Gap-sul (甲戌) Day Pillar in Korean Saju: Yang Wood on the Autumn Dog
Gap-sul (甲戌, 갑술) is the day pillar of Gap, Yang Wood, above Sul, the Dog branch. It is number 11 of the sixty. Sul closes autumn: dry, packed Earth that holds the last embers of summer and the hard edge of Metal. Think of a single oak on a dry hilltop in late October, leaves thinning, roots working into stony ground that still holds warmth.

Wood controls Earth, so the branch is the Day Master's Wealth. The main hidden stem (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of Sul is Mu, Yang Earth, for 18 days, which is Indirect Wealth in Ten God (십신 十神, sipsin) terms. Alongside it are Sin, Yin Metal, for 9 days as Direct Officer, and Jeong, Yin Fire, for 3 days as Hurting Officer.
Those two smaller stems pull against each other. Direct Officer is rules and reputation; Hurting Officer is the urge to criticise rules. Fire melts Metal, so inside Sul there is a small, permanent argument between conforming and objecting.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gap at Sul is in Nurture (양 養, yang): the child in the womb, fed and protected, preparing to be born. The Day Master is not strong here, since no Wood root sits in Sul, but Nurture implies being looked after and having time. Many readers see Gap-sul as a late bloomer whose assets accumulate quietly.
Character
Gap-sul tends to be practical, loyal and patient. These people like to own things outright, whether property, skills or a reputation, and they guard what they have built. The Dog branch adds steadfastness: once they commit to a person or cause, they stay.
They are often more reserved than other Gap types. The ambitious straight-up energy of Gap is tempered by dry ground, so Gap-sul plans before it speaks and prefers proof to promises.
Blind spots: holding on too tightly to money, positions or old grievances; difficulty asking for nourishment when the ground is dry; and the inner Officer-versus-Hurting-Officer tension, which can come out as sudden, sharp criticism after a long period of silent compliance.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Indirect Wealth, traditionally read as a capable, practical partner and a relationship tied up with shared property or household management. In a man's chart, Wealth is the classical wife star.
Gap-sul also carries the Yin-Yang Mismatch star (음양차착 陰陽差錯, eumyang chachak). Older texts connected it with friction involving in-laws or with partners whose timing or backgrounds did not line up. Contemporary readers usually treat it as a prompt to discuss family expectations early, not as a judgement on any marriage, and schools differ on how much weight it deserves.
Gi-myo (己卯) is the heaven-and-earth combination pillar (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 甲 with 己, 戌 with 卯. Gyeong-jin (庚辰) is the heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 庚 cuts 甲 and 辰 clashes 戌.
Work and money
Gap-sul is well suited to managing assets and systems: property, facility management, operations, accounting, insurance, procurement, public administration and family business. The hidden Direct Officer adds comfort with procedure, and the hidden Hurting Officer makes them good at finding flaws in it.
Money is a strong theme and tends to grow through holding, not flipping. The traditional advice is to keep some liquidity.
How Gap-sul differs from the other Gap pillars
- Gap-jin (甲辰) is its opposite branch and shares Indirect Wealth as the main branch god, but Jin is wet spring soil with Wood and Water hidden. Gap-jin expands; Gap-sul consolidates.
- Gap-o (甲午) also has hidden Jeong Fire as Hurting Officer, but there it is the main stem and the voice is loud. In Gap-sul it is a 3-day undertone.
- Gap-ja (甲子) is fed by Resource; Gap-sul has none in its branch and must find nourishment elsewhere.
- Gap-in (甲寅) has its own root in Officialdom, while Gap-sul is still in Nurture.
Gap-sul belongs to the Gap Yang Wood Day Master family, sits between Gye-yu (癸酉) and Eul-hae (乙亥) in the cycle, and its branch animal is on the Dog page.
Gap-sul in 2026–2030
- 2026 Byeong-o (丙午): Eating God over Hurting Officer. Output and self-expression come forward.
- 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未): Hurting Officer over Direct Wealth. Practical earnings from skills.
- 2028 Mu-sin (戊申): Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings. Sin (Monkey) is one of Gap-sul's two Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches, so pressure may feel less concrete and returns may be delayed.
- 2029 Gi-yu (己酉): Direct Wealth over Direct Officer, and the stem combines with Gap. Yu (Rooster) is the other Void branch: formal commitments are favoured, with patience on results.
- 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌): Seven Killings over Indirect Wealth, on the same Dog branch as the day pillar. Property and household questions come into focus under firm external demands.
