Sin (辛) Yin Metal Day Master: Jewel Personality, Love and Work
Sin (辛) is the Yin Metal Day Master, the eighth Heavenly Stem in Korean Saju. Its images are the jewel, polished silver, the needle and the fine blade: metal that has already been refined and now needs to be cared for and shown well. A day pillar topped by 辛 describes a person with high standards, a sharp eye and a strong sense of their own worth.
Core nature
A gemstone has been cut, polished and set. It does not want to go back into the furnace; it wants clean water to rinse it and good light to show it. Sin people tend to have that same relationship with their surroundings. They notice quality, care how things look and are put together, and are quick to sense when something is off, whether in a contract, an outfit or someone's tone of voice.
Compare this with its sibling Gyeong Yang Metal. Gyeong is raw ore that improves under heat and hammering. Sin is the finished piece, and heavy heat damages it. Gyeong is forceful and blunt; Sin is precise and selective. Gyeong swings an axe; Sin draws a scalpel-thin line between acceptable and not.
Under the polish, Sin is still Metal, with Metal's firmness and sense of right and wrong. Many Sin types are more resilient and more determined than their refined manner suggests.
The Day Master is only one of eight characters, so other elements in the chart can brighten this jewel or bury it in mud. The Day Master guide explains how to weigh them.
Strengths
- Precision. Sin catches errors, weak arguments and sloppy details that others miss.
- Taste. A strong aesthetic sense, often in design, language, food or presentation.
- Self-respect. They know their value and will not easily accept being treated as ordinary.
- Sharp communication. When they choose to speak, Sin can say exactly the right thing in very few words.
Blind spots
- Perfectionism. Polishing forever can delay finishing, and small flaws can loom too large.
- Sensitivity to criticism. Scratches show on a jewel. Sin can take feedback personally and remember it for a long time.
- Cutting remarks. The fine blade can wound, especially when Sin is hurt or tired.
- Image management. Caring how things look may tip into worrying about how they look to others.
Relationships
Sin tends to be selective, loyal once committed and attentive to the details of a relationship, such as anniversaries, gestures and the atmosphere at home. They want to feel valued and admired, and they notice quickly if they are not.
Sin's stem combination partner is Byeong (丙), Yang Fire: the sun shining on a jewel, making it sparkle. Classical sources call 丙辛 the combination of "authority" or dignity, and it is said to transform toward Water. For Sin, Byeong is the Direct Officer, the stem of standards, status and commitment, so the traditional image is of being recognised and shown in the best light by a warm, public partner. This is a stem tendency only; compatibility depends on both whole charts. See the Byeong Yang Fire page.
To Sin, Gyeong reads as Rob Wealth: stronger Metal that can protect the jewel or scratch it.
Work and money
In Ten Gods terms:
- Wealth is Wood. Gap (甲) is Direct Wealth and Eul (乙) is Indirect Wealth. A fine blade carves wood with precision; Sin earns through detailed, skilled, quality-focused work.
- Officer is Fire. Byeong (丙) is Direct Officer and Jeong (丁) is Seven Killings. Sunlight shows a jewel at its best, while a furnace can melt it. Sin usually responds well to recognition and fair standards, poorly to harsh, unrelenting pressure.
- Resource is Earth. Mu (戊) is Direct Resource and Gi (己) is Indirect Resource. Gems form in the earth, but too much earth buries them; support is good in moderation.
- Output is Water. Im (壬) is Hurting Officer and Gye (癸) is Eating God. Water washes a jewel clean, and Sin's output is often refined expression: writing, analysis, critique, design.
Sin often does well in roles where precision and quality are the product: editing, finance and audit, jewellery and fashion, design, law, research, quality control, fine craft. Rough, noisy environments that reward volume over care tend to wear them down.
What supports and drains this Day Master
On the Five Elements cycle, Earth produces Metal and other Metal stands beside Sin. Water draws energy out as expression, Wood takes effort to work, and Fire restrains and melts it.
Strength decides what is helpful. A Sin born in autumn with Metal and Earth all around is a jewel in a pile of rock: Water to wash it and let it shine is the classic remedy, with a little Fire for recognition. A Sin born in midsummer, sitting in heavy Fire, is a ring left in a furnace. Earth and Metal help it keep its form.

- Sin-chuk (辛丑). A gem resting in the Ox's cool, wet Earth, Indirect Resource beneath, in the Nurture stage. Thoughtful and well protected, often quietly unconventional in what it studies or believes.
- Sin-myo (辛卯). A fine blade working the Rabbit's soft Wood, Indirect Wealth as the main hidden stem, at the Severance stage. Sharp with opportunities and good at detailed work, though footing can feel unsettled.
- Sin-sa (辛巳). A jewel over the Snake's Fire, Direct Officer beneath, in the Death stage. Principled and status-conscious, with strong ties to duty; the heat underneath asks for careful pacing.
- Sin-mi (辛未). Metal in dry summer Earth, Indirect Resource as the main hidden stem, in the Decline stage. Mature, reflective and resourceful, often with an interest in less common fields of knowledge.
- Sin-yu (辛酉). Sin on the Rooster's pure Metal in the Officialdom stage. Polished, self-assured and exacting; this pillar knows its standards and keeps to them.
- Sin-hae (辛亥). A jewel washed in the Pig's Water, Hurting Officer beneath, in the Bathing stage. Expressive, witty and attractive, with a talent for words and a restless, independent streak.
