The Officer Patron (천관귀인 天官貴人 cheongwan gwiin) is a noble star that tradition links to public office, rank and recognition within institutions. It is found from your Day Master and appears when a particular branch sits anywhere in your chart. Korean readers mention it most when a question turns to promotion or a career in an organization.

What it means

天官 literally means "heavenly official." In a society where the civil service was the main route to status, a star promising official favor carried real weight, and older manuals describe it as bringing appointment, salary and honor. It belongs to the same family as the Heavenly Noble, but its help is more specific: advancement through structures rather than help from individuals.

In a modern reading it suggests comfort with hierarchy and a knack for being noticed by the people who make decisions. That can fit government work, large companies, academia or any setting with titles and procedures. It says nothing about whether someone should pursue such a path, and plenty of people with the star prefer independent work.

How it is found

The lookup runs from the Day Master to one branch. If that branch appears as the year, month, day or hour branch, the chart has the Officer Patron in that pillar.

Worked example: a Gap 甲 Day Master's Officer Patron branch is Mi 未 (Goat). Someone with a Gap day stem born in a Goat year carries the star in the year pillar. For comparison, an Eul 乙 Day Master looks for Jin 辰 (Dragon), a Byeong 丙 Day Master for Sa 巳 (Snake), and an Im Yang Water Day Master for Sul 戌 (Dog).

The table for this star varies more between sources than most nobles do, partly because classical texts derive it from different reference points. Orienteller uses one consistent table, shown on this page, and does not merge alternatives. If another app reports a different branch for your Day Master, that is usually the reason.

How it shows up in a reading

Readers give the most weight to the Officer Patron when it agrees with the rest of the chart's career signals. In the language of the Ten Gods, those are the Direct Officer and Seven Killings, the stars of authority and responsibility. A chart with a clean, well-supported Direct Officer and an Officer Patron in the month pillar is the classic picture of a steady institutional career.

Placement matters. The month pillar is read as the workplace itself, so a month-branch placement is considered the most direct. A year placement suggests family ties to public service or an early start; a day-branch placement links status to a spouse or partnership; an hour placement suggests recognition later in a career.

A clash on the patron branch, such as Mi 未 clashed by Chuk 丑, is often read as advancement that comes with reshuffles or changes of employer. When a luck pillar brings the branch, readers describe that decade or year as a favorable window for applications, exams or promotions; see the luck pillars guide. FAQ

What does 천관귀인 mean for my career?

Tradition links it to rank, office and recognition in organizations. It suggests an affinity for structured careers, not a guaranteed promotion.

Is the Officer Patron the same as the Direct Officer?

No. The Direct Officer is one of the Ten Gods and is defined by element and polarity. The Officer Patron is a separate noble star defined by a lookup table.

Why do sources disagree about this star?

Classical texts give more than one rule for it. Orienteller uses a single table and states it on the page so you can compare.
