Byeong-ja (丙子) places Byeong, the Yang Fire Day Master, over Ja, the Water Rat. It is the 13th pair in the sixty-day cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip gapja), between Eul-hae (乙亥) and Jeong-chuk (丁丑). Picture a low winter sun over a deep lake: the light crosses the whole surface, yet the water underneath stays cold and keeps its own counsel. The pillar describes a warm, visible person standing on ground that asks for discipline.

The image

Water controls Fire, so here the branch presses on the stem instead of feeding it. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of 子 are Im (壬) Yang Water for 10 days and Gye (癸) Yin Water for 20 days. For a Byeong Day Master (일간 日干, ilgan), Im is the Seven Killings and Gye is the Direct Officer. Both belong to the Officer family: rules, expectations, outside judgment. Gye is the main hidden stem, so the branch counts as Direct Officer and the self sits on a seat of obligation.

On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Byeong at 子 is in Conception (태 胎, tae). The fire is an embryo: alive, full of potential, with no root in the branch. With Wood or more Fire elsewhere in the chart, the Water becomes a clear structure for the sun to shine across; without them, it can feel like constant evaluation.

The Void branches (공망 空亡, gongmang) are Sin 申 Monkey and Yu 酉 Rooster, both Metal, the Wealth element for Byeong. The Void entry explains how readers soften what those branches bring.

Character

Byeong-ja people often pair an open, friendly manner with a strict private sense of what is proper. The sun gives them an easy public face; the Officer water gives them a conscience that keeps score, mostly of themselves. They tend to be courteous, reliable and alert to hierarchy.

Their strengths are composure inside rules, fairness, and the ability to represent a group gracefully. Many grow steadier with age.

The blind spots come from the same seat. With the Officer right under the self, criticism lands harder than it should, and the cheerful surface can hide fatigue. The short Seven Killings phase adds bursts of sharp pressure that unsettle them more than long routine does.

Relationships

The day branch is traditionally the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung), and in Byeong-ja it holds the Direct Officer. Classical texts read the Officer as the husband star in a woman's chart and as duty and order in a man's, so the pillar is often described as drawn to partners with steadiness, manners and some standing. The upside is clear commitment; the risk is a home that runs on duty more than ease.

Two traditional notes. Sin-chuk (辛丑) is the harmony pillar: 丙 combines with 辛 and 子 with 丑, called 천지합 (天地合, cheonjihap), "heaven and earth uniting". Im-o (壬午) is the clash pillar: 壬 controls 丙 while 午 clashes 子, called 천극지충 (天剋地沖, cheongeuk jichung).

Work and money

The Officer seat suits work with visible structure: public administration, law and compliance, large hospitals or schools, and corporate roles where titles mean something. Byeong-ja tends to do well as the trusted public face of an institution. Wealth is not stored in this branch, so income usually follows rank and reputation rather than speculation.

FAQ

Is Byeong-ja a weak day pillar?

Byeong at 子 is in the Conception stage and sits on Water, which controls Fire, so on its own it is usually counted as lacking root. Whether the whole chart is weak depends on the other seven characters, especially Wood and Fire.

What does the Direct Officer in the Byeong-ja spouse palace mean?

It points to a partnership built on commitment, propriety and clear roles. Traditional texts link it to a reliable partner, with the caution that duty can crowd out warmth.

Why does 2026 matter for Byeong-ja people?

The 2026 year pillar is Byeong-o (丙午), and its 午 branch clashes the 子 day branch. Traditionally that marks change around home, partnership or daily routine rather than a fixed event.

Hidden stems in the branch

The Rat branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Byeong Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
