Sin-chuk (辛丑, 신축) is the day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju) that places Sin 辛, the Yin Metal Day Master, over Chuk 丑, the Ox. It is number 38 of the sixty-pillar cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip-gapja), the day right after Gyeong-ja. Yin Metal is finished metal: a ring, a needle, a coin, a cut stone. Here it lies in a winter field, a silver ring dropped in frozen farmland. The ground keeps it safe, and out of sight until someone digs.

The image

The Ox is cold, wet earth from the deepest part of winter, and it is the storehouse (고 庫, go) of Metal. Earth produces Metal, so the branch supports its stem. The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) are Gye 癸 Yin Water for 9 days, Sin 辛 Yin Metal for 3 days and Gi 己 Yin Earth for 18 days.

From a Sin Day Master, Gi (己) is Indirect Resource, and as the main hidden stem it gives the branch its Ten God. Gye (癸) is the Eating God, a quiet channel of output and pleasure. The small Sin (辛) is a Friend, a second piece of the same jewellery in the store.

Classical readers note one tension inside the branch. Indirect Resource sitting beside Eating God forms a pattern called 도식 (倒食, dosik, "the overturned rice bowl"), where self-taught, inward thinking can block easy enjoyment and expression. It is a tendency to watch for, and the Water in the Ox softens it.

On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Sin on Chuk is at Nurture (양 養, yang), the child carried before birth. Sin uses the reversed cycle taught for Yin stems in most Korean schools; a minority apply the Yang sequence to all stems, which would give a different stage. Under the standard reading, Nurture describes a Day Master that is protected and developing slowly, with support that matures over time.

The Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are the Dragon (辰) and the Snake (巳).

Character

Sin-chuk tends to be patient, private and exacting. People with this pillar often appear calm and unassuming, then turn out to have strong opinions and very high standards for their own work. They keep things, from documents to loyalties.

Their strengths are perseverance, depth of thought and a knack for research, restoration and quality control. They notice small flaws and fix them quietly. The blind spots are pessimism, overthinking and a reluctance to share unfinished work. The frozen-field image fits: much of Sin-chuk's value is underground, and it may need a push, or a warm season, to bring it up.

Relationships

The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Indirect Resource. Traditional readers see a partner who is thoughtful, perhaps older in manner, and protective, or a home that serves as a private refuge. Sin-chuk tends to want a calm, reliable relationship and does not enjoy drama. The caution is emotional distance: Indirect Resource can turn a household into two people reading in separate rooms.

Traditional pairings: the heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap) partner is Byeong-ja (丙子), where 丙 combines with 辛 and 子 combines with 丑. The "heaven strikes, earth clashes" partner (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung) is Jeong-mi (丁未). These are discussion points, not outcomes.

Work and money

Sin-chuk does well in work that values care and accuracy over speed: archives, accounting, quality assurance, conservation, laboratory work, pharmacy, editing, specialised crafts, data cleaning, and long-term research. Indirect Resource favours unusual expertise and certification in narrow fields.

As a Metal storehouse, the Ox is traditionally associated with saving. Many Sin-chuk people build money slowly through thrift and steady income rather than risk. The risk is hoarding effort as well as cash, staying in a safe job long after the skills have outgrown it.

FAQ

What is the "overturned rice bowl" in Sin-chuk?

It is a classical name for Indirect Resource meeting the Eating God, both of which sit inside the Ox for a Sin Day Master. It describes a tendency for overthinking to block enjoyment and expression, not a fixed result.

Is Sin-chuk a strong day pillar?

The Ox is the storehouse of Metal and supports Sin, and the stage is Nurture, so the pillar has steady backing. The whole chart, especially the month branch, decides overall strength.
