The Ox (丑, Chuk) in Saju: Years, Hidden Stems and Compatibility
In Korean Saju (사주), the Ox is Chuk (축 丑), the second of the twelve Earthly Branches (지지 地支 jiji). It is Yin Earth, and it belongs to the last stretch of winter, when the ground is frozen hard but still holding everything that will grow in spring. Ox years include 1985, 1997, 2009 and 2021. Whether you meet Chuk as your year animal or as the branch under your Day Master, the key idea is storage: Chuk keeps things.
The branch behind the animal
Chuk is Earth with Yin polarity. Its solar month starts with Sohan (소한 小寒, Minor Cold) around January 6 and ends about February 3, just before the new Saju year begins. That makes it the twelfth and final month of the cycle. Its two-hour block is 01:00 to 03:00, the dead of night.
The four Earth branches, Chuk, Jin, Mi and Sul, each close a season. Chuk closes winter, so it is cold, damp Earth rather than the dry warm Earth of summer. Its hidden stems (지장간 支藏干 jijanggan) show that layering clearly:
| Hidden stem | Element | Days |
|---|---|---|
| Gye 癸 | Yin Water | 9 |
| Sin 辛 | Yin Metal | 3 |
| Gi 己 | Yin Earth | 18, main qi |
The first nine days still carry winter's Water. A short Metal layer follows, a remnant that links Chuk to the Metal frame described below. Then Gi Earth takes over as the branch's main body. A reader who sees Chuk in a chart is therefore looking at three elements at once, and whether the Water or the Metal inside it "comes out" depends on what else the chart contains. The Five Elements guide explains how those interactions are weighed.
As your year branch, and as your day branch
Your tti (띠), the animal people mean when they say "I'm an Ox", is the branch of your year pillar. Korean readers look at the year branch for family roots, the household you grew up in and how you come across in society. Chuk in that position is traditionally associated with patience, endurance and a steady, unshowy reputation. Remember that it is shared by everyone born in the same Saju year, so it says more about a cohort than about you personally.
The day branch (일지 日支 ilji), under your Day Master, is the spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮). It describes how you settle into partnership and what kind of home life feels secure. A Chuk day branch is a quiet, reserved base. Because it stores Water and Metal, readers often say people with this day branch hold more inside than they show.
Harmony, triple frame and clash
These are the traditional links for Chuk. They describe how branches interact in a chart, and they are not compatibility guarantees.
- Six harmony (육합 六合 yukhap) with Ja 子 Rat. The Rat and Ox are the classic harmonious pair, the first two branches of the cycle.
- Triple frame (삼합 三合 samhap) with Sa 巳 Snake and Yu 酉 Rooster. Snake, Rooster and Ox form a Metal frame. Chuk is the frame's storehouse, which is why it keeps a Sin Metal layer inside.
- Clash (충 沖 chung) with Mi 未 Goat. Ox and Goat sit opposite each other: cold winter Earth against hot summer Earth. Earth-to-Earth clashes are often read as disputes over property, family matters or obligations rather than sudden upheaval.
Why your Saju year may differ from your zodiac year
The Saju year begins at Ipchun (입춘 立春), the start of spring around February 4. Lunar New Year can fall anywhere from late January to mid-February, so the two calendars disagree for a few weeks most years.
A child born on February 8, 2021 shows the gap. Lunar New Year in 2021 did not arrive until February 12, so a popular zodiac chart calls this child a Rat, from the Gyeong-ja (庚子) year of 2020. Ipchun had already passed, though, so the Saju year pillar is Sin-chuk (辛丑), an Ox. The reverse happens too: anyone born in January belongs to the previous Saju year, which is why a January birthday so often lands in a Chuk month at the tail end of the old year.
The five Ox day pillars
Chuk is Yin, so it pairs only with the five Yin stems. The Ox day pillars are Eul-chuk (乙丑), Jeong-chuk (丁丑), Gi-chuk (己丑), Sin-chuk (辛丑) and Gye-chuk (癸丑). Each page reads this cold storehouse of Earth from the point of view of a different Day Master.
FAQ
Which years are Ox years?
Ox years in Saju include 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009 and 2021, with 2033 next. Each begins at Ipchun around February 4.
What is hidden inside the Ox branch?
Chuk stores Gye (癸) Yin Water for 9 days, Sin (辛) Yin Metal for 3 days and Gi (己) Yin Earth for 18 days. Gi is the main qi, which is why Chuk counts as Earth.
Is the Ox compatible with the Goat?
Chuk and Mi form a traditional clash, and Chuk's harmony partner is the Rat. A clash points to friction in the chart, but compatibility depends on both full charts, not on one pair of animals.
