Eul-chuk (乙丑) Day Pillar: Yin Wood Ox and the Winter Seedling
Eul-chuk (乙丑, 을축) is the day pillar of Eul, Yin Wood, over Chuk, the Ox branch. It is number 2 of the sixty, right after Gap-ja. Chuk is the deepest cold of the year, frozen earth in the last month before spring. The image is winter barley: a low green shoot in a frosted field, barely moving for weeks, yet alive and rooted when everything taller has died back. Eul-chuk is about outlasting.
The image
Wood controls Earth, so the branch is the Day Master's Wealth. The main hidden stem (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of Chuk is Gi, Yin Earth, for 18 days, and from Eul it counts as Indirect Wealth in Ten God (십신 十神, sipsin) terms. Chuk also stores Gye, Yin Water, for 9 days as Indirect Resource, and Sin, Yin Metal, for 3 days as Seven Killings.
So there is moisture for the roots (Gye) and a thin blade of pressure (Sin), held inside cold soil that the plant can claim as its own. On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Eul at Chuk is in Decline (쇠 衰, soe) in the standard scheme, where Yin stems run the cycle backwards. Some schools apply the Yang sequence to Yin stems as well and would place it differently; this site follows the standard reverse count. Decline describes a mature, conserving phase: not vigorous, but experienced and economical.
Character
Eul-chuk tends to be patient, thrifty and stubborn in the most useful sense. These people are rarely the first to make noise and often the last to leave. They notice cost, keep receipts, and dislike waste of time or money.
The Ox branch brings endurance and methodical work. The hidden Indirect Resource adds unusual interests and an independent way of learning; many Eul-chuk people study something niche in depth. The small Seven Killings gives an inner discipline and, at times, a sense of being under quiet threat that keeps them cautious.
Blind spots: pessimism, saving for a rainy day that never ends, and resistance to change even when spring has clearly arrived. They can be slow to forgive because they remember everything. A useful habit is scheduling deliberate risks, small and reversible, so the shoot actually grows when the ground thaws.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Indirect Wealth. Traditionally this reads as a practical, hardworking partner and a relationship built around a shared household, a business or long-term financial goals. In a man's chart Wealth is the classical wife star. Eul-chuk is typically loyal and undramatic in love, showing care through reliability rather than declarations.
Gyeong-ja (庚子) is Eul-chuk's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 乙 combines with 庚, 丑 with 子. Sin-mi (辛未) is its heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 辛 cuts 乙 and 未 clashes 丑. These are classical reference points, not forecasts.
Work and money
Eul-chuk fits careers that reward slow accumulation and care: accounting and bookkeeping, agriculture and food, logistics and warehousing, research archives, quality control, conservation, and small long-running businesses. They are good stewards of other people's assets.
Money tends to grow steadily through saving and modest investing. Eul-chuk is unlikely to gamble, which protects it, but it can also miss obvious opportunities. The traditional advice is to let some capital work.
How Eul-chuk differs from the other Eul pillars
- Eul-mi (乙未) is its opposite branch and also has Gi Earth as Indirect Wealth, but Mi is summer earth with Fire inside. Eul-mi is warm and expressive; Eul-chuk is cold and conserving.
- Eul-myo (乙卯) is pure Wood in Officialdom, far stronger in self and weaker in assets.
- Eul-hae (乙亥) also sits in winter, but on Water as Direct Resource, so it is more receptive and less possessive.
- Eul-yu (乙酉) carries Seven Killings as the main branch god, while in Eul-chuk Sin Metal is only a 3-day trace.
All six share the Eul Yin Wood Day Master. In the cycle, Eul-chuk follows Gap-ja (甲子) and precedes Byeong-in (丙寅). Its animal is described on the Ox page.
Eul-chuk in 2026–2030
2026, Byeong-o (丙午), sets Hurting Officer over Eating God, a warm, talkative year that thaws the frozen field. 2027, Jeong-mi (丁未), puts Eating God over Indirect Wealth, and the Goat branch clashes the Ox: the earth of the spouse palace is turned over, which tradition reads as change in home, property or partnership arrangements.
2028, Mu-sin (戊申), brings Direct Wealth over Direct Officer, steady and structured. 2029, Gi-yu (己酉), brings Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings, profitable but demanding. 2030, Gyeong-sul (庚戌), places Direct Officer over Direct Wealth, and the Gyeong stem combines with the Eul Day Master. Sul (Dog) is one of Eul-chuk's Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches, together with Hae (Pig), so many readers would expect that year's commitments to take longer to bear fruit.

FAQ
Is Eul-chuk a weak day pillar?
Eul at Chuk is in Decline and the branch is Earth, so the Day Master is not strong by itself. It does have Gye Water hidden for nourishment and is known for endurance rather than force.
What is Eul-chuk like as a spouse?
With Indirect Wealth in the spouse palace, Eul-chuk is traditionally a practical, loyal partner who shows care through providing and planning.
What does 乙丑 mean in Saju?
乙丑 is Yin Wood over the Ox, a cold winter Earth branch. It is pillar 2 of the sixty and pictures a small plant holding on under frost until spring.

The Ox branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Eul Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
