Eul-sa (乙巳) Day Pillar: Yin Wood Snake, a Flower in Early Summer Sun
Eul-sa (乙巳, 을사) places Eul, Yin Wood, over Sa, the Snake branch. It is number 42 of the sixty-pillar cycle. Sa is the start of summer, bright Yang Fire with Metal forming inside it. The image is a climbing rose on a sunny wall in May: every bud open, the colour visible from the street, the plant pouring its energy into display. It is beautiful and it is spending.

Wood feeds Fire, so the branch is the Day Master's output. Sa's main hidden stem (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) is Byeong, Yang Fire, for 16 days, which from Eul is Hurting Officer in Ten God (십신 十神, sipsin) terms. Two smaller stems sit with it: Mu, Yang Earth, for 7 days as Direct Wealth, and Gyeong, Yang Metal, for 7 days as Direct Officer.
The Gyeong is worth noticing. Eul and Gyeong form a classic stem combination, so Eul-sa carries a hidden attraction to structure, rank and a formal partner inside an otherwise free-spirited branch. Fire also produces Earth, so Hurting Officer leads naturally to Direct Wealth.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Eul at Sa is in Bathing (목욕 沐浴, mogyok) under the standard reverse count for Yin stems. Bathing is the child being washed: lively, appealing, a little exposed. Schools that do not reverse the Yin stems would assign a different stage, which is one reason readers rarely judge strength from the stage alone. In practice the branch drains Wood, and Eul-sa usually needs Water or Wood elsewhere in the chart.
Character
Eul-sa tends to be articulate, stylish and quick. Hurting Officer gives a talent for presenting, persuading and improving on what others have done, and an eye for what is out of date. People with this pillar are often noticed for how they speak or dress.
The pillar carries the Golden Carriage (금여 金輿, geumyeo), traditionally associated with grace, good taste and a comfortable domestic life. It fits Eul-sa's polish.
Blind spots: burning through energy, saying the clever thing at the wrong moment, and a restless need for new stimulation that can leave projects half-built. The hidden Officer means Eul-sa often wants recognition from the very institutions it likes to critique, and that tension is worth noticing.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Hurting Officer. Traditionally that suggests a lively, opinionated partnership with lots of conversation and some sparring. Classical texts were cautious about Hurting Officer here in a woman's chart, since it opposes the Direct Officer husband star, yet Eul-sa also hides that same Direct Officer inside the branch, so the picture is mixed. Golden Carriage softens the palace.
Eul-sa also carries the Yin-Yang Mismatch star (음양차착 陰陽差錯, eumyang chachak), which older texts link to friction with in-laws or partners whose families or timing differ. Many contemporary readers give it little weight on its own.
Gyeong-sin (庚申) is the heaven-and-earth combination pillar (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 乙 with 庚, 巳 with 申. Sin-hae (辛亥) is the heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 辛 cuts 乙 and 亥 clashes 巳.
Work and money
Eul-sa suits visible, verbal and creative work: marketing, brand and fashion, media, presenting, teaching, public relations, hospitality, and entrepreneurial ventures built on taste. The hidden Officer also fits roles inside organisations that need a reformer.
Money follows output: Fire produces Earth, and that Earth is Direct Wealth here. Income usually comes from what Eul-sa shows and sells, with a tendency to spend freely on appearance and experience. A budget that leaves room for enjoyment tends to work better than a strict one.
How Eul-sa differs from the other Eul pillars
- Eul-hae (乙亥) is its opposite branch: winter Water as Direct Resource. Eul-hae absorbs; Eul-sa radiates.
- Eul-mi (乙未) also holds Fire, but as a minor Eating God inside dry Earth, steadier and more private.
- Eul-yu (乙酉) faces authority as Seven Killings in the main stem; in Eul-sa authority is a quiet, attractive hidden Direct Officer.
- Eul-myo (乙卯) keeps all its Wood; Eul-sa gives it away.
All six share the Eul Yin Wood Day Master. Eul-sa follows Gap-jin (甲辰) and precedes Byeong-o (丙午). See the Snake page for the branch animal.
Eul-sa in 2026–2030
- 2026 Byeong-o (丙午): Hurting Officer over Eating God. More Fire on a Fire branch: very expressive, and a reminder to protect energy.
- 2027 Jeong-mi (丁未): Eating God over Indirect Wealth. Easier output, with income from side projects.
- 2028 Mu-sin (戊申): Direct Wealth over Direct Officer, and the Monkey forms a branch harmony with the Snake. Partnerships, contracts and structured roles fit.
- 2029 Gi-yu (己酉): Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings. Bigger stakes and sharper demands.
- 2030 Gyeong-sul (庚戌): Direct Officer over Direct Wealth, and Gyeong combines with the Eul Day Master. A year for formal commitment.
The Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are In (Tiger) and Myo (Rabbit), which none of these years carries. Use the day pillar calculator to see the full chart.
FAQ
Is Eul-sa a lucky day pillar?
Eul-sa carries the Golden Carriage star and a hidden Direct Wealth and Direct Officer, which are traditionally favourable. Its main caution is that the Fire branch drains the Wood Day Master.
What is Eul-sa like in love?
With Hurting Officer in the spouse palace, Eul-sa usually wants a lively partner and lots of conversation. Tradition adds the Yin-Yang Mismatch star as a note about family expectations.
What does 乙巳 mean in Saju?
乙巳 is Yin Wood over the Snake, the early-summer Fire branch. It is pillar 42 of the sixty and pictures a flowering plant in strong sun.

The Snake branch carries these stems inside it (지장간). Read from the Eul Day Master, each takes a Ten God role.

|---|---|---|---|
| 戊 Mu | Yang Earth | 7 days | Direct Wealth |
| 庚 Gyeong | Yang Metal | 7 days | Direct Officer |
