewellery and fine crafts, musical performance, quality assurance and regulated industries. It works well inside institutions with clear expectations.
The branch holds no Wealth star, so money usually comes through position, title and reliability. Eul-yu is often careful with money and benefits from negotiating pay directly instead of waiting to be noticed.
How Eul-yu differs from the other Eul pillars
- Eul-myo (乙卯), its opposite branch, is pure Wood in Officialdom: free, sociable, unpruned. Eul-yu is the pruned version.
- Eul-sa (乙巳) carries authority only as a hidden minor Direct Officer and pushes back through Hurting Officer.
- Eul-hae (乙亥) has Direct Resource in its branch, the Water that Eul-yu has to find elsewhere.
- Eul-chuk (乙丑) has Sin Metal as Seven Killings too, but only as a 3-day trace under Indirect Wealth.
All six share the Eul Yin Wood Day Master. Eul-yu follows Gap-sin and precedes Byeong-sul (丙戌). Its branch animal is on the Rooster page.
Eul-yu in 2026–2030
- 2026 Byeong-o (丙午): Hurting Officer over Eating God. Fire melts Metal, so this output year eases pressure. O (Horse) is one of Eul-yu's two Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches, so effort may show results later.
- 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未): Eating God over Indirect Wealth. Mi (Goat) is the other Void branch; a relaxed, productive year with slower payoff.
- 2028 Mu-sin (戊申): Direct Wealth over Direct Officer. Steady roles and income.
- 2029 Gi-yu (己酉): Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings, on the same Rooster branch as the day pillar. Pressure doubles; good for proving competence, hard on rest.
- 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌): Direct Officer over Direct Wealth, and Gyeong combines with Eul. Formal commitments and recognition.
