The Tiger (寅, In) in Korean Saju: Meaning, Years and Matches
The Tiger is In (인 寅), the third Earthly Branch (지지 地支 jiji) of Korean Saju (사주) and the one that starts the Saju year. It is Yang Wood: early spring, sap rising, the first push of growth while the air is still cold. Tiger years include 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 and 2022. Because the Tiger month opens at Ipchun, this branch is also the clearest place to see why Saju years do not follow Lunar New Year.
The branch behind the animal
In carries Wood with Yang polarity. Its month begins with Ipchun (입춘 立春, Start of Spring) around February 4 and runs to about March 5. In the Saju calendar this is month one, so the year pillar and the month pillar both change on the same day. Its two-hour block is 03:00 to 05:00, the hour before dawn.
The branch stores three hidden stems (지장간 支藏干 jijanggan):
- Mu (戊) Yang Earth, 7 days
- Byeong (丙) Yang Fire, 7 days
- Gap (甲) Yang Wood, 16 days, the main qi
The Mu layer is a carry-over from the Earth of late winter. Byeong Fire is the seed of the coming warmth, and it is the reason In belongs to the Fire triple frame even though it is a Wood branch. Gap Wood is the body of the branch. A useful picture is a young tree with a small fire lit at its base: In feeds Fire as much as it grows Wood. For a full account of how Wood feeds Fire, see the Five Elements guide.
As your year branch, and as your day branch
In Korea, your tti (띠) is the animal of your year pillar, and "I'm a Tiger" refers to the year branch. A reader treats the year branch as the outer layer of a chart: family line, upbringing, and the impression you make in groups and institutions. Tiger in the year is traditionally linked with boldness and an independent streak. It is a broad brush, shared by everyone born between one Ipchun and the next.
The day branch (일지 日支 ilji) sits under your Day Master and is read as the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮), the seat of partnership and private life. An In day branch puts an active, forward-moving energy right next to the self. Readers often describe it as restless at home, someone who needs a partner with their own projects. As always, the Day Master on top changes the meaning: In is a strong root for a Wood day, a source of fuel for a Fire day, and pressure for an Earth day.
Harmony, triple frame and clash
The classical relationships for In are below. They describe how branches combine and collide inside a chart, and none of them decides whether two people will get along.
| Type | With | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Six harmony (육합 六合 yukhap) | Hae 亥 Pig | Water feeding Wood; usually read as a supportive bond |
| Triple frame (삼합 三合 samhap) | O 午 Horse and Sul 戌 Dog | In, O and Sul build a Fire frame; In is where that Fire is born |
| Clash (충 沖 chung) | Sin 申 Monkey | Wood meets Metal head-on across the circle |
The Tiger and Monkey clash is linked with travel and change in Korean practice. Both In and Sin are "starting" branches of their seasons, so their clash is often read as movement: moving house, changing roles, long trips. That can be welcome or tiring depending on the rest of the chart.
Why your Saju year may differ from your zodiac year
Since the Tiger month and the Saju year both begin at Ipchun, a birth just before that point belongs to the old year, and one just after belongs to the new one, regardless of the lunar calendar.
Consider a baby born on February 10, 2010. Ipchun had passed six days earlier, so the Saju year pillar is Gyeong-in (庚寅), a Tiger. Lunar New Year that year fell on February 14, which means a popular zodiac chart would still list this child as an Ox from the Gi-chuk (己丑) year of 2009. Same child, two different animals, and in Saju only the solar-term date counts.
The five Tiger day pillars
In is Yang, so it combines only with the Yang stems. The five Tiger day pillars are Gap-in (甲寅), Byeong-in (丙寅), Mu-in (戊寅), Gyeong-in (庚寅) and Im-in (壬寅). Gap-in is the only one where stem and branch are the same element.
FAQ
Why does the Saju year start with the Tiger and not the Rat?
The branch order starts with the Rat, but the Saju calendar starts the year at Ipchun, the beginning of spring. The month that Ipchun opens is In, so the Tiger month is month one.
Which years are Tiger years?
Tiger years include 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 and 2022, and the next is 2034. Each starts at Ipchun around February 4.
Who is the Tiger's best match in Saju?
Traditionally In forms a six harmony with the Pig and a Fire triple frame with the Horse and Dog, and it clashes with the Monkey. These are tendencies in how charts interact, and real compatibility needs both full charts.
