Gap-sin (甲申) Day Pillar: Yang Wood Monkey Under Seven Killings
Gap-sin (甲申, 갑신) is Gap, Yang Wood, sitting on Sin, the Monkey branch. It is number 21 of the sixty-pillar cycle. Sin is early autumn and hard Yang Metal: the season when harvest knives come out. The picture is a pine growing straight out of a granite cliff, with a woodcutter's axe lying against its roots. The setting is harsh, so the tree grows tight-grained and tough.
The image
Metal cuts Wood, so here the branch controls the stem. The main hidden stem (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) of Sin is Gyeong, Yang Metal, for 16 days, and from a Gap Day Master it is Seven Killings (칠살 七殺, chilsal), the most direct and least polite form of pressure among the Ten Gods (십신 十神, sipsin). The other two hidden stems are Mu, Yang Earth, for 7 days as Indirect Wealth, and Im, Yang Water, for 7 days as Indirect Resource.
That small Im matters a great deal. Classical texts prize a chain called "Killings producing Resource" (살인상생 殺印相生, sarin-sangsaeng): Metal pressure feeds Water, and Water feeds the Wood Day Master. The axe, in other words, also comes with a spring. Gap-sin carries the beginnings of this chain inside its own branch.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gap at Sin sits in Severance (절 絶, jeol), the point where the old form is cut off and before new life starts. By itself the Day Master is weak here, and most readers want Water or Wood elsewhere in the chart to carry the weight of the Metal.
Character
Gap-sin people often perform best under pressure. Deadlines, emergencies, strict rules and demanding bosses tend to sharpen them where others freeze. They take duty seriously.
Their inner life is usually more tense than it looks. Seven Killings in the branch means a strong internal critic, and Severance gives a sense of starting over more than once. Rebuilding from scratch is a recurring theme, and Gap-sin is often good at it.
Blind spots: treating every situation as a test, overworking to prove worth, and a difficult relationship with authority that alternates between obedience and rebellion. The healthy route, in line with the Killings-producing-Resource idea, is to turn pressure into study, training and credentials rather than simply enduring it.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Seven Killings. Traditionally that suggests a partner with a strong will: decisive, demanding, often impressive, sometimes controlling. In a woman's chart Seven Killings is one of the husband stars, so the theme is especially prominent there. The relationship often brings growth through challenge, and the classical warning is about power struggles and one partner setting all the terms.
Gi-sa (己巳) is the heaven-and-earth combination pillar (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap): 甲 with 己 above, 申 with 巳 below. Gyeong-in (庚寅) is the heaven-strikes-earth-clashes pillar (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung): 庚 cuts 甲 and 寅 clashes 申. These are reference points from tradition, not predictions about any pairing.
Work and money
Gap-sin suits structured, high-stakes environments: law and enforcement, the military, compliance and audit, emergency services, engineering, project rescue, competitive sport,. It also does well in professions with tough entry exams, which fits the Resource inside the branch.
Indirect Wealth appears only as a minor hidden stem, so money tends to be earned through position and responsibility more than through trading. Income can jump when Gap-sin takes on a difficult role others avoid.
How Gap-sin differs from the other Gap pillars
Every Gap Yang Wood pillar has a different relationship to strength, and Gap-sin is the one most shaped by outside force.
- Gap-in (甲寅) is its opposite branch and its mirror: Officialdom and Friend. Gap-in pushes; Gap-sin is pushed and pushes back.
- Gap-ja (甲子) has only Resource in its branch. Gap-sin earns its Resource through pressure.
- Gap-o (甲午) is also low on the life stages (Death), but its drain is self-expression, not control.
- Gap-sul (甲戌) holds Direct Officer as a minor stem, a milder, more procedural kind of authority.
Gap-sin comes after Gye-mi (癸未) and before Eul-yu (乙酉). The branch animal is on the Monkey page.
Gap-sin in 2026–2030
Gap-sin's Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are O (Horse) and Mi (Goat), and the next two years fall exactly on them. 2026, Byeong-o (丙午), brings Eating God over Hurting Officer, and 2027, Jeong-mi (丁未), brings Hurting Officer over Direct Wealth. Fire controls Metal, so these output years ease the pressure on Gap-sin; the Void reading suggests the visible results may lag behind the effort.
2028, Mu-sin (戊申), repeats the day branch: Indirect Wealth over Seven Killings, with the same Monkey branch doubled. Expect a year heavy with responsibility. 2029, Gi-yu (己酉), sets Direct Wealth over Direct Officer and combines with the Gap stem, favouring formal roles and agreements. 2030, Gyeong-sul (庚戌), returns Seven Killings over Indirect Wealth.

FAQ
Is Gap-sin a difficult day pillar?
Gap-sin sits in Severance with Seven Killings below, so it carries more pressure than most Gap pillars. Traditionally it is also seen as resilient, because the hidden Im Water can turn that pressure into support.
What kind of partner suits Gap-sin?
The spouse palace holds Seven Killings, which points to a strong-willed partner. Relationships tend to work when both people share authority rather than one setting all the rules.
What does 甲申 mean in Saju?
甲申 is Yang Wood over the Monkey, a Yang Metal branch. It is pillar 21 of the sixty and pictures a tree growing tough on hard, cutting ground.
