Byeong-in (丙寅) Day Pillar: Sunrise Over the Tiger's Forest
Byeong-in (丙寅) is Yang Fire sitting on In, the Wood Tiger. It is the third pair of the sixty-day cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja), following Eul-chuk (乙丑) and preceding Jeong-myo (丁卯). Its image is the first sun of spring breaking over a pine forest, while a tiger steps out of the trees into the light. Everything in the picture is beginning, and the forest is the fuel that keeps the sun climbing.
The image
Wood produces Fire, so the branch feeds the stem. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of 寅 are Mu (戊) Yang Earth for 7 days, Byeong (丙) Yang Fire for 7 days and Gap (甲) Yang Wood for 16 days. Seen from the Byeong Day Master (일간 日干, ilgan), Mu is the Eating God, Byeong is a Friend and Gap is the Indirect Resource. Gap is the main stem, so the branch as a whole reads as Indirect Resource: unconventional learning, intuition, protection that comes from an unusual source.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Byeong at 寅 is in Long Life (장생 長生, jangsaeng), the moment of birth. The fire has a living root here and keeps gaining strength. A chart already heavy in Wood and Fire can tip into excess.
There is a tension inside the branch. Gap (Wood) controls Mu (Earth), so the Indirect Resource sits on top of the Eating God. Classical texts call this 도식 (倒食, dosik), "overturned rice bowl": a mind so full of ideas and study that the plain act of producing can stall.
Character
The Byeong-in temperament is energetic, curious and quick to start. It tends to be optimistic in the way a sunrise is optimistic: today is new, so begin. These people often learn by absorbing whole systems at once, then teaching them back with warmth.
The pillar carries the Hall of Learning star (학당귀인 學堂貴人), a traditional sign of aptitude for study and scholarship, which fits the Long Life root. It also carries Red Glamour (홍염살 紅艶煞), a star of charm and personal magnetism that others notice even when the person does not try.
Blind spots: enthusiasm outruns follow-through, and the Indirect Resource can make them restless with routine instruction. They may collect courses, books and plans faster than they finish them.
Relationships
The day branch is the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung). With Indirect Resource there, the partner is traditionally pictured as someone who nurtures, advises or shelters, sometimes an older or unusual person, sometimes a partner whose care comes with strong opinions. Red Glamour adds attraction, so admirers are rarely lacking; steadiness is the thing to build.
As traditional notes only: Sin-hae (辛亥) is the harmony pillar, since 丙 and 辛 combine and 寅 and 亥 combine, a pairing called 천지합 (天地合, cheonjihap). Im-sin (壬申) is the clash pillar, with 壬 controlling 丙 and 申 clashing 寅, called 천극지충 (天剋地沖, cheongeuk jichung).
Work and money
Byeong-in suits fields where learning and launching overlap: teaching, research that reaches the public, product design, early-stage ventures, health and wellness education, media. The Friend in the branch means they work well with partners and co-founders. Money tends to come through credentials and expertise rather than trading. The main risk is spreading capital across too many new projects at once.
How Byeong-in differs from the other Byeong pillars
- Against Byeong-o (丙午): both are strong, but Byeong-o is the noon sun at Emperor, already at full power, while Byeong-in is the morning sun still rising, more teachable and less fixed.
- Against Byeong-ja (丙子): Byeong-ja sits on the Direct Officer in Conception, shaped by rules. Byeong-in sits on Resource and is shaped by mentors and ideas.
- Against Byeong-sin (丙申), its clash branch partner: Byeong-sin is in Sickness on Indirect Wealth and thinks in deals. Byeong-in thinks in lessons.
- Byeong-jin (丙辰) and Byeong-sul (丙戌) put Earth output under the sun; Byeong-in puts fuel there.
Byeong-in in 2026–2030
- 2026, Byeong-o (丙午): Friend stem, Rob Wealth branch. A year of more heat, confidence and competition, with peers on every side.
- 2027, Jeong-mi (丁未): Rob Wealth stem, Hurting Officer branch. Strong self-expression; shared money needs clear terms.
- 2028, Mu-sin (戊申): Eating God stem, Indirect Wealth branch, and 申 clashes the day branch 寅. The most eventful year of the five: output and income rise, while home, partnership or location may move.
- 2029, Gi-yu (己酉): Hurting Officer stem, Direct Wealth branch. Earning through skills you can show.
- 2030, Gyeong-sul (庚戌): Indirect Wealth stem, Eating God branch. 戌 is one of the Void branches here, so traditional readers expect its effects to feel lighter than they look.

FAQ
Why is Byeong-in considered a strong day pillar?
Byeong sits at Long Life on a Wood branch that feeds Fire, so the Day Master has its own root and a supply of Resource. The rest of the chart can still change the balance.
Which year in 2026–2030 is most active for Byeong-in?
2028, the Mu-sin (戊申) year, because 申 clashes the 寅 day branch while bringing the Eating God and Indirect Wealth. Traditionally this suggests change in home or partnership alongside new income.
What stars does Byeong-in carry?
It carries the Hall of Learning, a sign of aptitude for study, and Red Glamour, a sign of charm and attraction.
