Red Glamour (홍염살) in Saju and How It Differs From Peach Blossom

Red Glamour (홍염살 紅艷殺 hongyeomsal) is a star of personal allure: a magnetism that draws people in, often described as more private and intense than the public charm of Peach Blossom. It is found from your Day Master, so it describes something about your own presence. Korean readers have long grouped it with the harsher stars, but its modern reputation is close to a compliment.

What it means

紅艷 means "red and alluring." Older manuals used the star to warn about romance that runs ahead of judgment, and classified it among the inauspicious stars for that reason. The same manuals also describe a person with Red Glamour as expressive, sensitive to beauty and hard to ignore.

The difference people usually draw between the two romance stars is this. Peach Blossom is charm that works on a crowd: visibility, popularity, stage presence. Red Glamour is charm that works one-to-one: warmth, emotional depth and a quality that makes a single person pay attention. In modern practice that reads as an asset in creative, interpersonal and client-facing work. Korean practice still calls it double-edged, because intensity can complicate relationships if the chart lacks steadiness, and no single star decides that.

How it is found

The lookup runs from the Day Master to one branch. If that branch appears as the year, month, day or hour branch, the chart carries Red Glamour in that pillar.

Worked example: a Gap Yang Wood Day Master's Red Glamour branch is O 午 (Horse). So the Gap-o day pillar carries it on the day branch, the spouse palace, and a Gap person born in a Horse year carries it in the year pillar. Other pairs from the table: Byeong 丙 takes In 寅 (Tiger), Gyeong 庚 takes Sul 戌 (Dog), Sin 辛 takes Yu 酉 (Rooster), and Im 壬 takes Ja 子 (Rat).

Some pairings appear in two places: Mu 戊 and Gi 己 both take Jin 辰 (Dragon), and Eul 乙 and Gye 癸 both take Sin 申 (Monkey). Variant tables exist in older literature, particularly for the Earth stems, and Orienteller uses the single table shown on this page.

How it shows up in a reading

Since Red Glamour starts from the Day Master, the day branch is its most personal placement. There it is read as a charismatic self and an emotionally rich partnership. In the month pillar it suggests charm that helps at work; in the hour pillar, an allure that lasts or grows with age; in the year pillar, a family style that is warm and expressive.

Readers pay attention to combinations. When Red Glamour and Peach Blossom both appear, Korean readers describe very strong social and romantic pull, and they look to the rest of the chart for restraint, usually the Officer stars in the Ten Gods. When the Red Glamour branch is clashed, relationships are read as intense with more turning points. A harmony on the branch is read as steadier attraction.

The Golden Carriage is another star readers mention in relationship questions, though it leans toward comfort rather than allure. As always, the stars add color to a reading built on the elements and Ten Gods. Find your branches with the free day pillar calculator and see more terms in the glossary.
