Gyeong-ja (庚子, 경자) is the day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju) that puts Gyeong 庚, the Yang Metal Day Master, over Ja 子, the Rat. It is number 37 of the sixty pillars (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip-gapja), the cycle of stem-and-branch pairs used to name every day. Picture an axe head left in a mountain stream in midwinter. The water is cold enough to make the iron ring and clear enough to show every edge. That brightness, and its chill, runs through this pillar.

The image

Metal produces Water, so the stem feeds its own branch and gets nothing back. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of Ja are Im 壬, Yang Water, for 10 days and Gye 癸, Yin Water, for 20 days. From a Gyeong Day Master, Im (壬) is the Eating God. Gye (癸) is the Hurting Officer; as the main hidden stem it makes the branch read as Hurting Officer: quick, critical output that questions rules.

Classical texts call this pairing 금수상관 (金水傷官, geumsu-sanggwan, "Metal-Water Hurting Officer") and connect it with a clean, bright intelligence. The cost shows in the life stage. On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gyeong on Ja sits at Death (사 死, sa). The word names a phase in which the stem's own force is spent, not an event. The rest of the chart, especially Earth and Metal, decides how much stamina stands behind the sharp mind.

The pillar's Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are the Dragon (辰) and the Snake (巳).

Character

Gyeong-ja people tend to see the flaw in an argument before anyone else at the table, and to say so. Hurting Officer under a blunt Yang Metal stem gives a cooler, more verbal style than most Gyeong pillars: less shove, more cut. Many are strong writers, editors or critics, with a dry humour.

Strengths include clarity under pressure and the ability to explain hard ideas in plain words. The blind spots come from the same place. Criticism can arrive before warmth, and a Day Master at the Death stage can run out of energy after a burst of output, then withdraw. People around them can mistake that quiet for coldness.

Relationships

The day branch is the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung), traditionally linked to a partner and home life. Here it holds the Hurting Officer. In older rules for women's charts, the Officer stars stand for the husband and the Hurting Officer attacks the Direct Officer, so classical texts call this palace demanding. A more useful reading for anyone: Gyeong-ja wants a partner who can take honest commentary and return it, and grows bored with someone who only agrees.

Two traditional notes. The heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap) partner is Eul-chuk (乙丑), where 乙 combines with 庚 and 丑 combines with 子. The "heaven strikes, earth clashes" partner (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung) is Byeong-o (丙午), where Fire attacks Metal and the Horse clashes with the Rat. These are compatibility talking points, not verdicts.

Work and money

Eating God and Hurting Officer are the output stars: what a person makes, says and performs. Gyeong-ja suits work where precise judgement is the product: analysis, law, editing, audit, investigative reporting, code review.

In Ten God logic output produces Wealth, so money tends to follow skill shown in public. The weak spot is rigid hierarchy and managers who dislike being corrected. Gyeong-ja often does better as the specialist people call in.

FAQ

Is Gyeong-ja a weak day pillar?

On its own branch Gyeong sits at the Death stage and the Rat drains Metal into Water, so the pillar on its own leans weak. Whether the whole chart is weak depends on the month branch and the other pillars, especially how much Earth and Metal they hold.

What does Hurting Officer in the spouse palace mean for Gyeong-ja?

It points to a relationship style built on frank talk and mental stimulation. Classical texts read it as friction with authority and, in women's charts, with a husband; modern readers treat it as a need for a partner who welcomes candour.

How do I find out if my day pillar is Gyeong-ja?

The day pillar comes from your birth date in the sexagenary calendar, and schools differ on whether the day turns at midnight or at 11 pm. The free day pillar calculator works it out from your birth details.

Hidden stems in the branch

The Rat branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Gyeong Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.
