Gyeong-sin (庚申) Day Pillar: Metal on Metal, the Yang Metal Monkey
Gyeong-sin (庚申, 경신) is the day pillar (일주 日柱, ilju) where Gyeong 庚, the Yang Metal Day Master, stands on Sin 申, the Monkey. It is number 57 of the sixty-pillar cycle (육십갑자 六十甲子, yuksip-gapja). Note that Sin 申 the Monkey is a different character from Sin 辛 the Yin Metal stem. Picture a sword resting on an iron anvil inside a mountain mine. Everything in the scene is metal.
The image
The stem and the branch share an element, a pattern Korean readers call 간여지동 (干與支同, ganyeojidong, "stem and branch the same"). Gyeong-sin and its Yin cousin Sin-yu are the two pure Metal pillars of the cycle. The Monkey is Gyeong's own home branch.
The hidden stems (지장간 支藏干, jijanggan) inside Sin 申 are Mu 戊 Yang Earth for 7 days, Im 壬 Yang Water for 7 days and Gyeong 庚 Yang Metal for 16 days. Gyeong (庚) as the main hidden stem makes the branch a Friend (비견 比肩, bigyeon): an equal, a peer, a second self. Mu (戊) is Indirect Resource, a small store of support. Im (壬) is the Eating God, and it gives the heavy metal somewhere to go.
On the twelve life stages (십이운성 十二運星, sibi-unseong), Gyeong on Sin 申 is at Officialdom (건록 建祿, geonrok), the adult who has taken up a post and earns a living. It is one of the two strongest stages, alongside Emperor. Gyeong-sin's Day Master stands firmly on its own feet, and readers usually look for Fire to forge it or Water to let it express itself, rather than for more support.
The Void (공망 空亡, gongmang) branches are the Rat (子) and the Ox (丑).
Character
Gyeong-sin is self-reliant to a degree other pillars find remarkable. People with this pillar tend to decide for themselves, carry their own load and dislike owing anyone. They are loyal, direct and difficult to push once decided.
Where Gyeong-in hunts for opportunity and Gyeong-o seeks approval, Gyeong-sin mainly wants autonomy. Its strengths are endurance, practical skill with tools and systems, and calm in a crisis. The Eating God adds a playful streak and an instinct for craft. The blind spots are rigidity, competitiveness with friends and siblings, and difficulty asking for help.
Relationships
The spouse palace (배우자궁 配偶者宮, baeujagung) holds Friend. Traditional texts read a Friend in the spouse palace in two ways. The positive one is a partner who feels like an equal, a teammate rather than a dependant or a boss. The cautious one, from rules for men's charts, is that Friend competes with Wealth, the wife star, so older books flagged rivalry or distance in marriage. A balanced modern reading: Gyeong-sin does best with a partner who has their own work, opinions and space, and struggles with one who wants constant closeness.
Traditional pairings: the heaven-and-earth combination (천지합 天地合, cheonjihap) is Eul-sa (乙巳), and the "heaven strikes, earth clashes" partner (천극지충 天剋地沖, cheongeuk-jichung) is Byeong-in (丙寅). Both are notes, not forecasts.
Work and money
Gyeong-sin suits work where competence is measured plainly: engineering, mechanics, manufacturing, sport, the armed forces, security, logistics, or running one's own trade. It likes to be judged on output and dislikes office politics. The Eating God points to a craftsperson's satisfaction in making something well.
The money pattern is earned rather than lucky. A Friend branch shares and competes for resources, so joint ventures with friends, co-signing and lending need explicit terms. Many Gyeong-sin people do better with a business they own outright than with partnerships of equals.
How Gyeong-sin differs from the other Gyeong pillars
- Gyeong-in (庚寅) is its clash partner by branch and its opposite in strength: the Tiger leaves Gyeong at Severance, the Monkey puts it at Officialdom.
- Gyeong-ja (庚子) pours its Metal into a Water branch and lives through words; Gyeong-sin keeps its Metal and lives through action.
- Gyeong-jin (庚辰) is supported by Earth and carries Goegang; its force comes through study and command, while Gyeong-sin's comes from simply being the strongest blade in the rack.
- Gyeong-o (庚午) is being forged by Fire in its branch, which makes it responsive to rules. Gyeong-sin has no Officer in its branch and is less interested in rank than in independence.
Gyeong-sin in 2026–2030
Two Fire years open the period, and Fire is exactly what doubled Metal tends to need. The year 2026 (Byeong-o 丙午) gives Seven Killings over Direct Officer: demanding, but often the heat that turns raw strength into a career step. In 2027 (Jeong-mi 丁未), Direct Officer over Direct Resource favours formal recognition and steady progress. The year 2028 (Mu-sin 戊申) brings Indirect Resource over Friend and repeats the Monkey branch, so Metal piles up; watch stubbornness and competition with peers. In 2029 (Gi-yu 己酉), Direct Resource over Rob Wealth adds more Metal company, so shared money and rivalries need attention. The year 2030 (Gyeong-sul 庚戌) brings Friend over Indirect Resource, another self-driven year.
FAQ
Is Gyeong-sin one of the strongest day pillars?
On its own branch, yes: Gyeong sits at Officialdom on a Metal branch with a Friend as the main hidden stem. A strong pillar is not automatically a lucky one, and readers check whether the chart has Fire or Water to use that strength.
What does a Friend in the spouse palace mean?
It is traditionally read as a partner who is a peer or teammate. Older texts also saw competition or distance in it, so the modern advice is to keep both independence and shared goals in view.
