Gyeong-in (庚寅) Day Pillar: The Axe in the Spring Forest
Gyeong-in (庚寅, 경인) is the day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju) formed by Gyeong 庚, the Yang Metal Day Master, standing on In 寅, the Tiger. It is number 27 in the sixty-pillar cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip-gapja). The picture is an axe carried into a pine forest at the start of spring. There is more timber than one blade could ever fell, and the axe has work in every direction and no whetstone in sight.

Metal controls Wood, so the stem dominates its branch, and what Metal controls is its Wealth. Inside the branch the story is more mixed. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) are:
- Mu 戊, Yang Earth, 7 days: Indirect Resource, a thin seam of support.
- Byeong 丙, Yang Fire, 7 days: Seven Killings, the pressure star that attacks Gyeong directly.
- Gap 甲, Yang Wood, 16 days: Indirect Wealth, the main hidden stem, so the branch as a whole reads as Indirect Wealth.
Fire is born in the Tiger, which means the force that melts Metal is growing quietly under Gyeong's feet. On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gyeong on In sits at Severance (절 絶, jeol), the point where a stem is cut off from its own root. The practical meaning is that Gyeong-in has big opportunities underfoot and little personal reserve to hold them. Older texts call this "wealth heavy, self weak" (재다신약 財多身弱, jaeda-sinyak).
The Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches for this pillar are the Horse (午) and the Goat (未).
Character
Gyeong-in is the most restless of the Gyeong pillars. Where other Yang Metal types wait to be tested, this one goes looking for the test. People with this pillar often start things: a side business at twenty, a move abroad. They read situations for what can be gained and act quickly.
Their strengths are nerve, speed and a talent for spotting value others overlook. They also tend to be practically generous. The blind spots are overreach and fatigue. Taking on every tree in the forest leaves the blade dull, and the hidden Seven Killings can turn a bold plan into a fight with a rival or an authority. A useful habit is finishing one harvest before walking deeper into the woods.
Relationships
The day branch is the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung). Here it holds Indirect Wealth. In traditional rules for men, Wealth stands for the wife, so this palace is read as a lively, outgoing partner and a relationship with plenty of movement in it. For anyone, Gyeong-in is drawn to energetic, sociable people and enjoys a partnership that feels like a shared project. The caution is time: a partner can feel like one more opportunity being managed alongside the others.
Traditional pairing notes: Gyeong-in's heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap) is Eul-hae (乙亥), with 乙 combining 庚 and 亥 combining 寅. Its "heaven strikes, earth clashes" partner (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung) is Byeong-sin (丙申). These are talking points in compatibility readings, not forecasts.
Work and money
Indirect Wealth is traditionally the star of irregular, larger and less predictable income: commissions, trading, sales, projects, property, ventures. Gyeong-in thrives with targets and upside: business development, procurement, construction, field sales or running a small company.
The money pattern can be lumpy, and the Severance stage suggests building reserves deliberately. A partner who brings structure makes a noticeable difference.
How Gyeong-in differs from the other Gyeong pillars
Gyeong-in and Gyeong-sin (庚申) clash branch to branch, and their temperaments are opposite: Gyeong-sin stands on its own Metal at Officialdom and relies on itself, while Gyeong-in stands on Wood at Severance and relies on momentum. Gyeong-o (庚午) carries Direct Officer in its branch and cares about doing things properly; Gyeong-in cares about doing them first. Gyeong-ja (庚子) has a Hurting Officer branch and spends its energy on words and critique, where Gyeong-in spends it on deals. Gyeong-sul (庚戌) shares Gyeong-in's appetite for action but sits on dry Earth with Indirect Resource beneath it, which gives it more endurance.
Gyeong-in in 2026–2030
The year 2026 (Byeong-o 丙午) brings Seven Killings over Direct Officer, so outside pressure, rivals and formal obligations are prominent for a stem that already carries hidden Fire. In 2027 (Jeong-mi 丁未) the gods are Direct Officer over Direct Resource, a calmer, more structured year for building credentials. The year 2028 (Mu-sin 戊申) sets Indirect Resource over Friend and its Monkey branch clashes the Tiger in the spouse palace, often read as movement at home or a rethink of partnerships. In 2029 (Gi-yu 己酉) Direct Resource sits over Rob Wealth, useful support but shared money needs care. The year 2030 (Gyeong-sul 庚戌) brings Friend over Indirect Resource and tends to strengthen a pillar that usually runs low on reserves.
FAQ
Is Gyeong-in good with money?
Gyeong-in sits on an Indirect Wealth branch, so it tends to see opportunities and act on them. The same pillar sits at Severance, which is why traditional readers advise building savings and structure so that gains are kept.
Why is Severance not a bad sign for Gyeong-in?
Severance is the stage just before Conception in the twelve-stage cycle, so it describes being cut off from one's own root and ready to start again. It shows where a Day Master draws its strength from, not an outcome.
How do I check whether I am a Gyeong-in day pillar?
Your day pillar depends on your exact birth date and, near midnight, on which day boundary your school uses. The free day pillar calculator finds it from your birth details.
